Daily Herald:Crazy Horse monument turns 60 with no end in sight
CRAZY HORSE, S.D. — Sixty years after the first blast signaled work had begun on the world’s largest mountain carving, the project is far from finished.
The carved face of Crazy Horse has been completed and a welcome center and museum are open, but the carving of the Lakota warrior’s body, his horse, and a planned university and medical training center for American Indian students are still years away.

Native American made out of white material

Is it just me? Or is this kind of like the selling cotton on Black History Month
photo? Well, at least its not out of red clay

    • Petey says:

The statue in the foreground is a scale-model of the planned monument. It is only about twelve feet tall. The actual monument is the natural stone of the Black Hills – slightly reddish, banded with yellow and grey.

  4. ema says:

I think this is the statue of Crazy Horse, a Native American of whom there are no photos. It is near the carvings of the 4 presidents in the Black Hills in South Dakota. Am I wrong?

  5. Duke says:

Also, remember to visit the newly built casino :)

  6. ema says:

The face looks exactly like the face of George Washington profile to the upper right… Weird.

    • TheMan says:

Actually that is also Crazy Horse carved into the mountain the guy who was making it died before finishing the white marble statue is the model of what the larger one was going to look like.

      • No one special says:

Actually is gonig to look like they are still making it, wont be done for years though, probably not in our lifetime.

        • herb says:

Not for at least 60 years.

The Crazy Horse Monument refuses government grants and relies solely on donations. (For some reason, the Lakota are a bit lukewarm to the idea of a gift from the Government…)

Oh, and for scale people: The four heads of Mt. Rushmore would fit inside Crazy Horse’s head.

I’ve stood right in that spot…it’s actually the other way!! XD

  10. ema says:

Still think the profile looks like George Washington… does no one else see that?

  11. Nerdychaz says:

Dude, I have been there a lot. My aunt lives about ten miles away. And the gift shop IS THAT WAY!!

    ROTFLMAOOMFGBBQ

  12. NeaNea says:

Oddly enough the gift shop really is that a way…….lol

  13. Jenn says:

It has nothing to do with the Lakota not accepting gov’t money for this project, as it was started by a Swedish ?) immigrant and is still run by his family. The Native Americans are only marginally involved with the creation of this monument in the SD Black Hills. There is also some controvery, partially because no one is sure that Crazy Horse would have approved of having his likeness in granite.

And there IS a gift shop in that direction.

    • Sarah says:

Not to mention the -tiny- little detail of the Black Hills being sacred to the Lakota…

    • herb says:

I referenced the Lakota although, yes, it is the project of the Korczak(?) family; but it is true that they do not accept gov’t grants on the principle of how most gov’t “gifts” to the Lakota were, shall we say, Indian-given.

And I think they’d sacrifice one mountain in the spiritual epicenter of their universe to a proud leader cowardly taken down, versus the other mountain blown up to have 4 white men carved into it.

  14. Rachel of Cyberia says:

They paved over my family’s land to make that parking lot

  15. Ardak says:

Technically, he’s pointing at the Laughing Water Restaurant…

And Rachel is full of poo…just sayin’

  16. STEVE says:
