The Russians just broke the ceasefire they made through Sarkozy. It seems they are still the bad guys this time.
The Georgians started the war by invading Ossetia first. Then Russia retaliated. Why we take the georgians side on this I really don’t understand. We really shouldn’t take either side, except the side of peace.
You should check the chronology. The Russians were ready to invade, and Georgia was responding to provocation.
The Russians are unequivocally the aggressors in this.
And what is your source for this information?
I’ve been following the story on various blogs since the invasion. The link under my name shows some of the Russian preparations.
The smoking gun though, is the fact that the Russians had troops invading Georgia in less than 24 hours. It takes weeks to prepare an invasion, and they were ready to go.
That, and the fact that the Russians agreed to a ceasefire and then immediately broke it, shows them to be the aggressors.

And by “Ready to invade” you mean they had forces ready to go near the border? The border of a country that was willing to make the first move by invading S. Ossettia? Sounds to me like they were expecting that Georgia would try something stupid, so they preempted it by having troops ready to go at a moments notice? Sounds to me like it might be good that they were standing by with their asskicking boots strapped on and ready to go. Like you said, it takes weeks to prepare an invasion. And do you think it would be possible to spend said weeks preparing said invasion without your next door neighbors noticing “Hey, that’s an awful lot of tanks parked along the border dontcha think?” and so seeing come to the conclusion “Hey, maybe we should put a bunch of tanks on OUR side of the border, just in case.”
I do find it amusing though that EP automatically paints the aggressor as being the ‘bad guy’ unless of course that aggressor is the USA.
And yeah, they broke the cease fire. That was wrong of them. So, anybody who is from a country who has never done something unscrupulous, feel free to criticise that action.

They where the aggressor in the WWII not the hero. They attacked Poland,, attacked the northern countries, annected parts of many countries etc.

South Ossetia IS part of Georgia. It was set up by the Soviet Union and remained as part of historical Georgia after the fall of the SU.
Nope! The Georgians split away (think Revolutionary War) from Russia. Russia wants them back, but we’re supporting Georgia because, number one, their wine is amazing, and number two, because we hate the Russians. I agree that we should have peace, but the best way to do that is side with Georgia.

All insults aside, how exactly does being French give you an insider’s viewpoint, so to speak. You are not over there fighting, you don’t have access to the information either government is using to make their decisions. You have to get your facts the same way the rest of us do, your geographical location means nothing.
Well said. Given that this is a WAR, I don’t think anyone qualifies as a good guy. Would have thought that as adults we’d know the world isn’t in black and white anymore, but I suppose that’s too optimistic of me.

NO, don’t be fooled, there’s always a fake explanation to all wars, attacks etc, each time a country is taking over another country its officialy libarating it from some sort of evil or just taking neccasary measures to defend itself, but that is just BS.
Even if there is something wrong going on in Georgia, Russia is just taking advantage of it to achieve what IT wants, not simply helping out.
Basicly Russia doesn’t want Georgia to join NATO, if Russia promotes Georgia as an instable country then NATO will never allow Georgia in.
Another reason might be that Russia is actually wants to take over the Osetia region or whole Georgia. For me, allowing them to do that, with the whole world looking at it, would be the same as saying “you’re big and dangerous Russia, do whatever you want, were too scared to do anything about it”:/

My guess is they’re marching toward the pipeline. It has the added benefit of taking Georgian troops from Iraq to fight on the home front. I personally don’t offer my opinion on the matter, this is just an observation of cause and affect. Georgia has the third most troops in Iraq (next to America and GB). The fewer troops on a war front, the longer it takes to achieve military goals (if those goals are to be achieved at all, again, no opinion offered). America is currently so spread to the world that, unless it can somehow significantly increase man power, it has no capacity for any more military missions. If America’s goings in Iraq were slow before, they’re glacial now. American armed forces have tried to put 50lbs of sh!t in a 10lb bag, and now the bag is breaking.
Maybe if Putlin had said he was worried about possible Georgian WMDs . . . hey it worked once!

Now, in December 2008, even Russians themselves have admitted that there were no ” thousands of killed civilians”, just over a hundred, besides many of those killed by Russians themselves.
Blah blah about town of Chinvali being “leveled” and turned into heap of rubish has turned out about to be BS – if I remember it correctly, around 10% of houses are damaged, ’cause separatists had their positions in there.
Ridiculous when you talk about Russian “peace keepers”. Those guys for years have behaved like occupation forces in Georgia, arming, guarding and coordinating activities of separatists, who have continuously firing at Georgians, even using artillery.
Funny, that even Russian own media had reported, that Russian 58th army entered South Osetia even before the start of the conflict. Just like the Georgians claim. They say – they took it for invasion and acted in self-defence. This looks to be true.
What about Russians using cluster bombs to kill civilians? They killed a reporter, Reuters I guess, live on TV. Were targeting town’s market square. Intentionally. Isn’t it a war crime?
Russian horror stories about Georgian soldiers murdering Osetinian civilians en masse have turned out to be hot air, intentionally spread unsubstantiated rumors, blown out by the Russian media.
Instead satellite imagery shows Georgian villages being torched by Russian backed separatist gangs to carry out the ethnic cleansing.
Youtube is full of videos with Russian and separatist marauders robbing shops and houses. The “golden fork” case has become known worldwide.
Russian media claiming, that American, Ukrainian and Latvian citizens were fighting as mercenaries on Georgian side. So far the only proof has been a single USA passport. As it turned out – of a teacher who lost it in Moscow airport.
