Not to trivialize Katrina, but that tidal wave was just so far beyond any other natural disaster that I have ever heard of, it deserves special attention. And like with Katrina, a large number of those lives could have been saved if people had been more proactive. Fuggin’ wave was hours getting to southeast India and killed people at sea level because the whole goddamned nation of Indonesia (also Thailand, Philippines, etc) failed to warn them what was coming. That was 10,000 dead who could have been saved with little effort but weren’t.

So that wave and Katrina do have that much in common, that the incompetence of responsible parties made a bad situation worse.

To the caption maker, chivalry isn’t dead because some soldiers aren’t helping some old lady dragging some suitcase. Who knows what it might contain, or whether or not she refused help.

As a cavalry soldier and officer, I have removed my cover and blouse both before, during, and after physical tasks. I have often lounged in a parking lot by my vehicle or somebody else’s, or an empty lot, waiting for a vehicle. Given that a salute to a senior officer does not require a complete and proper uniform, it would be easy for all of these soldiers to come to their feet, a proper position of attention, and conduct the ONLY courtesy REQUIRED of a military individual.

If you want courtesy to individuals regardless of requirement, raise your children more properly.

And ccliffe has a point: the vegitation doesn’t look like it’s from Afghanistan or Iraq, it looks like a colder, wetter climate. Also, there is an iron fence on the background (a gray haze, with intermittent vertical stripes of more gray. The building also looks more like your average American building than a middle-eastern building.

Besides, it’s on a parking lot. Since when does Afghanistan/Iraq have parking lots? Rectangular open areas meant for cars, perhaps even made of asphalt, but I think it’s pretty hard to find a parking lot in Afghanistan or Iraq in such a good condition as this one.

But still, the woman has a brown skin color, so it’s still possible she’s carrying half her weight in explosives. (/sarcasm)

i’m definitely a strong woman who likes to do things herself, but i’d never tell a man off for opening a door for me, or carry heavy things for me.
