Please. ‘Yank’ and ‘Yankee’ are obviously different terms, at this point.

Y’know… I bet when the song came out, there were plenty of Southerners singing along with it as well. (Does make one wonder about one of the biggest ironies played on a country’s people. Yay, let’s sing a song which makes fun of us!)

It’s an old enough term, whose bite has softened over time, and is quite tongue-in-cheek by now, wouldn’t you think?

(And if you consider Texas as part of the South, which some do or do not, I have lived in the South for my full life. And if not, I’ve been in Georgia since 2002. It’s really not a big deal to most of us here. o.O)

And how exactly do YOU know what the soldier in this pic thinks is funny or not. I come from a military family. My dad was a Lt. Colonel. I grew up on military posts. Both of my brothers served, in fact one is in Iraq right now. My grandparents were both in WWII which is where they met and got married after the war, to say nothing of the many uncles and great grandparents and so forth that also served. I can tell you that soldiers tend to have a great sense of humor, often self-mocking, and it is one of the ways they deal with intense, often dangerous situations. I know many soldiers that would find this picture hilarious and in no way disrespectful.

The cats at least have circumstances in their pictures that can be used to make the humor. This “humor” in this picture had to be invented at to far a stretch.

“Yanks” is British slang for anyone from the USA, whether they’re from the North or the South.

It’s like the Yanks who use “Limey” as a slang term for anyone British, whether they’ve been in the Navy or not.

Let’s just put it this way-

That is a paramilitary unit for one- not an American soldier or Marine.

Two, nowhere in Iraq looks like that. I’ll bet it’s from Panama or Columbia.

and Three, as Mike pointed out, only those who have been can say one way or the other. And even then, only but a few of those.

I know this is a political satire site, but ignorance always irks me, even in jest.
