Has anyone else noticed how there’s a white erase-mark-looking space just to the right of the “l” in “offical”? I suppose that person applied some whiteout to that sign. There’s no way a person who promotes some kind of educational STANDARD could possibly spell every word on their sign correctly.

Well it has been the offical language since the beginning. But if you haven’t noticed we do have a lot of hispanic immigrants, so things are going to change. If you didn’t have your head up your ass, you’d probably realize that you’ve been speaking several differant languages for as long as you’ve been able to talk. It’s the reason we’re called a melting pot dumbass.
um….english was never the official language. it’s just the de-facto language. no where in the constitution or bill of rights does it state an official language of this country.

I know it’s a cliche, but why English? There were Spanish speakers in the south well before the English arrived, and there have been ever since. There is no time in the USA’s history when it didn’t have thousands of Spanish-speaking citizens. I’m not even going to talk about native Americans.

Not meaning to get too serious, but, yes, several county hospitals here in Georgia are facing bankruptcy because of services provided to non-residents. Several school systems are going broke because they’ve had to add numerous teachers who are fluent in Spanish…but maybe Georgia is exceptional.

Well, ever since the state started deporting illegals, they’ve kinda high-tailed it out of AZ. The Atlanta area is a second bounce city traditionally, meaning illegals come in through a larger port of entry (LA, NYC, etc), then come to Atlanta to find their family and/or friends.

Well, as an exchange student in Asia, Im not lyin when I say its friggin EMBARRASING when my international friends (who have only been taken English since prolly middle school) correct the grammer of my friends in the midwest!!!! maybe we should look into speaking our official language ourselves… just a thought though….

As much as you’d like to think that American citizens are the only tax-payers, you are sorely wrong. What’s they 8% they add on at restaurants and grocery stores, an added profit for the shop owners? What about the built-in 18-cent gas tax that goes to pay for roads and bridges? What about property taxes (that go directly to fund schools) that are included in rent prices by landlords?
Illegals immigrants put in to tax resources far more than they take out– they’ll never file for social security or pensions like the average American, for fear of outing their legal status.
That’s great that they can’t skip by the law in terms of taxes that no one can avoid. Forgive me for not commending people who do what they cannot avoid.

Please tell me that you do not actually believe the amount of money that immigrants send back to their families has any effect whatsoever on the American economy.
If all the immigrants working and spending money in this country left (forcibly or otherwise), the effect on the economy would be DEVASTATING.
That’s why you wouldn’t deport them all at once. It would take a while, but the effect would not be devastating if done gradually.

I have plenty of Mexican-American friends who got here the legal way, believe it or not, and amazingly they all agree that this whole illegal thing is horribly out of control– for many reasons including the legal residents are getting ragged on as well, from those who are unknowing.
Almost every group that has come to America in the past century or so has been discriminated against, and they all have, for the most part, demolished the racism against them. “Illegal aliens” are as human as Americans, and sooner or later the racism against them will diminish for whatever reason. There is no point in hating mexicans because thirty years from now people will look back at you and shun your racist behavior. If you think Mexicans are ruining our country then you should look at how white americans are, among countless other things, wasting gasoline and energy, senslessly killing animals, and overdeveloping land all over the world. Incidentally, who do people think has more right to American citizenship: “white trash” (yeah I hate that term) living off the state or an illegal immigrant with a job? Not saying either of those are typical, just asking, given those two individuals, who has more right to American citizenship and why.
As an African American, it is a sad relief to see another group being demonized. Only a few years ago, it was us who were accused of having too many illegitimate babies, being on welfare, and generally being a drag on the good ol’ US of A. Now people hate illegal immigrants (and anyone who speaks Spanish, even if they are legal) and it’s anyone from the Middle East, Pakistan, etc. that are getting profiled by the police.
At least, no one thinks African Americans are sneaking into the country illegally (we got here fair and square – on slave ships, and before many of your ancestors) and no one thinks we’re trying to blow up buildings. Of course, unarmed black men are still getting shot to death by police, so maybe things really haven’t improved.

No, s/he’s asking how many of the people opposed to immigration now are the descendants of immigrants themselves. In the 19th century, many people spread xenophobic lies about Italians, Irish and Jews. In fact, there are many striking parallels between how those groups were treated and received and how the Mexicans today are received.
Ok, I’m slow, but I understand now. The parallel gets a little bumpy, though, at the point of legality. My ancestors were discriminated against, certainly, but they came here through Ellis Island and following the law of the land.

By the way…people who preach about making “aliens” learn English need to look at themselves…In my high school class of 300, there were 200 some white Americans… I scored higher than ALL of them on our English proficiency test that the school required for graduation…

First, legal and illegal immigrants would be effected by English as a national language. Second, making English the official language would have no effect on the problems you’re referring to. It would not require hospitals to stop trying to help people who do not speak Englsih and most medical professional would consider it a travesty to do that under any circumstance. It would just make the legal system, voting, etc (government documents) impenetrable to those who speak only other languages or are not entirely proficient in English. Again, matchew, I must remind you that you should read reputable and numerous sources before forming an opinion based on what you think and they telling others how wrong they are.
I’m ok with anyone who comes to this country legally, most of them at least try to learn English. All the non-Spanish speaking immigrants are basically SOL as far as signs in their language, why do the Hispanics get a special pass? Sorry, they lost, we stayed. Anyway, I agree that legals get more than their fair share of descrimination. I was in the army, and I have a friend who’s of middle eastern descent. He was born in the us, is islamic, and speaks english and arabic. After 9/11, you wouldn’t believe the flak he caught because of how he looks. Did I care? No. I still don’t, even after losing my fiance and having my brother permanently crippled from fighting in Iraq.
I do believe we need to do something about the illegals coming in from mexico. I work and pay taxes. Why can’t they? I work as a translator at work; guess what language? There are certainly a lot of people here that are commenting without knowing both sides. My best friend is an illegal immigrant. Brought over when she was two, so she didn’t have a choice in the matter. Not only does she and her whole family pay taxes every year (illegal immigrants can use something called an I-10 number instead of a social security number) but they have all tried to get legal status as some point and time. If she goes back to Mexico and tries to do it the right way, regardless of the fact that she didn’t have a choice in coming over here, she has to wait at least ten years because the government can prove that she has been in the US. She can’t go to college, she can’t get a decent job, she can’t do anything. I understand wanting to punish those who come over illegally with full knowledge of what they are doing, but to punish a two year old? If the government would reform the system, there would be far less illegal immigrants. Right now, not only is it outrageously expensive, but depending on where you are coming from, it also takes an excessive amount of time. My other friend has a green card from Canada, and just to get that to come here she had to wait two years. Another girl I talked to has to wait 13 years to come here legally from Cuba. If the system was changed, and those people that are coming here to escape a place where they are making little to no money didn’t have to pay hundreds to thousands of dollars to get here, and even then wait for years, then people would come the right way. Until that happens, don’t expect things to change anytime soon. Sorry this is so long, but this topic makes my blood boil. Oh, and as a side note, I am from the South, and am not a racist or anti-immigrant, so that little comment made before was very unintelligent. Just sayin

These are my two cents:
1. We applied, we waited, we paid our dues, we underwent “discriminating” medical exam to prove we have no AIDS, mental disability, tuberculosis, or STD. We tried and keep trying to blend in as much as we can, mostly by working legally and respecting this country’s laws. Yes, I am a patriot of this country.
2. Illegal immigration is a big, nasty, lucrative business as vile as drug or weapons smuggling. Ever wondered how much you must pay the coyote to smuggle you in? Are you aware it’s FEW TIMES MORE than legal immigration fees total? How soon are you off the hook? Where does your money go? Do you have any fair chance to break free, stay alive, and go legal? How long you must work for nothing before you are “free” to start your own legalization saga, paying through the nose (again) to the sleazy lawyers? You know they cannot guarantee you legalization, but you have no choice? What about all these so-called Mail-order Brides? (Shame on my old country, it’s the main importer). What about people freezing to death in the cargo compartments on the planes or being eaten by rats on the cargo ships, left for dead in the desert, falling off the boats like Elian Gonzales’s mom? (Thanks for Clinton and Janet Reno, this boy wound up a propaganda prop in the Castro’s bloody hands. His own daughter bolted from the Communist paradise).
3. Can’t speak for other countries, but in the former SU racism and chauvinism is of epic proportions. Neo-Nazis are not that much prosecuted, and they are much more aggressive than in America. The republics/countries have their share of their own illegal immigrants. People get lynched, I mean killed, literally. Well, we’ve gotten our share back then even though we were “natives”: my husband is a Jew, I am not, he was discriminated as a Jew, and I was discriminated because I was married to him. To be precise, I couldn’t get a job I was qualified for because for a government job you get screened, and if you have a potential “defector” (namely Jew) in the family, you automatically fall under suspicion. (Hello Orwell). Well hell, they were right. I finally got fed up and defected – legally.
4. Try and go to ANY OTHER country, starting from Mexico, same way as illegals come to the USA, but on your own. You won’t last a day. You will be arrested, deported, and (probably) abused in any unthinkable way. I mean, what rights? Your are not a citizen. Try to get a job, a place to live, go to the hospital and tell them you got no money. Relax and see what happens. Or you team up with the Mafia that makes big, big bucks on the illegals. They keep you in the barn, they drive you to and from job, and if you get too sick, they get rid of you. If you yap too much, they silence you, physically.
5. Or go to Norway, Belgium, any affluent and civilized country, and ask if they want you there. Good chance is they will fine AND kick you out.
6. People come here mostly from the Third World where they have had no rights, period. Any change is a change for the better. Why do you think they are coming here?.. right, to bite the feeding hand, but not all of them. You just cannot appreciate enough the difference between America and the rest of the world. This country has been too generous and forgiving, and there is too much criminal activity taking advantage of this “weakness”, and when all the hell breaks loose, the two-year-old baby takes the blow. Is it fair? No, but where did you see fair?..
7. Amnesty does not work. Once you give it to a two-year-old baby, the whole village will be banging on the door, bringing their life with them, their language, their criminal structures, their laws (remember Muslim fathers killing their teen daughters for not wearing the veil, in Canada and in the USA within the week?..) Once you express your concerns, you’re discriminating!.. And there are enough lawyer scoundrels lining up to defend people that live here but hate America and don’t give a s*** about its laws. Be careful here. Have you ever seen how they distribute the UN food? The thugs wrestle away women and babies and are selling it five minutes later not even trying to disguise the brand!!! Where – Africa, North Korea, all those commie countries after hurricanes, tsunami, earthquakes – so beware: these people will end up here before any babies. Careful what your wish for.

If it would make you feel better for that to be the case, by all means write your petitions, hold your rallies, and if the time ever comes, vote away to your little hearts content. But all I’m saying is, why are people freaking out about little bitty issues like this that won’t effect anybody? Seriously…any consideration on how AIDS is decimating the people of Africa? No. Any comments about the oppressivve regime in Myanmar that would kill its own monks? Don’t see any. It IS dumb that most of the people who criticize Spanish speakers for not learning English can’t speak English correctly themselves. But what’s even dumber is that we don’t just go ahead and teach all American 3 & 4 year olds Spanish. Then they can interpret for us older folk.
And besides which, Spanish is easier to learn than English. If I go 3 states away from here, I can’t understand what people mean by certainwords – and it is certainly hard to understand Americans from different generations.

Although I agree with you that work camps are a terrible suggestion and Americans in general can be very pompous and closed minded, try going on vacation, much less illegally immigrating, to a western European nation without learning the language. The locals will make your life hell.
No country likes people sneaking in and then asking the locals to support them. It doesn’t matter which country you are from.
I do think it is sad, however, that immigrants who are here legally get the same treatment as those here illegally just because they happen to be of the same nationailty.
While I generally am inclined to stay out of this argument here (it’s more fun to watch!), I want to point out that I’ve been to a few non-English speaking countries where I had no problem getting along. That is, people in Portugal, France, Spain and India all knew English well enough that I never learned their languages very well (I’m working on righting that). My husband lived in Germany and said just about everyone there knew English very well, too. A child with whom I spoke in India knew six languages (English was one). These people put us to shame. The English language is not fixed to American culture; pluralism is.
In other news, the work camp idea is ridiculous and I hope the person who wrote it was just trying to get a rise out of people. The mere mention makes me sad.

on the other hand i see about 10-20 “locals” with signs up asking for change.
