At this point… I think they are just throwing darts at a board with random numbers above 3 on it. Next week, 7.50! WHOOHOO!!

2. Alaena says:

I think it’s their golf scores. They just aren’t getting any better at their game, n’est pas?

3. Ribbo says:

You can see Bush looking past him towards the buffet. :)

4. Brit lol says:

Its funny how you americans complain about fuel prices.
when in the uk is 1.14 sterling (1 U.S. dollar = 0.514747516 British pounds – google) per liter (0.219969157 Imperial gallons – google)

• Seward says:

Yeah, but the bulk of your cost is tax. Ours is nearly all petrol. Your petrol taxes go back to the community. Our money just goes back to one oil company or another.

My spouse is English. I’ve seen it from both sides. Frankly, I prefer the British system.

• Des says:

And the owners of the oil companies are all those with a pension or a 401(k) fund. The $4.00 you’re paying for here in the States is helping to fund my parents’ retirement without having to be tied to the government teat. Thank you for driving and I’ll take the States systems!

• Herr Kub says:

Thank you. What many liberals don’t realize is that oil companies make a lot less when compared to other mega-corporations. Why don’t we beat up on the pharmaceutical industry which is putting God knows what into our citizens and their children all for a profit. At least, we know what we are getting when we give our money to oil companies.

And for many Americans in the Middle Class, the record profits of oil companies fuels their safety net. Something that will be needed with poor economic planning of this administration finally enters a true recession and not the hyped up one the media is reporting about.

• Mouz says:

… Needed for whom? WHAT middle class?

• fillerbunny says:

How are record oil profits helping the middle class????? And, yeah- we got our eye on the pharmaceutical industry, too… As soon as we can get more politicians who aren’t sucked in by their lavish lobbying firms… (that goes for both industries)

• ema says:

The mutual funds they invest in for their 401k retirement plans invest a lot of money in oil. I heard speculation in the futures market for oil is driving up the price of oil, but I don’t know how it really works…

• fillerbunny says:

Ah, yes… Speculation… Proud child of Enron and Phil Gramm, McCain’s top economic advisor….

• Evil Pundit says:

At least he isn’t in jail, like Obama’s top real estate advisor Tony Rezko.

• durr says:

yeah. completely comparable.

• Evil Pundit says:

Not really. It’s much, much worse.

Rezko actually funneled money to Obama, in the form of land “sold” at way below market value.

Chicago machine corruption.

• fillerbunny says:

One speculatively questionable real estate deal is worse than Millions of Americans getting screwed with their pants on????? You real have no contact with any part of reality that isn’t generated by Faux News, do you?

• Chewybunny says:

how are they getting screwed?

• fillerbunny says:

so, you haven’t seen gas prices and every other consumer good those prices are affecting?

• Evil Pundit says:

That would be the fault of the Democratic congress, for stopping ouil drilling in America’s own new reserves.

• fillerbunny says:

ummm… you might want to look at your facts again… especially the parts where oil companies HAVE reserves in America and off Americancosts they can but currently AREN’T drilling/exploring, and the fact any NEW ares they might acquire now wouldn’t see any output for almost a decade… Even your geriatric clown show admitted that, saying his calls for increased drilling were more for psychological than real market effect…

• fillerbunny says:

yeah- need to slow down while typing… “Americancosts” should be “American coasts”…

• Yar says:

(I tried posting this once already, but it doesn’t seem to have worked.
Forgive me if it ends up here twice)

Oil companies don’t make as much?

A choice comment from this article: “The company reported Friday that it beat its own record for the highest profits ever recorded by any company, with net income rising 3 percent, to $40.6 billion, thanks to surging oil prices.

Poor, poor oil companies.

• Evil Pundit says:

A choice part of Herr Kub’s comment that you missed:

“And for many Americans in the Middle Class, the record profits of oil companies fuels their safety net.”

• Yar says:

Yes, a safety net made of their own money. I fail to see how that’s helpful.

A safety net which they might not need were gas no $4 a gallon, or that they could make for themselves without the need to pay for gas.
And what about the poor? Where’s their safety net? Surely their salvation will be found in artificially inflated oil prices!

After all, who needs food, right? We have gas!

By the way, it’s not “record oil company profits” alone. It’s record profits for a company.

And in what way do their profits help to provide anything for anyone but themselves? You are aware that “profits”, as opposed to “gross income”, is the money the company keeps, correct? I’m sure you are, I’m just saying.

• Evil Pundit says:

“Profits” are the money that the company divides between reinvestment and payment to its shareholders. Shareholders are of course those pension funds which pay for your retirement.

Penalising a company for making profits is just taking money out of your own retirement fund. Not the smartest move in the book.

• Brit lol says:

More like it goes to all the chavs that are unwilling to work. lol

• Jan says:

I am a history researcher and have investigated this issue at length. Depending on which state you live in 14 -18 cents out over dollar of gas goes to you state government. Another very large chunk of that dollar of gas goes to you federal government. The actual figures for the years 1977 – 2004, according to the Tax Foundation state that big oil made $643 billion in profits. Out of that comes the salary and equipment to test where to drill; once it is found, to put up the rigs; then to extract it; put it in the pipeline (which they also had to pay to build); deliver it to the refinery and then have it shipped to the gas pump. During that same period, your federal and state taxes amounted to $1.343 TRILLION dollars. The profit margin is less than 10% to the oil company: a profit that would put most business out on the street. The primary cause of the hike in prices is supply and demand. One little known fact is that China, because they are terrified of running out for the Olympics, has purchased at least 25% more than they normally do to keep in reserve for emergencies. You might take notice of when the prices started to rise dramatically and you’ll see the correlation. They have what they think they need so there will be no embarrassment – that is other than the fact that the world’s athletes might have to wear masks to filter the air – when the Olympics start shortly. We need to break ourselves from foreign oil dependence but we also need to realize that millions of people would be put out of work if we just decide to cut if off. There is no solar alternative for airplanes and car manufacturers can’t retool their factories in a day. We will need oil for millions of products for quite some time. We need to drill now in the US and at the same time develop alternative sources of energy other than corn. Our food supply can’t take the rise in prices because of corn going to ethanol. Unless, of course, we decide that a certain percentage of our population should just starve.

• Evil Pundit says:

You British have too many decimal places.

• Brit lol says:

oh its gone up a penny since last week

5. Kroenen says:

seriosly though, how do they come up with $4 a gallon? Last time I had to fuel up the truck, it cost $100 even. amusing and scary at the same time.

6. Jane says:

Funny AND sad, man this sucks.

7. Donald says:

Hooray for bicycles!

8. SaNdCrAwLeR says:

time to start thinking about buying a japanese/european truck? :P

9. Ryan says:

They just charge as much as they can. If they charge too much people buy less and they have extra. They lower their price and people buy up the extra bit until there is a shortage, and then they charge more. I would be willing to bet that the actual decisions about where to ship gasoline and what to charge are made by sophisticated computer programs designed for the task.

10. Dave says:

It looks like Bush is just itchin for the guy to quit talking so he can make some kind of world domination joke.

“heh heh – so, wheres the red button – heh heh”

11. Devi says:

I don’t see why people have to give the gas prices so much attention. EVERYONE KNOWS THEY’RE GOING UP. Stop flipping out about it! It’s inevitable!

12. Chibatsu says:

So while us lower and middle class working people bust our asses to make life easier for you upper class people, we’re supposed to be expected to haul our ladders and tools to work on a bike so we can support our families because gas is getting too expensive to afford to drive? Hmmm… that’s quite the interesting concept.

I’m still trying to get a grasp on all of this, to be quite honest, but what I just explained is what I see having to go on every day with the people not only in my own family, but throughout the entirety of my town. My father has to ride a bike to work with his tools on his handlebars and in a backpack on his back and my husband has to work from home because (even with decent pay) he can’t afford to commute back and forth to work because gas prices are getting to be ridiculously high.

I see everyone’s argument here and I’m not saying one person or another is right or wrong, but some of you are just not thinking before you start posting nonsense. There are other people out there that AREN’T upper and middle class that still are doing their best and are trying to change this country for the better. Most of the time it’s not their fault that they’re poor. They’re working hard, not lazing about. What about THOSE people?

And of course Democrats are against that drilling. It’s in a reserve. That land is limited enough as is and you now want to start poking HOLES in it like swiss cheese?

13. trusts says:

ah, so that’s why it makes no sense to the everyday american.
