Are we helping the Iraqi’s that we are killing daily? Are we helping the detainees that we’re torturing in Gitmo? Are we helping to stop the genocide in Darfur? When a major American city was flooded by a hurricane, did we rush to their aid? And this is just the government. The American people only tend to offer help to others if they have white skin and believe in Jesus.

Sorry, but you really missed my point. It isn’t about the money, it’s about the willingness and desire to help others. The fact that the US has the resources doesn’t make it great. It’s the desire to use those resources to help others that makes it great.

But those things aren’t true simply because we are “great.” They’re true because we have the money and resources necessary. Now, you could argue that we have money and resources because we are great, but I don’t valu the greatness of a country based on how much money they can throw at things, and I don’t think you do either. I value the greatness of a country based on the way it treats the people, citizens and non-citizens alike, based on its ability to protect and provide, it’s ability to keep the peace, based on the quality of the education that’s provided, the standard of living, etc.

The U.S. isn’t the freest country in the world, it isn’t the most democratic country in the world, it doesn’t have the lowest infant mortality rate, it doesn’t have the best education standards, it doesn’t have the best health care, it doesn’t have the best standard of living, we have the highest crime rate in all of the industrialized world, along with one of the highest abortion, divorce, and std, and teen pregnancy rates.

How can a country be “the greatest on Earth” when it’s not the greatest at anything in particular, at all?

You make a valid point and I have to admit I like the way your thinking about change. However, aside from the current issues, the country is great for what it stands for. Greatness isn’t in the fact that it exists, but in what it does with it’s greatness. Wars aside, what other country commits the vast resources it has to help those that have been afflicted with natural disasters, plague, hunger, disease, and a whole host of other problems? Adverse to that, when was the last time another country stepped up and assisted the US? How many countries sent aid and assistance during Katrina? How many countries send aid and assistance because of tornados, hurricanes and earthquakes? You see, the greatness of people is measured not in what they say, but in what they do. I still firmly believe the US is the greatest country in the world, despite it’s problems.

It’s dishonest because simply saying “We are the greatest country in the world” and leaving it at that means that you are ignoring our country’s obvious faults. Bringing awareness and attention to those faults is the only way we can fix them. Wanting to fix the problems with your country in order to make it better, that is true patriotism. Whether or not this really is “the greatest country in the world” is besides the point. The fact is, this country isn’t perfect, and it isn’t until we acknowledge this fact that we start to make actual progress.

So no, I won’t “get the hell out” simply because I do not blindly support my country rather than patriotically attempting to improve it.

John McCain was an independent minded member of the GOP who was whipped into shape by the two competing factions and the Social Conservatives hold his chock collar, they had final approval authority on his choice for running mate so he didn’t even submit his first choice, they disapproved his next two (Mitt Romney and Tom Ridge) for their hand-picked selection. McCain has sold out in order to occupy a house that the extremests in his party won’t allow him to control.

I still think people would find reasons to hate each other, whether we had a 3, 5, 15 party system it wouldn’t matter. Seriously, though, I want to institute a five-party system with instant run-off voting (IRV). Pick your top three candidates, and if your #1 doesn’t score enough votes, s/he’s eliminated from the running and we tally your #2…

Then there would be no more of this Us/Them, Red/Blue, Left/Right dichotomy. Also gone would be the dark horse candidate, as the electable seats would better represent a cross-section of American beliefs.
