No one actually treats me badly on purpose, it’s just out dated perceptions especially at first but it’s never held me back. I just laugh. All schools should at least get the basic equipment, a lot of times there are real bad social problems affecting childrens home lives that are really to blame… I feel real bad for those kids.

Actually – while I am at it I should clarify that it is not just inner city schools that have disparities. I live in a nice suburban town that goes from million dollar+ mini-mansions to assisted living for the elderly to income adjusted housing for people who can’t afford an apartment. There are 2 high schools kids can go to here. The schools are maybe 2 miles away from each other but they are so vastly different in facilities that it is sad.
I have heard that state colleges look at the grades kids get with an eye on what school they are coming out of. If I get a B average in the really nice school it counts higher than an A average in a poor school because I learned more in my nice school.
There are a lot of things wrong with this country. Things that don’t make me proud. But it doesn’t mean I don’t love my country and that I don’t want the best for it. In my mind the best thing that can happen to this country is a change of leadership style and something that can bring hope and equality to the fore-front ahead of the Neanderthals screaming their messages of racial hatred.

Where do you live that you have never heard racial slurs shouted?
I live in Northern Virginia. Home of the yuppies and the tech corridor – if your people treat you badly at work look around here because people with computer skills are in high demand. I have heard people yelling slurs and insults outside of some of our national monuments in DC. I have been followed around a store with a black friend in the Dulles Towncenter.
Now, either they thought I was going to shop lift or they thought she was. I have never been followed but she has it happen a lot. She is a lovely person who dresses well and makes about twice what I do and has never stole a thing in her life. I dress like a bum on occasion and only wear “real” shoes to work or the gym.
I have seen the schools in DC from one block to the next the facilities are vastly improved.
I think you may be living in a bit of a fairy tale to say people can learn anywhere. It takes books and equipment to learn. It takes more than one microscope to 10 kids (my school had one per 2 kids … how about yours?) It takes teachers who care and kids who feel safe. It takes a hard line to get the thugs out and keep the kids safe. It takes books in the library.
How disheartening is it to know that your school is so poor when 2 blocks over there is a better school you can’t go to because you live in the wrong neighborhood?

I actually live in an area where someone would be shouted at in public. It’s very disappointing to live in such a small-minded, somewhat hostile community. I understand where both of you are coming from, ema and jellybeans. I actually receive negative attention because I am a woman (well, some may find whistles and lewd statements somewhat as compliments, but, I digress). I have found it does help to have a thick skin. It doesn’t excuse the actions of others, but it certainly does help those who are assaulted cope.

Ok, it would be nice if all schools were equal as far as equipment etc., but anyone can learn in just about any situation it actually depends on the person and what they want out of life. Also parents are a huge factor or having someone who cares about you and your future also helps. Where do you live that people are shouting racial slurs at anyone in public? I’m not saying no one is ever uncomfortable in every situation, I’m just saying you can’t always change everyone around you it’s easier to change yourself and your own perceptions. You would be surprised how that can actually change your entire world.

Ok, but in your male dominated career are you given the same opportunities for on job training and professional development?
Have you seen the schools in “ethnically diverse” areas? How about we have some school standardization? Let all kids learn in the same environments?
Have you been followed at work by people thinking you are going to steal something? Let’s see you go school shopping or shoe shopping with security guards following you around the store.
Have you had racial slurs shouted at you by people driving by in cars while you were just talking to friends?
Have your coworkers looked at you and said you are only there for affirmative action?
You can easily talk about getting over it and letting it go but you can go home and not be in a hostile environment. You can go to the mall or the movies or the grocery store and not have anyone be rude to you.
PS – you said you are in the computer programming field once I think? I have a lot of friends in that field and while most programmers are guys they practically revere the few women who join them and there is no real stigma attached. I know a girl who is a senior unix administrator. She is a rare one indeed – how many people specialize in Unix and how many of those are women? She is close to a goddess at work. I really don’t see how the situations are related. Plus you can always file a complaint or get a new job in a different company.

Unfortunately there will always be racist people of all colors – it’s just one of the many human sicknesses we are *blessed* with. That being said, holding on to anger about what someone else thinks about you will hurt you. I work in a male dominated field and I could be angry about a lot of things I see and hear every day but I chose not to focus on any of it. The way I see it no one can hold me back but myself.

There is a history of mistreatment here and it isn’t directed at the white guys. Things are improving slowly but some things take time. When Black people are still profiled and discriminated on a near daily basis it is hard to “let go” of the anger. Maybe once people like YOU are all gone the world and our country in particular can move forward.
It is racist attitudes on the part of the whites that breed the same in the black population.
How does it feel to be a throwback pig holding your country in the dark ages?

I almost agree with you. The problem is one of temporal context. With regards to the current Presidential race, the issue is which contestent is best suited to bring the USA into the future. As much as I personally admire Sen McCain, I believe that he represents the past, whereas Sen Obama represents the future. And, more importantly, Sen Obama is better positioned to make decisions to bridge the generational gap — in the opinion of an old-timer.

Kerry’s medals aren’t the important issue. It’s his denouncement of US troops, and his participation in the fake “testimonials” of Winter Soldier that upset his fellow veterans.

That’s what drove other Vietnam veterans to band together and oppose Kerry.

Well, I did say that I was generalizing, however, there is a difference. When John Kerry testified before the Congress he was an individual relating his perceptions of events. The Military Awards System, on the other hand, is a system designed to vet and weed out unsubstantiated claims of meritorious service or, more importantly, valorous deeds. All claims of valor are checked as much as possible, and if there is any doubt, those claims are disapproved. LT John Kerry was awarded a Silver Star, a valorous medal, so when the SBV questioned that medal, they did in fact call the entire SYSTEM into question. Again, I state, they did so to enhance their own self-serving political beliefs, and to hell with our real heros.

Well, you are wrong. Sen Kerry did not call ALL Vietnam veterans rapists and murderers — go back and look at the transcripts. You are fudging the facts. But since you want to generalize, your buddies the swift boaters disgraced all of the heros of the Vietnam War when they called into question the system that determined valorous awards, up to and including the CMH. Since they questioned Sen Kerry’s Silver Star, they , in effect, said that the system was broken, therefore, who can rely on any award? Their blind political opinions were more important than the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who fought for, died or otherwise served their country. They would rather have pursued their scortched earth policy to serve their own aims than do justice to those who honorably served and received valor awards. They are beneath contempt.

Their insults/fabrications called into questionion the entire Vietnam era military awards system, thereby questioning the all awards, including the CMH. The swift boat veterans were quite willing to degrade any Vietnam era award to further their own political goals and that is more disgusting than any statements that kerry made in the immediate wake of the war. The SBV group didn’t give a shit about anything but their own political ideals and were quite willing to pursue a scorched earth policy regardless of the harm to American Veterans.

No, the problem with Kerry was that he insulted all American veterans of Vietnam by calling them rapists and murderers. That’s why the other Swift Boat veterans came out with the truth about him for the election.

That, and in Kerry’s thirty years of Senate “service”, he hadn’t achieved any more than Obama — which is to say, nothing at all.

As for Obama’s faults, they are many. Chief among them are his close associations with bigots, racists, terrorists and America-haters. There’s also his intimate involvement with the corrupt politics of Chicago. Click my name for some of that!
