Trickle down economics do work, the problem is actually getting the rich to spend. Taxing the super rich further wouldn’t help, neither would lowering taxes. redistributing wealth might work, though there are serious legal and ethical issues with that. Giving tax breaks to the wealthy would only work if they spent money in America and invested in domestic companies. Increasing the taxes would either motivate them to leave, or would motivate the government into more frivolous spending, though given our current debt crisis is practically required to balance the budget.

We might as well have a faith based government – we already have a faith based money system. The ONLY value that our current money has is that the person who is paid with it has faith that it will be desired by the person he tries to pay with it. When everyone wakes up to that, I shudder to think what will happen. I will not be listening to complaints unless they are from people who have documented proof that they tried to do something to stop it. That should save me tons of time.

The thing is, it’s all very much out of balance. One one hand you have people who are so rich that they could use 20 dollar bills as toilet paper for a year and still be rich. On the other hand, there are people like me who have to rely on the few generous rich people just for high school. (Thank you JKCF!) And then the people who live in a half-rotten mobile home and scour the town for dropped wallets all day just to get along. The scales are out of balance……

But as everyone knows, the heavier side goes down and the lighter side goes up. One day this is going to change.

Seth I’ve seen it, and ya, they need to stop self medicating like that, it’s not medicine. I am talking about people that have jobs. Wyrm, I don’t know if it’s most, but I lived in a rural SE AZ for some years and knew business owners who could never keep employees after the first paycheck and that was why. I am not armed with facts for the entire country though… So just take this as an off hand comment on what I have seen as a contributor to the problem.

I’m not claiming that alcohol and drugs aren’t a problem, but I think you are seriously overstating how much of a problem they are. The only time I see anything like what you describe is in communities with unemployment rates in the double digits. People self medicate with drugs and alcohol to cope.

Yeah, I had the same trouble last week trying to get home from Tech. There’s an AM/PM that usually has at least some up here during the day on Spring Street. You just have to wait awhile. That was last week anyway. This week things have finally calmed down, methinks.

A lot of it also stems from alcholism and drug use which is rampant. Some people will work until they get their first paycheck, quit and go out and get high or drunk. Then when they run out of money they do it again.

Well said. That’s why I’m trying to find a job I’ll like. You want to be good at it so you can move up in the company. If you enjoy it, you’ll be good at it, and if you’re good at it, you’ll get paid more, and in turn, you’ll enjoy it more. It’s a healthy cycle!

I think a lot of laziness on the job stems from resentment. “This is my $7.00/hour rate. You want more work outta me, you pay me more, or give me healthcare.” Not all laziness, mind you. I work for the state so I see a lot of different kinds of laziness. But laziness is complicated, isn’t it? Take the laziest guy in the world, put him on a task he loves to do, and he isn’t lazy anymore, is he? So, isn’t that one of the things management is getting the big bucks for, figuring out how to motivate people? I think in most cases where you see lazy workers, you see bad management right behind them.

I was actually going to say something to that effect. It is easy to blame the workers. If they are lazy, that can’t be helped. But if there is a problem with the work, then perhaps that can be improved to retain employees.

They can’t ALL be lazy, least I wouldn’t think so.

If people are quitting after one day, perhaps you should take a closer look at the working conditions. It has been my experience that any employer will work an employee to the point of inhuman treatment, then fire him/her for inefficiency. That’s why Personnel became “Human Resources”: a resource is something to be exploited, used up and replaced. But that’s just been my experience. I’ll shut up now.

I am not talking about numbers from CEOs, and nor should you trust them. Some former hotshots are going to be led away in handcuffs, not least the ones from Fannie and Freddie whom we *know* cooked the books.

But nor am I talking about the finances of a few companies. I am talking about the national economy.

Politics aside, and as simply stated as I know how–the mortgage thing happened because lenders were pressured into making loans to people who shouldn’t have qualified. The bad loans were rolled into bonds which were sold to both American and foreign companies, such as banks and brokerage firms, which is why *their* markets are so deeply affected. THEY TRUSTED US, and we sold them a bill of goods–literally.

The only numbers I am asking you to trust are (a) that the American economy is growing, and (b) we are not in a recession. It is an economic technical term, not an emotional condition, and we don’t meet the criteria. Both facts are easily verifiable.

And by the way–what fantasy land? I cited Zig Ziglar as saying that the media are alarmists in general, and in this case about the economy in particular.

The fact that the economy is growing, albeit slowly, is indisputable; you can check any number of sources. Likewise the fact that we as a nation are not in a recession, although you may be *locally*.

I am far more broke than you are, probably more so than anyone here, and I take personal responsibility for that. I plan to change it by using the principles in Dave Ramsey’s “The Total Money Makeover” (https: / / beta.daveramsey.com/shop/prod326.html), which is by my bedside.

That I am broke ain’t the gummint’s fault, nor will they get credit for my prosperity when I achieve that. MY responsibility.

We didn’t have gas in Atlanta for two weeks (I had to use gasprices.com to find it and go out at 3 and 4 in the morning to get it–and I drive a limousine.) But it has come back.

The 15% figure is disturbing. Could that be due to local conditions? Where do you live? Georgia’s unemployment is at its highest in a long time–at something under 6%. Your username sounds as if Michigan wouldn’t be far off . . .

Poultry production. The workforce here is so bad that we can’t pay people enough to stay and work. I’ve never seen the like of it………they would rather sit home and stay on welfare than work an actual job……..quitting after a day……….but of course, they drive better vehicles than I do so I guess it’s not all bad. The point is, there are jobs out there, but (in my town, at least), no one wants to work them.
