Take me back to 1910, John!
Well lets see, no abortion, not supporting equal work for equal pay. Seems like he is halfway there.
He call’s them, The good ol’ days!
Easy now
I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask to see your citation for that claim
You can get a citation for anything from McCain and for the opposite simply because the old McCain help totally different views to the new McCain who realised he couldn’t get the nomination without reverting to toeing the party line and completely abandoning his “Maverickness”
“In the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe vs. Wade, which would then force X number of women in American to undergo illegal and dangerous operations.” – John McCain
“I do not support Roe versus Wade. It should be overturned” John McCain
Different pay. I should have indicated that better. I need a citation for that.
NEW ORLEANS — Republican Sen. John McCain, campaigning through poverty-stricken cities and towns, said Wednesday he opposes a Senate bill that seeks equal pay for women because it would lead to more lawsuits.
Senate Republicans killed the bill Wednesday night on a 56-42 vote that denied the measure the 60 votes needed to advance it to full debate and a vote. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had delayed the vote to give McCain’s Democratic rivals, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, time to return to Washington to support the measure, which would make it easier for women to sue their employers for pay discrimination.
McCain skipped the vote to campaign in New Orleans.
“I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what’s being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems,” the expected GOP presidential nominee told reporters. “This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system.”
The bill sought to counteract a Supreme Court decision limiting how long workers can wait before suing for pay discrimination.
It is named for Lilly Ledbetter, a supervisor at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s plant in Gadsden, Ala., who sued for pay discrimination just before retiring after a 19-year career there. By the time she retired, Ledbetter made $6,500 less than the lowest-paid male supervisor and claimed earlier decisions by supervisors kept her from making more.
The Supreme Court voted 5-4 last year to throw out her complaint, saying she had waited too long to sue.
end of quote
John McCain supports equal pay for women. He thinks companies should do it voluntarily.
Different article linked on my name.
So government should NOT play a greater role in private enterprise, but it should regulate “health” issues for women? Because THAT is the function of a government? Am I, and all the other women in this nation, somehow not an equal citizen?
Because business is a private enterprise, your body is not.
Plus, some people are just more equal than others.
I will do my damnest not to go into my rights of the woman over her body rant. It gets mean since it makes perfect sense to me that a woman’s body is her own and not the government’s. *twitch*
We did that yesterday anyway. Read the one with me and Froufrou. It was very civilised.
I did and it was. I approve.
Minerva and I are two sides of the same coin, I think. We just want what’s best for everyone, we just have different views on how to get to that point
Still waiting for cat fight video. You can be as “civil” as you dare.
@ DWM – LOL
@ froufrou – thanks
“Because business is a private enterprise, your body is not.”
I dunno what you do with your body, but my body is certainly a great deal more private than any business.
That’s just the desire to play moral police. Fact is that, even though they say they are “pro life” for example, that doesn’t mean that “pro choice” people are “anti life”. It simply boils down to this: I beleive this-and-that, but I treat it as fact, and thus I want to enforce this-and-that on everyone.
Government not regulating private enterprise got us in the current economic problem. Social democracy is what is on its way ppl accept it and move on (but not .org… those ppl are jackasses.) You are a citizen, protect your rights and do not think for one second that McCain and Palin will try and protect anything besides their pocketbooks.
Ceefax you took the type right out of my hands! Good call. We used to have two good candidates, now we are have to live life on the edge til we figure out how badly the Republican party is going to try to cheat this time. If I wasn’t an atheist I would probably pray.
if you weren’t an atheist, you would be a republican.
Are you going to say he (McCain) supported the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay act?
Think you’d better re-read the article. You got it backwards.
I think you should re-read my first comment, consider what my second comment was addressing, then get a brain.
Seriously, I was asking Froo-Frou if he thought Mcain supported a bill that he clearly has opposed.
FrooFrou is a girl.
score
That’s what she said
and did
Me too. Lynn is showering off the wax and ice play. Along with other things we did for her birthday. I try to give good presents.
I will cross fingers and even utter a small prayer, hoping for your success.
Do you not get that not being able to use an apostrophe
(or commas, or capitalization)
kinda makes your comment more funny than potent?
Yay! A grammar N.A.Z.I!
Comma splicing is sooo wrong…..
Nazi is an acronym now?
Oops! I meant NA.ZI. (Nationalsozialist)
Have you ever noticed that those who loudly demand that English should be the official language of the USA, and that any who come here should speak nothing but English, seem to have the least respect for the language? They will mangle it in text and in speech, and should anyone dare to correct them, that person will be branded as a grammar or spelling Nazi. Hypocrites, all.
Ironic, no?
Hey! I like people who can use grammar, I wasn’t being mean to Sally.
Oops! I hope you’ll forgive me. One almost never sees the term “grammar nazi” used in an approving manner.
I just think that if you are from here and can’t speak/write in the
language (at least almost) properly, your opinion is probably not very
important. Voting info in Spanish pisses me off.
My mother/older sister are naturalized, and speak English pretty fluently.
My wanting to implant birth control into anyone receiving government
assistance is kinda Nazi-esque, I guess.
Did I see the word Nazi? I think I did!!!
Time to discuss my wang. Go ahead.
Oh, fine. I give in. What’s a wang?
wang
“penis,” 1933, slang, probably from whangdoodle, an earlier term for “gadget, thing for which the correct name is not known.” Many such words (thingy, dingus, etc.) have been used in slang for “penis,” not because the actual name was unknown, but because it was unmentionable. Another possibility is that the slang word is a variant of whang “large, thick slice” (1634), which earlier was used in the sense of “thong” (1536) and is itself a variant of thwang, an alternat form of thong (see thong).
For the record, I adore you Minerva.
Aw, jings.
DWN said it so why did I even bother asking?
Thanks for the definition.
Adoration is all that I ask. You can admire my Shiny new hammer. I relived the impostor Thor of Mjollnir for safekeeping.
Minerva: I can do that.
AC: …
What?
Did someone say wang?
You know it, angel.
But but… I wanted the hammer!
Maybe I’ll let you touch the hammer. The fake Thor cant have it anymore though. He came back as Mirrorman. I can’t wait for the next incarnation.
I don’t know how that whole process goes (getting public assistance), but I think bc should be made available at no cost (perhaps with a bonus even!), and they should have to sign that they understand that and know where to go to get it. Make it idiot proof–like “while you wait for us to process this paperwork, you can walk in that door right there for your free birth control.”
Same is fair for the guys. There are “men” in our area with 9-10 outstanding child support cases open. Once you get more than so many (what do you think, 2 or 3??) different child support cases on one guy, maybe a little snip-snip is in order. I’m not saying hold them down and do it, but while it’s fresh on their minds (like while they’re waiting to post bail), show them to that door also!
I’m ok with helping people on the language thing, but I hate to see people breed kids they don’t want.
Me too. I have jokingly entertained and then seriously entertained the idea of spaying/neutering our idiots. It is the responsible to do.
Don’t Americans elect them?
Ya, we have a lot of work ahead of us.
Can’t we just spay/neuter EVERYONE until they can show just cause for being a parent?
I would be cool with parental permits though the grandfather clause would be painful.
B/C is free…it’s called Planned Parenthood…but some ‘men’ (and
women) find it a hassle to go get it. It’s free to peoples who don’t
have an income and at a sliding scale to those with low income. I say
if you can afford it-use it!
On another note…in a McCain/Palin America-this won’t be
available.
And…some people have multiple births not because they don’t want
them but because they can get assistance and never have to work
if they can prove that childcare would cost more than they would
make…therefore they can just sit at home while I (as a single,
struggling working mother with a conscience and motivation) work
to pay taxes to pay their procreation ‘salary’.
And you have my endless sympathy. Lynn and I have two boys and I work to support them. She plans to get back to work when Orion turns 9 months which is three months away. I told her I would take care of the money but DAMN that is hard nowadays… We’re still making it though. X_X
You named your kid Orion?! Oy.
And as my girl is currently asleep in my arm, I had one of those moments: Phe is almost four months now. There is an improbably slim possibility that our progeny might one day crossed romantic paths. Mostly because her name would end up Ophelia Nexus, which sounds rather pervy. [/ramble]
Your daughter is just slightly younger than mine
But then again, mine was born a tad early, so are they really the same age?
Could be. The midwife says Phe is physically precocious in her development, like she ought to have been born sooner.
Ophelia Nexus sounds like a starship captain or something, rock on!
LOL, well my firstborn is named Michael and he is four. He is in the dating pool too.
I do think Ophelia Nexus would be cool.
I’ve no problem with it, either (though I’d love it if she married a guy surnamed Paine).
How many camels does an arranged marriage run these days?
Well I believe that 9 is my opening request and then let you talk me down to 6 perhaps.
That’s not how it is in California. You have a maximum of five years for life. While you’re on public assistance you must go to school full time or work about 32 hours a week. I think even sometimes they would rather you work than go to school. You get help with childcare. It’s call Child Action in Sacramento. They pay for your daycare & if you make a certain amount you pay a portion. Even once you stop receiving public assistance, the Child Action agency will keep helping you pay for the child care. I believe for two years they continue. Some people of course screw around & don’t handle business, but there has been a time in my life where I needed assistance & it really helped, especially with daycare, because that’s like paying rent & when you’re on your own handling everything with no help from your family, it gets really rough.
That’s what it’s there for, to help when things gets rough. I’m glad it helped.
The particularly galling thing about the “any who come here” part is that there were people here already who didn’t speak English, when the English-speakers came here. Furthermore, there were French speakers in the Louisiana Territory when Jefferson bought it from Napoleon. There were French speakers for generations after that, in fact, right up into the late 1900s.
It isn’t just immigrants. And there is no earthly reason 300 million people all HAVE to speak the same language.
I do feel there ought to be a commonality of language, though. I’m personally embarrassed and ashamed that I only speak one language.
There are still French speakers of a sort in Louisiana. Cajun is a Pidjin (did I spell that right?) form of French that is still prevalent in the more remote parts of the state. It’s weird to listen to, but very pretty if you keep an open mind
it’s pidgin
you’re right, it’s pretty to listen to

hmmm i guess you dont realize he has a woman running with him to be vice-president huh?
A woman who doesn’t support many of the women’s health issues, mind.
I seriously cannot believe he had the balls to do that. What an ass.
By health do you mean killing unborn babies? Don’t worry looks like your guy Obama is going to win then you can can kill your babies even after they are born.
Wolvie – go curl up in a corner and STFU. I bet you have a penis, don’t you?
Yes, please…keep all unwanted babies alive so we can put them in our military for later use. Now there’s an idea.
My family, who are republicans (but voting for Obama this year) actually believe (a bit tongue in cheek) that having disposable people for the military is EXACTLY why some are so anti-abortion.
If they’re voting for Obama, they’re NOT Republicans.
“No true Scotsman” fallacy. Look it up.
Have you officially expelled Colin Powell from your ranks?
Yep ! Kicked that racist out yesterday !
Wait. Seriously? You are scarily closed-minded. You are going to be very disappointed…I feel for you.
Are you the official person labler now?
A lot of voters have the old Republican values of small federal government and just won’t vote for McCain or another term of the same ol’ awful administration.
Killing actual children is the GOP mantra I’m afraid, it’s easy-peasy to wring your hands and go all bleeding heart for a bundle of cells living off someone else’s body, once they’re born they do stupid things like needing fed and health care and when you delusionally think that next year you’re gonna be earning £250,000 you sure as hell don’t want a tiny sliver of that your money to go to some stupid unwanted hungry poor kid with cancer.
Let me state this in another way:
When Democrats are in charge of the economy and social support systems, there are fewer abortions. When Republicans are in charge there is more substance abuse, child abuse, fewer resources for poor young mothers, fewer jobs available to support a family, and as a result, more abortions occur.
Republicans had control of the white house and congress for 6 years. If they actually wanted to end abortion, why didn’t they? The truth is they don’t want this issue to end, because folks who can’t do the math continue to vote for them if they call Democrats “baby-killers” (see robo-calls, 2008), and they remain in POWER, which is what they really value.
Because you need a majority in the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade; you can’t do it with a congress majority and the white house alone. They were successful in ending certain partial-birth abortions, but I think the consensus on Roe v Wade is still 5-4, so it hasn’t been overturned yet. Great conspiracy theory, but it isn’t backed up well.
Actually, if you suggest Republicans were only trying to gain power, but refused to do anything with said power in order to keep this “power,” it would defeat the purpose, so this doesn’t really make sense in theory either.
Keeping this an issue perpetuates their power, particularly their power to line their pockets and enrich their friends.
No it doesn’t, because pro-life is a sill a minority in this country, and there are quite a few Republicans who aren’t pro-life. If they wanted to gain as much power without respect to actual morals, they would adopt a more attractive position (ie pro-choice) to get more votes. Actually, I think this is the strategy of some Democrats, because they often say things like “keep abortions rare AND legal!,” as to try and attract people from both sides.
Musicmom…..I…I think I love you…
There is no such thing as partial-birth abortion. And the procedure they outlawed was the safest form of late-term abortion there is, with a far lesser risk of uterine perforation. Now they have to dismember the fetus to get it out, which not only is more gruesome but leaves the woman at risk to have holes poked in her uterus, which can lead to sepsis, which can lead to death.
Two for the price of one. How “pro-life.”
The stupidity of this comment makes me lose fate in humanity.
How appropriate that the way you worded that post makes it sound like you’re talking about your own comment.
And now we have no fate, to boot! No more afterlife for us! : (
There never was one in the first place. Those who cling to a belief in such have merely failed to progress beyond the “bargaining” phase of dealing with mortality. But that’s a whole different flamewar.
There might be, we don’t know. However I doubt we have any real bargaining power with whatever happens to the animating energy in our bodies.
My afterlife is as follows:
1) I die and my consciousness ceases to exist, all those little electronic firings in my brian die out and everything shuts down, then starts an immediate decpmosing process. Everything goes to black. No more thoughts. No more fears. No more love. No more suffering. No more happiness.
2) I will be buried in either an eco-friendly shroud w/o emblaming or a wooden coffin w/o embalming.
3) I will get all gooshy and gross and then dry out. My shroud/coffin will rot and i’ll seep into the earth and turn into dirt, plants, dust, whtever happens.
4) I will continue to be, but in other forms because matter cannot be destroyed, it can only change form or turn into energy, but there will always be a part of me existing somewhere, it may not be what I identify as myself, it may not be an imaginary soul, but I will go on, as will everyone, and everything ever existing.
In… The ground…
heh
per-chance you have a twin who thinks like you minus the BDSM who is gay and lives in Fl?
if not, you need to find one and ship him down…
Well, technically I am what is called a service dominant. I am definitely a dominant personality but the BDSM is something I do for others first and myself second. I functioned just fine without the BDSM but I wouldn’t give up getting head. That is way too good.
As for cloning/twin, not that I know of. However, I am willing to also a DNA sample taken for your own personal and godless experiments.
*hugs*
Gah… Grammar fail. I am willing to give a DNA sample for your own personal and godless experiments.
Stupid brain was trying to say the same thing two different ways.
i am *heave* at work *heave* and everyone *heave* is staring *heave* because of the *heave* VERY loud *heave* outburst of laughter you just gave me
OMFG i needed that, today as sucked so badly…..
*hugs*
You were just auditioning for the engrish page.
Honored to have helped Tego.
Minerva: Ya, I like that better than my brain failing…
i_tego_arcana_dei:
Save your family a ton of burial costs. Have them stick you in the compost pile. Gives a bright fresh meaning to the whole ‘ashes to ashes, dust to dust’ don’t you think?
Then in a few months I can use you to give my eggplants that extra boost of nutrients…
Since you can’t possibly know whether there is an afterlife, your comment is pointless.
So Ceefax, a foetus is just “a bundle of cells.” By the same token, aren’t we all? I may have misread your comment, however; it seems to me that, in your opinion, a living, breathing, feeling, child amounts merely to cost. Do you really think so?
I’m not sure about Ceefax, but I’m pretty sure a foetus isn’t much of anything. A fetus is a bundle of cells though.
Foetus is merely Fetus rendered in British English. See also honour, valour, etc.
Thanks n8, I hate having to explain that.
Think nothing of it. If I ever do procreate, I’m considering naming the child Cloetus just for the funny looks that would provoke.
I LOLed
Me too.
Foetus is one of the greatest industrial bands known to civilization.
I don’t know how anybody could argue with this: if there is no self awareness in the bundle of cells, then killing it is acceptable. Once there is awareness, the bundle of cells is precious. This still leaves a period between four and six months that we can argue over, but I think this would at least narrow the focus of the debate.
Hurrah!
Miscarriages deserve social security numbers and full burials.
That is an AWFUL thing to say. A miscarriage of a child you want hurts worse than you can imagine or you wouldn’t write crap like that.
James’ comment was sardonic (or at least I assume it was). It’s intended to be a darkly bitter sarcasm.
Here in Colorado, if Amendment 48 passes, a fertilized egg will be considered a person. While it would help to get rid of abortions, it also opens up a world of problems when you begin to wonder if said blastocyte gets property rights and so forth. If a woman miscarries, she could be tried with negligent manslaughter. IUDs would be contraband, as they prevent uterine implantation of a person, leading to his or her untimely death. So on and so forth.
Yeah, and it gets even more interesting if you realize that 15% of known pregnancies miscarry, and another 15% of UNknown pregnancies miscarry and are mistaken for early or late menstrual periods. So that adds up to 30% of all pregnancies as identified by HCG hormone levels. Does this mean that all women in Colorado are going to be followed by the menstrual police?
Since when is a fetus able to breathe?
Something everybody seems to forget in all their little debates about when it’s a fetus, when it’s a baby, etc., is the fact that before it’s born it’s using a woman’s body as a life-support machine.
And the anti-choicers in particular cannot reconcile to this for some reason. They refer to pregnancy as a state not unlike a person sitting in a house. Of course, if you sit inside a house you are not *connected* to that house.
I wonder why the facts of pregnancy are so difficult to grasp?
I think that humans are worth more than a foetus and if you’re honest, so do you. If abortion is made illegal, what punishment do you think women who have an abortion should get? The same as someone who murders a child?
Argh.
That’s all that deserves.
you mean without having to go through all the hassle ov waiting for them to grow up and convincing them to join the military?
Obama is actually for killing babies after they are born. If an abortion fails, he believes that no care should be given to the child, even though it was born alive.
I’m pretty concerned about John’s “health” myself.
Dementia FTL.
Where did my post go? I used a bad word…
Anywho, I’m glad my “health” is a big (expletive) joke to him. Why would any woman vote for this guy? He’s a danger half the population right off the bat.
John likes women, just look at his VP! [/sarcasm]
Ah, but she’s the RIGHT kind of feminist, not that radical liberal type with an agenda (equal pay, equal rights, freedom over her own body, blah, blah, blah).
HAH, it’s like a pun!
Which is to say, not a feminist at all.
Yep. Women without their prime of health (ie supermodels and ex cheerleaders, ex beauty queens) are unimportant to him. Just look at how quickly his passion for his first wife cooled once he came back from the war and she was disfigured! And then he found himself a better deal, an ex cheerleader that still had her perfect body instead of needing crutches and actually had a rich family that could finance his political ambitions.
And then there are still rumors he was cheating on her, and she was so depressed she was addicted to prescription painkillers.
I know this isn’t really the most damning of evidence, I just think it exposes an underlying misogyny that I find pretty worrying.
Nice post, Eddy. Thanks.
And now she’s scary-looking and drug-addicted, but Palin’s still in the prime of life and a former beauty queen to boot.
If they catch those two together discussing sexual policy in the Oval Office behind closed doors and don’t impeach both their sorry asses, I quit. This goes way beyond interns into something… wow.
Being a sexist. Ur doing it rite!
Ity’s the Dems who are the sexists, smearing Palin for being a woman.
Uhm…Hillary Clinton ring a bell? A ton of dems supported her…
Well, I shouldn’t just say a ton…almost half, and quite a few Repubs, at that…
What? no. you are wrong. stupids supported her.
I’m pretty sure we smear as more a traitor to her sex then her actual sex. Not for being a woman, but for being a woman who uses the system established by her predesessors (who were extreme feminists for thier time, and some for ours) to puch an agenda that will all those years of work back.
Wow. That sums it up quite nicely!
This.
Actually, they’re sexist for accusing Hillary voters of playing the gender card, for suggesting that Democratic women would vote for Palin because she’s a woman, for calling Democratic women racist because we wanted the woman to get something first for once, for choosing a running mate for Obama who voted FOR the so-called “partial-birth abortion” ban, for excoriating Hillary’s supposed “racism” while Obama nominated a man who was amazed at how “articulate” Obama is… and if McCain wins, guess who’s gonna be blamed first?
The Dems sure are misogynist (just like the GOP) but Palin has very little to do with it.
You truly have no life, do you EP?
Feminism is not having to be nice to every woman because they’re a woman. That’s sexism.
http://vimeo.com/1891426
very cool.
Obama wants to eat babies and use their stem cells for himself.
“eat”?
South Park reference. A paralyzed Christopher Reeve was portrayed as cracking open baby’s spines and sucking out the stem cells, curing his paralysis and giving him super powers.
<3 southpark
Are you the same idiot that told my dad that Obama was an Arab and wanted to be sworn in under the Koran? Yeah…thanks for that…it’s hard enough to get him to take a different viewpoint…you just ruined at least 5 family functions for me.
jerk.
You mean like that Muslim congressman who was sworn in on Thomas Jefferson’s copy of the Qur’an?
Muslims are allowed to run for office, you know. So are Arabs, otherwise Ralph Nader wouldn’t be running. Again.
Ok…let me explain. I’m totally ok with whatever race/religion runs our country as long as they do a better job than that of the past 8 years. I’m saying that my dad is not ok with it and is not as open-minded about it than I am. In any case, my dad likes to argue and unfortunately…so do I (thus the reason it’s ruined a few family gatherings).
Sorry to interject, small detail to correct: Nader is in fact Persian, and not Arab. I’ve already discovered, it’s not good to confuse the two. It’s worse than confusing New Zealanders and Australians!
Well, you got the ‘tard part down pat, don’t you?
LOL, this is wonderful!
Well, the pic is wonderful, the idea it represents is truly terrifying.
I couldn’t believe he did that. It was bad enough when I heard it (I listened to the debates on the radio), but to believe he actually made such a belittling, trivialising gesture…
I ordered you come chill pills. be sure to eat something before you take them though.
i guess no one here realizes that his running mate is a woman and that Obama actually contradicts himself so much…saw a vid of him talking to some people (forgot where) but he stated that the old ‘slash and burn’ tactic for running for president is over with and yet he has commercials ‘slashing and burning’ McCain? also Obama is only looking out for one class when McCain wants to help all classes (i saw that debate for the two to talk and realized that McCain made more sense) Obama wanted the middle class to be given alot of stuff when McCain would buy out houses with people who owed debt and would help them pay that debt off….hmm i wonder who’s plan would actually work?
He looks very… dinosaurish to me. Those fingers are held up like little raptor claws.
Very graphic but also very true. There is no reason to force a woman to do something with her body she is against, including breed.
The only rape I am for is not technically rape but roleplay. Actual rape is a disturbingly horrible experience that I can’t imagine forcing anybody to birth a reminder for. If she wants the child, so be it and more power to her. If she does not, she shouldn’t be demonized for HIS action.
This coming from a man, for those who care.
You forgot the incidents where a woman must be required to give birth to her brother or nephwe.
I’ve met instances of both. The former had to keep the pregnancy because of the state law that required parental notification for teenagers; the latter was eighteen and was allowed to abort.
carp! i made a smart argument?
tuna! Yes, you did.
Halibut and cornflakes, Indeed!
