Probably because the technology was not there, or not feasible and so they saved us from investing in nothing. It's still a far cry from being there. Just passing a bill is not going to make something happen. Believe me, there is a lot of independent research going on in alternative energy right now. Who wouldn't want to be the one to discover the answer?

If the green energy bills had passed in the past decade we would be a lot better off right now - less foreign debt to pay for our oil habits and cheaper prices at the pump because the demand would be down.
As we stand now the republicans have screwed us into needing to keep borrowing and consuming oil until the green energy catches up. They put the lid on developing better energy technologies and now we are all paying the price for it.

It scares me like crazy! And I blame the current administration for it. How can you NOT blame Bush/ McCain? The democrats weren't bouncing up and down in their seats begging to buy more oil. They were pushing alternate energy bills.
The democrats weren't looking for money from China, they were fighting for veteran's benefits. The democrats haven't been hoping to get a shot at Iran, they want to clean up the mess in Afghanistan, kill Bin Laden and get the hell home.

I really don't understand you Ema, you seem a lot brighter than EP and Bill but you still spout the lies that have been disproven time and again. . I can understand party loyalty but not with such blind fervor that you are willing to sacrifice the future for today's hedonistic politicians.

jelly, you are saying that it is McCains fault that our economy is dependent on oil? How long have we been using oil? He's not that old!! Do you think for one minute that if there were viable alternatives people would not be rushing them to market, even the oil companies would jump on it. They are all about making money you know. The oil companies and their investors are making money because we depend on oil for virtually everything we do, not because they are evil (which they may be, some may not, it has nothing to do with it). If you came up with a good idea for some product that everyone in the world needed to survive and you made tons of money, would that make you evil?

Well considering that the person has completely recanted and walking into an I told you so situation, it isn't very cynical when you warned them from the start. Also if a person changes completely out of what you fell in love with in the first place, then why would you expect them to stick around? Love is a two way street. Compromise comes from both ends. The lover didn't compromise when they decided to reinvent themselves, why expect i_tego to compromise if the other party didn't?

If I suddenly changed everything about myself, I would be an idiot to expect my girl to stick around longer than it takes to find out that I couldn't be compromised with.

Tego, with all respect, you sound very cynical. Just the unselfish act of joining the military is heroic. Also, it's very selfish to expect people who you love to do what you think they should do instead of what they believe they should do. That is conditional love, I will love you if you do what I expect you to do. If you really love this guy you would encourage him in what HE wants to do. He may make mistakes but those are his mistakes to make and learn from. We are all better people because of lessons learned from mistakes we have made IMHO. Also, I wouldn't discount the power of the Islamic movement in the world and in this country. Islamic nations are out breeding every other nation and in western countries their populations are out breeding the westerners as well. What do you think will happen when those populations reach voting age? So, you see it's not just a military threat although that is quite real, it is a philosophical threat, which is probably the most dangerous for westerners.

i think militant isalm is a red herring, and i laugh whenever people act like its a threat. there is no chance in hell they could ever overthrow the US. cause some damage? probably. but a major, scary, mommy save me threat. naw.

trust me, as nice as you are for saying it, my ex doesn't give a rats ass if you support him. he's destroyed himself, and wants nothing more then to come home, or reverse time.

but also, to clarify. i don't think our soldiers are bad people, or "babykillers" to quote assholes from the vietnam era. i just don't agree with thier decision. i don't feel safer because of them, i don't feel obliged to them. and the fact that i can't be openly gay and join pisses me off. this war has done nothing but kill people, and destablize a major area of the world (at least worse then it was). its wrong. plain and simple. and it's helped bush warp the constitution and increase executive power beyond reasonable means.

i'm only semi-liberal. this is my PERSONAL point of view. so don't feed me any "typical lib" lines because i'm pretty sure most "typical libs" would slap me if i went around espousing this idea all the time. and, just to say, the only 3 other people who have ever agreed with me- 1 was an independant, and the other 2 Republicans.

i'm sick of all the "hero" talk, and people who say it my ex, and to my brother as well, it really pisses them off. i don't think you get to be called a "hero" unless you actually do something heroic, and justy singing up to join the military and be a grunt, doesn't cut it. now if you save a family from a roadside bomb, or your unit from a sniper, have at the title. you get it then.

That was quite possibly the best summing up of how America appears to other countires that I've read yet. 'I’m not proud to be an American at the moment either. We’re a shit country with shit values, and shit leaders.' - but not shit people, as you yourself have shown, especially in saying that you're trying to make a difference. I've seen a lot of arrogance coming from Americans, especially with this looming election. I don't understand how so many people can say their country is in a terrible state, then talk down every other country as inferior. There is no best country in the world, there are several great ones, and I believe I'm very fortunate to live in the one I do. There is no denying America's global influence is huge, but look at the population you have compared to other countries. I believe all America needs to do to be a whole lot greater is to stop complaining and blaming, and move on from "this sucks, who can we sue/attack/invade?" to say "ok, this sucks, lets fix it". You're a country with a lot of people with their hearts in the right place, all you gotta do is move on a little.

I have to say this, and I know I'm SO gonna get slammed by EVERYONE.

People say things like "don't support the war but at least support the troops".

I can't. I can't support someone who volunteers for the military while we are in this war. The war is wrong from the beginning, and people keep feeding me these lines about "serving the nation" and "they protect YOUR freedom" and blah blah blah, but I mean, we've lost more rights and freedoms it seems to me since this war started. I don't feel protected or free. I feel maligned and indignant.

My brother was in the army, but he joined in 99, when it still seemed like a respectable choice. I'm proud of what he did, and at least before he got out, he never had to go to Iraq. He is scared right now that they might call him back. He was so happy to get out, and has been working with the Obama campaign here in Fl since it started. He's been against the war from the beginning as well, and he only joined because my parents couldn't afford to help him with school.

My boyfriend and I recently broke up over this. He decided out of the blue to join the Army. It had somehting to do with his parents and we argued over it for days. With him it made me even angrier, because he had to change everything about himself. He got rid of his fav CDs and clothes, and went online and switched all his accounts from "gay" to either say "straight" or nothing at all. He practiced "walking striaght" and "talking straight", not that he was flamboyant, but maybe just not maculine enough to where it could be called into question. I was infuriated. Here he is , completely chaning himself, getting rid of parts of himself that made me fall for him to begin with, for what/ To serve in the Army, and Army that would kick him out if it ever learned the truth, to serve a country and a military that doesn't like him, and wont even grant him basic rights. It disgusted me. I left him, I told him I couldn't support him doing it, and he was just becoming another part of Bush's war machine, and that I wouldn't be here for him when he got back. He's in Iraq now, and I pray that he's safe, but he shames me, and he tells me how miserable he is (we do talk when we can), but I mean, WTF did he expect. All vesitges of the guy I loved are gone, and he can't even remeber his reason for doing it anymore.

I especially like how the people's Presidential votes are mere recommendations for the Electoral College to vote for them, and that's what counts. Sets a very good example for everyone, worldwide.
