I completely second this sentiment. Normally I’m loathe to give the Russians anything, but they can have the “FIRST!!!” folks. And I will happily watch.
The Georgians started the war by invading Ossetia first. Then Russia retaliated. Why we take the georgians side on this I really don’t understand. We really shouldn’t take either side, except the side of peace.
I’ve been following the story on various blogs since the invasion. The link under my name shows some of the Russian preparations.
The smoking gun though, is the fact that the Russians had troops invading Georgia in less than 24 hours. It takes weeks to prepare an invasion, and they were ready to go.
That, and the fact that the Russians agreed to a ceasefire and then immediately broke it, shows them to be the aggressors.
And by “Ready to invade” you mean they had forces ready to go near the border? The border of a country that was willing to make the first move by invading S. Ossettia? Sounds to me like they were expecting that Georgia would try something stupid, so they preempted it by having troops ready to go at a moments notice? Sounds to me like it might be good that they were standing by with their asskicking boots strapped on and ready to go. Like you said, it takes weeks to prepare an invasion. And do you think it would be possible to spend said weeks preparing said invasion without your next door neighbors noticing “Hey, that’s an awful lot of tanks parked along the border dontcha think?” and so seeing come to the conclusion “Hey, maybe we should put a bunch of tanks on OUR side of the border, just in case.”
I do find it amusing though that EP automatically paints the aggressor as being the ‘bad guy’ unless of course that aggressor is the USA.
And yeah, they broke the cease fire. That was wrong of them. So, anybody who is from a country who has never done something unscrupulous, feel free to criticise that action.
Never heard of USSR occupation of Poland in 1939, where they partitioned the country with Nazis, their buddies at the time? Nazi-Soviet joint paradein town of Brest -Litowsk?
Invasion of Finland 1939?
Bessarabia (Romania) in 1939?
Lithuania in 1940?
Latvia in 1940?
Estonia in 1940?
Etc….
After all the 50 years of totalitarian domination of over half of the Europe and fighting democracy all around the world?
Nope! The Georgians split away (think Revolutionary War) from Russia. Russia wants them back, but we’re supporting Georgia because, number one, their wine is amazing, and number two, because we hate the Russians. I agree that we should have peace, but the best way to do that is side with Georgia.
well since you are stating your nationality, you are french, I will now take your opinion as absolute fact. I need no other reassurances that Russia is indeed in the right on all counts. I do this solely because I am just another ignorant American who couldn’t possibly think that your opinion could be skewed or biased one tiny little bit because, of course, you are french. Thanks for opening my binded eyes to the truth!
People who refer to french fries as freedom fries because they don’t like france are ignoramouses. To french is a culinary term. French fries are from belgium not france. Calling them freedom fries is like calling mashed potates depression potatoes. or vegetable stir-fry vegetable repression-fry.
“help! help! I’m being repressed!”
Not really, most Americans know what it means and it doesn’t matter where they really come from. Anyway, it’s not used much anymore but was kind of fun for awhile.
Sure, the Russians are the good guys, if you believe their public statements. “No, we would never invade Georgia proper, we’re just safeguarding S. Ossetia.” A few hours later, independent reports of Russian armor in the Georgian countryside appear.
“No, we would never occupy Goki…” and what do you know, fighting in Goki. And there’s a main road that goes between Goki and Tblisi, the capital.
But don’t worry, the Russians assure us that they would -never- invade the capital…
All insults aside, how exactly does being French give you an insider’s viewpoint, so to speak. You are not over there fighting, you don’t have access to the information either government is using to make their decisions. You have to get your facts the same way the rest of us do, your geographical location means nothing.
Well said. Given that this is a WAR, I don’t think anyone qualifies as a good guy. Would have thought that as adults we’d know the world isn’t in black and white anymore, but I suppose that’s too optimistic of me.
But really people, can we please stop bring up world war II everytime a French person disagrees with us? It just makes you look like a douche bag. We saved them in WWII, they yanked our butts out of the fire in the Revolutionary war.
Thank you for defending the French. They get picked on way too much by idiot Americans for not supporting the war in Iraq. And also you use the same defense that I tend to stand by. Also, it was only the French Government that surrendered in WWII, not the French people. THEY KEPT FIGHTING!
The only war the french have won in the last 300 years was the French Revolution- Because they were fighting the French! They are doing okay in the Olympics- except for swimming. (snicker) In track and field, their coach simply flashes them a life sized picture of a German soldier coming at them- and it’s amazing how fast they run!
Thank you , I’ll be here all week! Try the veal and tip your waiters!
Oh gee EP your well worded rebuttal has left me completely dumbfounded and speechless. I can not hope to argue against such masterful use of the english language.
And just like the french government surrendered
Its only the American Government that is picking on France
Im getting pissed off at the people who see all Americans, as morons who want this war in Iraq.
NO, don’t be fooled, there’s always a fake explanation to all wars, attacks etc, each time a country is taking over another country its officialy libarating it from some sort of evil or just taking neccasary measures to defend itself, but that is just BS.
Even if there is something wrong going on in Georgia, Russia is just taking advantage of it to achieve what IT wants, not simply helping out.
Basicly Russia doesn’t want Georgia to join NATO, if Russia promotes Georgia as an instable country then NATO will never allow Georgia in.
Another reason might be that Russia is actually wants to take over the Osetia region or whole Georgia. For me, allowing them to do that, with the whole world looking at it, would be the same as saying “you’re big and dangerous Russia, do whatever you want, were too scared to do anything about it”:/
we already sat back doing nothing when China was taking over Tibet…
My guess is they’re marching toward the pipeline. It has the added benefit of taking Georgian troops from Iraq to fight on the home front. I personally don’t offer my opinion on the matter, this is just an observation of cause and affect. Georgia has the third most troops in Iraq (next to America and GB). The fewer troops on a war front, the longer it takes to achieve military goals (if those goals are to be achieved at all, again, no opinion offered). America is currently so spread to the world that, unless it can somehow significantly increase man power, it has no capacity for any more military missions. If America’s goings in Iraq were slow before, they’re glacial now. American armed forces have tried to put 50lbs of sh!t in a 10lb bag, and now the bag is breaking.
Heh, yeah. He’s also a pathological liar, an adherent to the failed policies of the Bush administration, has a terrible temper, and will probably croak before his first term is up. But let’s talk about Putin, since that’s who is in the lol.
Nah, he just fantasizes that if he acts like a big enough jackass on the internet that it will make up for the years of working in journalism, academia, and politics that real pundits have to do to pay their dues. Next stop: Fox News!
I often wonder about the motives of so-called “internet guardian angels.” What truly drives them to want to be more informed over anyone; supreme in their sources of information; of the opinion that everyone who disagrees with you must be defective somehow? It always reeks of megalomania.
Depending on who will be his VP, I’m counting on it. That’s the only reason I would vote at all this year; in the hopes that McCain goes six feet under and leaves us with someone legitimate.
Oh for the love of God! I pride myself on not saying this to anyone on PK because I think everyone has the right to their opinions and blah blah blah but will you just STFU already!!!
oh that makes me sick to hear all that! i am russian and know alllot more about the whole thing!! you guys are so ignorant of international relations and foreign affairs because your mass media turned everything upside down! and you dare to argue about the things you know nothing about! believe me this all is not what it seems or not what your government makes you think it is! they say to you russia is a huge monster but did you know georgians launched the war on the day when olympics began, they broke all the possible international agreements, killed thousands of innocent civilians: men, women, kids (a lot of russian citizens among them), they won’t let the wounnded go to hospital..when they started to kill russian peacemakers..well we had to defend. not invade. next time, please. if you’re not competent in anything, be careful in your judgments, arguments and statements
You seem very sure that it is indeed American media lying to the people, and not the Russian media lying to the people. The legitimacy of either source is very much up for question. What have you personally seen that validates your statements? You may be correct, but you need to give me a better reason to buy your point. I’m honestly interested in anything you have to say that your media hasn’t told you.
Now, in December 2008, even Russians themselves have admitted that there were no ” thousands of killed civilians”, just over a hundred, besides many of those killed by Russians themselves.
Blah blah about town of Chinvali being “leveled” and turned into heap of rubish has turned out about to be BS – if I remember it correctly, around 10% of houses are damaged, ’cause separatists had their positions in there.
Ridiculous when you talk about Russian “peace keepers”. Those guys for years have behaved like occupation forces in Georgia, arming, guarding and coordinating activities of separatists, who have continuously firing at Georgians, even using artillery.
Funny, that even Russian own media had reported, that Russian 58th army entered South Osetia even before the start of the conflict. Just like the Georgians claim. They say – they took it for invasion and acted in self-defence. This looks to be true.
What about Russians using cluster bombs to kill civilians? They killed a reporter, Reuters I guess, live on TV. Were targeting town’s market square. Intentionally. Isn’t it a war crime?
Russian horror stories about Georgian soldiers murdering Osetinian civilians en masse have turned out to be hot air, intentionally spread unsubstantiated rumors, blown out by the Russian media.
Instead satellite imagery shows Georgian villages being torched by Russian backed separatist gangs to carry out the ethnic cleansing.
Youtube is full of videos with Russian and separatist marauders robbing shops and houses. The “golden fork” case has become known worldwide.
Russian media claiming, that American, Ukrainian and Latvian citizens were fighting as mercenaries on Georgian side. So far the only proof has been a single USA passport. As it turned out – of a teacher who lost it in Moscow airport.
Etc, etc…
So who’s “mass media turned everything upside down”? Eh?
You are threat to everyone. Including yourselves (but that would be the last thing I cared about)…
Oh, please. Putin is behind everything. The Georgians tried to get their land to be free in the ’90s. They succeeded. It’s still a mess-in 10 years, it will be beautiful, though. The Russians are trying to get it back-Putin is fighting for it. The Russians invaded, we (the Georgians) are defending.
thnx. but still it hurts me so much that other people are incorrectly informed and traduce my country and my president. does he really seem more ridiculous for you then yours?? can’t believe it haha

i’ve lived in the states for a while and talked to many people about politics, watched news and so on, and seen how you guys think that russia is somewhere in siberia, someone was trying to show me how computer works like hey have you ever heard there in russia about computers? or is it too cold there that you can’t use all those devices?
What have you personally seen that validates your statements? – i’ll tell you that at least i’ve seen more then you because it’s my country. and well, who knows, maybe i’m a special fbi agent lol
First.
Not 1st!!!!!11one!!!
No, sorry Vladimir…but we’ll be happy to give you the “FIRST!!!” brigade, as shown above. Do with them what you wish. Please.
I completely second this sentiment. Normally I’m loathe to give the Russians anything, but they can have the “FIRST!!!” folks. And I will happily watch.
Vlad, you can has ANYTHING you want, big boy. *drool*
Oh crap. Cold shower.
The French seem to share that sentiment Connie.
nahh, just the french men *shudders*
yes.. I am English
I smell a huge pile of FAIL.
Do you?
it’s funny to see the american’s pov about this war, i am french, and it seems that the russians are not the bad guys this time, sorry m8s
The Russians just broke the ceasefire they made through Sarkozy. It seems they are still the bad guys this time.
The Georgians started the war by invading Ossetia first. Then Russia retaliated. Why we take the georgians side on this I really don’t understand. We really shouldn’t take either side, except the side of peace.
You should check the chronology. The Russians were ready to invade, and Georgia was responding to provocation.
The Russians are unequivocally the aggressors in this.
And what is your source for this information?
I’ve been following the story on various blogs since the invasion. The link under my name shows some of the Russian preparations.

The neo-cons. They never rest. There’s always some new place to troll.
So do some research of your own if you don’t like mine.
Or just keep on believing ex-KGB man Putin’s propaganda if it’s too hard to tthink for yourself.

Russians are bastards. They have always been.
They where the aggressor in the WWII not the hero. They attacked Poland,, attacked the northern countries, annected parts of many countries etc.
Ever in the history they have been the bastards and that has not changed in the last couple of years.
It’s their national tradition to be bastards and most their people are even proud of it.
The Europe should unite to oppose the Russia, because they are a threat all
How stupid are you?
What a f*ck?

Check this out. Just to refresh your knowledge of history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet%E2%80%93German_relations_before_1941 .
South Ossetia IS part of Georgia. It was set up by the Soviet Union and remained as part of historical Georgia after the fall of the SU.
Nope! The Georgians split away (think Revolutionary War) from Russia. Russia wants them back, but we’re supporting Georgia because, number one, their wine is amazing, and number two, because we hate the Russians. I agree that we should have peace, but the best way to do that is side with Georgia.

I did the calculations and the french european combination-percentage-of-correctness-number broke my calculator….I’m afraid to use my computer.

well… he could only be right if the conversation was about cheese tho…

Um, it was only 2003… what “scandals”?
You must be kidding.
What “scandals”?
Since when do the French know anything about wars ? Except how to LOSE!
You’re silly!
I love France. They are the best losers in the world. Did you see them on medal stand after the US stole their gold medals? They looked so happy.
I would buy a French gun, though. They have never been shot, and dropped only once.

Ahhha I get it, Stalin and Putin rofl rofl.
Erm…Putin and Bush.
No, no, he meant what he said and he said what he meant. Ron Pork called him “Putlin” -notice the L- which would be a combo of Stalin and Putin.

How about a passion for and committment to the truth?
More like a passion for and commitment to forbidden man-love. He is a conservative after all…
So, you don’t actually have a reply? I see…well, I would stick with hurling insults then… Have fun.
A reply to what? EP’s baseless insinuations that Obama is a bigger liar than the Republicans, backed up by his own super-speshul webpage?
Yeah, let me get right on that…
Have you read the link? You should.
The supposed commitment for the truth is wearing a very sanctimonious and narcissistic mask.
In your opinion.
Mine too.
I didn’t say that! Is there another Jane on here, damn it!
