And for those of you who say hunters love nature and animals because a lot donate to wildlife conservation, well, if I was hunting something I’d want to keep it alive too, so I could keep hunting.

Well, let’s look at it this way. The cattle are overbred, artificially-selected beasts that probably can never live in the wild. They are raised and slaughtered every day for the express purpose of food production for humans. The parts of the cattle (or pig, or whatever) that we don’t eat, goes into pet food, while the skin goes to leather coats and couches and things, and pretty much every part gets a use found for it (I guess they still make gelatin out of hooves? Is there any other way to make it?) It’s simple economics. Plus, farmers and ranchers are always hurting (or so they claim. I live in Alberta – Canadian cattle country – so I hear it lots). They need your support!

My take is this – if you’re going to eat meat, then at least stick to that which we humans have fully taken over for ourselves, and leave the wild (wild meaning doesn’t need humans to survive) ones alone.

Frankly, a Muslim once told me that Muslims are technically banned from hunting, because Mohammed told them basically the same thing – that Allah has given man the domesticates, and that man shouldn’t be greedy. No hunting, leave the wild things be. So, I call my POV “Mohammed’s Compromise”. I should get an English version of the Koran to double-check this, but really, I find religious books to be a real snore.

So, when I comment further on hunting, THIS IS MY POSITION. One that PETA would probably disagree with, though I have bought their CDs in the past. Don’t listen to them, because the music sucks, but that’s about as far as it goes.

It’s so silly to me that my Obama-voting coworkers are shrieking about Palin shooting wolves “for population control,” and they vote for a man who’d let babies be killed for the same justification. Why are people pissed when wolves die but not babies?

Can’t we be nice to both people and animals? Why do we have to brutalize one or the other?
