And this is one of those times where it is perfectly acceptable to soil yourself.

  2. Steve says:

Is that the sound of a tornado or my butthole clamping shut?

  3. Lady C says:

Pic taken near Orchard, Iowa on June 11 2008.

Snopes has the scoop, as usual.

    What an amazing picture! Wow!

  7. Wade says:

Not positive, but I am pretty sure that was one of the massive tornadoes we had in Iowa a week or two ago. Well, I believe it was shown on another site and that it was actually a wall cloud, though it looks like a tornado. Don’t take my word, though. Just what I recall. I am, however almost sure it was in Iowa. Possibly the storm that ended up hitting a Boy Scout Camp and killing 3 or 4 teens, injuring many more. It was pretty awful.

A week or so before that we had an F5 that hit a small town and pretty much flattened 60% of it. Been a good spring, so far.

  8. Gina says:

this is the twister that was in Iowa and killed those boy scouts

  9. Marlene says:

This was posted on a blog for the NY TImes on June 13 – this is was the post said:

“When the weather turned violent and stormy on Tuesday evening, Lori Mehmen, who lives in the small farming town of Orchard in northeastern Iowa, looked out her front door and saw a funnel cloud bearing down — and evidently had the presence of mind to grab her digital camera and capture this shot before taking cover. The local paper, The Mitchell County Press-News, posted the photo on Wednesday and The Associated Press picked it up today.

Ms. Mehmen told the paper that her funnel cloud came close to the ground only briefly, then retreated back up into the clouds. Still, the high winds from the storm knocked down trees, damaged crops, and left behind one indelible image.”

  10. Amy Lynn says:

This picture is from Western Iowa. It was taken a couple of weeks ago during the tornado outbreak that destroyed the Little Sioux Boy Scott Ranch.

  11. Traci says:

My uncle sent it to me last week or so. It is from the tornado in Iowa that hit the Boy Scout camp.

  12. Traci says:

It was the tornado in Iowa that hit the Boy Scout camp. My uncle sent me the picture. It’s not too far from where my mom grew up. She said she used to attend 4-H events there.

  13. Traci says:

It is the Iowa tornado that hit the Boy Scout camp. My uncle sent me this picture a week or so ago. My mom grew up near there and said she used to attend 4-H events at that camp.

  14. Traci says:

This was from the tornado that hit the Boy Scout camp in Iowa.

  15. Ashley says:

This was taken in Iowa by the boy scout camp where 4 of the scouts got killed.

Was in Orchard, Iowa, but is not the one that killed the Boy Scouts.

  17. LittleAce says:

Here’s where it came from – read the origins.

It was one of the Iowa tornadoes, but not the one that killed the Boy Scouts as the emails going around say it is.

  19. Khaaaaaaan says:

  20. Darrel says:

Wherever this picture was taken is somewhere else now……

  21. Stoneangel says:

Ok I think we are are all in agreement then? Iowa sheesh

  22. this photo was taken by Lori Mehen , of Orchard, Iowa , out of the door of her house, with her digital camera,on june 13th , 2008.

  23. yasoup says:

Glad I live in TX, even if it ISN’T A TRUE TORNADO!

  24. dropofkim says:

It almost looks like a wide open mouth with a long tongue reaching down to taste the ground…damn scary.

    • Wade says:

Hahaha….you know what, it does look like that, now that you mention it. I am pretty sure it took a good long taste.

    • Steve says:

Actually, it kinda looks like Obama’s mouth. I am not sure if it looks like his tongue. I have never seen that.

just kidding everyone. Just trying to make a political joke from a non-political picture. No need to flame me. Though I am sure you will.

    • lowly grunt says:

It DOES look like a mouth. Huh.

  25. Ozzie Mandius says:

My Global Warming – let me show you it.

  26. Dave says:

I like how people don’t bother reading previous comments and keep posting “BOY SCOUT CAMP IN IOWAZ!1″ even though it’s been proven otherwise multiple times beforehand. :<

  27. Rawr says:

I can has a boy scout?! Lol.

  28. i agree says:

    auntie em! auntie em!

  29. rawr2 says:

Not in Iowa, nothing to do with boy scouts and not even really a tornado, it is a mesocyclone. Jeez people are gullible…

  30. The Rev. says:

OM NOM NOM SMALL TOWN OM NOM NOM!

  31. Ama says:

God ppl, read the comments above you, it’s Iowa or whatever! Reposting the obvious=fail.

And who the hell cares where it is, what exact type of stome cloud it is etc…it’s just a freakin awesome photo that is definitely a moment in which it would be completely legitimate to soil oneself.

  32. Brian T says:

I live 5 miles away from this place. I assure you, it’s NOT the one that hit the boy scout camp. As posted earlier, it touched down very very briefly and went back up right away.

Cool to see the picture making the national rounds though. The “town” of Orchard is literally maybe a few hundred people in population. The town that got its ass kicked a few weeks ago was Parkersburg, IA.

  33. hueydoc says:

And thats why we call it “The Finger of God”!!!

  34. beingwyrd says:

does it look like a face reaching down and licking the ground to anyone else?

  35. fae_tal says:

so, now we know the real reason the cost of wheat has jumped… (haha?)
this is amazing, my family is predominately out of Oklahoma and it still amazes me that people don’t have the presence of mind to just live underground. bury the electrical lines, bury the house. then when Mother Nature decides to smote the entire bread basket she can make off with some trees rather than human lives and property.

    • becinSD says:

What happens when we have a flood then? OUr houses get ruined either way. It floods more often then we get hit by tornados. The house i live in is 108 years old and has only been hit by a tornado once and survived…i can live with those odds.

  36. Anonymous says:

This picture has also been hanging out as one of the top pictures on Yahoo! News’ photos page http://news.yahoo.com/photos . Right this moment it’s 3rd most emailed.

  37. ciara says:

If the Hoover vacume cleaner from hell showed up in my backyard, I do not think I could take a picture of it. I’d be tunneling to another country.

    Awesome picture of squicky weather

  38. Chibatsu says:

  42. Zeph says:

If that’s a real tornado, where’s the debris cloud around it? Seems faked to me

  43. Samantha says:

Honestly…this was taken in Orchard, Iowa. I live three miles away from here. The tornado came down and went back up without hurting anything..not sure why. It was in our local paper and a lady with the last name Mehmen took it. This is not the boy scout one, that was a different weekend.

  44. Steve S says:

We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto. Now we’re in Missouri …….now Iowa …. now South Dakota ….. Nebraska …..

  45. Shannon says:

Now, I may not be American, so I’m not accostume to Twisters…but it is my general understanding that you don’t get close enough to take a photo like that. What idiot stands near a twist to take a photo. “Oh, this will make a lovely addition to me scape-AAHHHHRRRGGGHHHHhhhhhh……..”. What’s more, I find it stupid you are agruing over who’s damn twister it is. It’s a TWISTER ffs, doesn’t matter where it is, it means very very very bad things.

    • steve says:

Well, it really depends. If it is an American Shorthair Twister, then it is okay to get close and cuddly. It is the African Twisters you really have to watch out for. We call them “Big Twisters” here in the states. So, if you may not be an American, what may you be?

  46. dave says:

western Iowa, killed some kids at a boy scout camp.

  47. nikki says:

    Wow..one hell of a supercell.

  48. Craig Bush says:
