When it’s opened, it ejects the shells automatically to make room for the 2 new ones you’ll presumably be inserting next.

And when you’ve used one enough to make it into the Olympics, snatching the spent shells out of midair is probably a piece of cake. Damn nice photo to catch it with the smoking shells and all, tho.
