At least, that’s how I understand the actuality of it.

It’s easy to find things to criticise in any government, the Cuban regime has survived an absolute maelstrom of attacks from successive US governments, actually because it has the support of the overwhelming majority of the Cuban people. Not chinese style “Smile or we’ll jail your children” support. Cubans openly criticise their government and the society they live in freely and without fear, their biggest concern day-to-day is the constrains of the US embargo, which prevents any company wishing to do business in the US from trading with Cuba. Basic medicines which save life such as paracetamol and penicillin are probably harder to obtain than in the poorest parts of Africa.

Most of the so-called Political Prisoners are nothing more than CIA stooges who were caught out. And wasn’t it the Mayor of Miami who recently called the vociferous Cuban Exile lobby in his city “A Bunch of spoiled-rotten malcontents”

And all the Big 3 plants used to be THE opportunity in town. Now you can’t even get in unless you are related to (someone living) who currently works there.

Apparently, both Ford and GM are shutting down Windsor plants, resulting in the loss of at least a couple thousand jobs, or more. Quite devastating for a city of only maybe 350,000 people or so (sizable for Canada).

I’m SO glad I’m in Alberta, even though I have nothing to do with oil, cattle or wheat. except perhaps on the consumer end.

I suppose I’m also slightly biased seeing as how my mother currently works for Chrysler. But I have heard that Chrysler was one of the better places to work for as far as parts and assembly. And I know that Ford, in the past, had a lot of opportunity for people. And that GM was rather stick to business and get it done.

But it’s all only getting worse right now.

He was Parts Supervisor at the Windsor HQ for his entire life, pretty much. He hated his job, but was insanely good at it (fantastic photographic memory. He didn’t need books to know what part number was what, and if they had any.) Near the end of his career, he quit his job and refused GM’s offer to come work for them for more money – always said that GM guys were a bunch of arseholes. He was offered his job back at Chrysler two weeks later, and took it.

I worked in a outsourced Windsor parts plant for about a year, and found out Grandpa was right. GM swept in, practically took it over, and all the fun went out of the job almost immediately. It was a good place to work until they came in with all their dictates – and they neither owned the plant nor were they the only customers (Ford and Toyota (or was it Honda?) were bigger customers, I think.

Though I drive a Pontiac, it’s just a third-hand Adam Sandler car that was the only thing I could afford. It’s ready to die, and I don’t really care except for the fact that I probably won’t be able to replace it for a while.

I could be wrong. I’m Canadian, and we never stopped trading with Cuba. Funny thing is, I’ve never met a Cuban up here (though I know lots of folks who like to holiday there.)

Frankly, sometimes I wish that Canada would do similar – or at least, stop everything we have from becoming foreign-owned (even Hiram Walker’s – Canadian Club whiskey, you know? – is owned by a British company now. And Tim Horton’s is owned by Wendy’s! Gah!

I was really hoping that Magna (Belinda! Belinda! She ain’t no politick girl! – sorry, Air Farce ref) would have been the one to buy out Chrysler the last time it was up for sale. Sigh. Maybe next time.
