You know what would have been even more win? If they’d kicked the hate mongering bastard in the balls a few times.
No, humiliation always works better than violence for the hate mongering bastard types. Showing him the picture afterwards would have been funny however.
That is true!
A kick in the balls now would be really pointless.
A kick in the balls 50 years ago, however? Epic win, if delivered with sufficient force to permanently decommission them.
You’re working on the flawed premise filth like that would be humiliated by such things. Their sense of decency is so totally screwed I can’t believe they would be.
That’s the beauty of a good, swift punt to the danglies. No matter how screwed up your morality is, it’s gonna hurt.
You can’t fight hate with hate. You can’t fight violence with more violence. The unintended consequence of violent action is to excuse further violent action. The only way to reduce violence and hate is through love and forgiveness.
Using violence is only going to turn these people into martyrs. They’re RL trolls, they want a response from people, good or bad. The best action is probably to point out the irrationality of these people to educate others and then ignore them and wait for their hate to die with them. Same thing with hardcore racists and other bigots.
They wouldn’t be martyrs they’d be afflicted hippocrates.
This a**hole and one of his daughters came to my friend’s funeral. I have such a place in my heart for him and his spawn. Why do they get tax exemption?
I think you mean “hypocrites”. And I agree. They would count it as a battle scar.
I deny being a pacifist, but the way to fight ingorance is through education.
Yeah… love and forgiveness thing didn’t work out so well against Hitler.
Then again, Ghandi kicked British butt without ever actually kicking. So maybe Adolf’s the exception that proves the rule.
exceptions dont prove rules, they disprove them!
I still say he needs a good kick in the bollocks.
He certainly deserves one, but I do have to agree on principle with the not resorting to violence.
A reasonable chance and I would make him a hell of a matyr. You guys can be the bigger men/women for me. I’ll be the jerk.
And as usual, I’ll be holding the camera.
I understand the whole non-violence thing but I am with you, a good swift kick to this guys balls would probably feel marvelous if you were the kicker.
this is very true
This staunch atheist/secularist agrees with you wholeheartedly.
overplayed if you ask me =\
I say sink your fist into his solar plexus… then steal his signs and pants while he’s down. Kick him in the balls and he can still get pissed enough to get up, punch him in the solar plexus and he’s too occupied trying to breath to get angry.
Me and you should hang out and exchange vendettas and how our imaginations plan them out.
These people protested my school. And they make money by suing people who assault them on these horrible protests. So really, touching them in any way is what they want…because you just funded the next protest.
(By the way, we protested their protest and outnumbered them 20 to 1. You should have seen the horrible signs they had their kids holding.)
i bet they do want people touching them…. it’s an odd method their using….
He probably didn’t have any balls anyway
a few times? that’s over and beyond!
Now that’s comedy.
I’m 85% sure this was from/near Mathew Shepard’s funeral.
I read a blog by one of the guys who did this, it wasn’t at Matthew Shepard’s funeral, but I do believe it was near another funeral.
*Shakes head* I can’t understand such hate from people who claim to represent the one who said the 2nd greatest commandment was to love your neighbor.
Selective Bible reading for the loss.
You’re exactly right. Selective out of context readers. People like this make actual Christians look bad
This guy is just a dumba$$.
I’m sorry, but I cannot believe in a God with no sense of humor…which is the god this frowny-face hater is obviously in thrall of.
My dad, who’s much more informed than I am, says the original Hebrew parts of the Bible are absolutely full of inside jokes and double entendres. I think this guy should learn Hebrew.
Yeah, I like to think a lot of the current parts of the Bible have been misinterpreted or even just flat out changed since the original versions. But, that’s just me. I really can’t see how some of the stuff in the Bible would actually be included based on how crazy it sounds. I guess that’s what makes me a sensible Christian-type, and yes, they do exist!
You should see the difference between the Old and New Testament. It’s like God went through some mid-life crisis between the 2 or something. (loose from the fact that they were written in different periods etc etc, but God = timeless or something like that, right?)
Still, these guys are insane. Would be worse if they would actually be right, yikes…
Mid-life crisis? That beats my celestial Prozac theory. Hair plugs and a Corvette! And a mega dose of Viagra.
It’s funny you say that. In college my Philosophy professor told me he had actually completed the Seminary (sp?) training and is an ordained Preist and while we were studying parts of the Bible he explained to me that the Old testement (or Jewish Bible/Torah) was written by many different people and that is why somethings seem contradictory and such and then the New testiment has it’s different books John/Paul ect, and differnt people has reprinted it in different ways changing things. But a lot of Fundamentalists will argue that.
An example; the King James bible reads “God shall not suffer a witchh to live” but in the Hebrew context which I learned in Hebrew classes when I was a kid reads “God shall not suffer a poisoner to live”
But this guy is just crazy and gives all Christians a bad name!
Oh, and your spelling was right. A priest-in-training-and-discernment is a seminarian.
“Witch” and “Poisoner” are the same thing! (At least they were in Snow White … as far as that big juicy apple is concerned.)
…I, as a Wiccan, must object…Mildly. Witches are not all poisoners, and in fact, very, very few are. BTW, That guy with the signs sucks. I hope someone teaches him a non-violent lesson.
Technically – at least scientifically – speaking, Wiccans are not witches.
A witch is more like a jonas on a ship: someone with an innate quality, known or unknown to themselves, that causes evil. If they practice magic, they’re technically sorcerers.
Yay anthropology!
and now we know
and knowing is….wait thats witch talk..
BURN THE WITCH! BURN HER!!!
So THAT’S what’s up with the Jonas Brothers. Yay anthropology!
AND BURN THE JONAS BROTHERS RAWR~
they make teeny girls happy! THEY MUST BURN
In my 1 semester in Atheis…I mean Religion class, it was presented as the result of the new convenant brought by Jesus. Basically, JC said “Forget all the sins of the fathers stuff. New rules: God loves you, so just be good to each other and chill.”
Or else he said “Go forth my children, and abuse, torture, oppress and kill anyone different from you because I ain’t letting ‘em into heaven. Especially if there’s any hanky-panky going on.”
I guess it depends on which church you go to.
Damn you internet, creating doubleposts.
*sigh*
The difference between the Old and New Testament God? Is it that hard to figure out? OT God is all dark and pissy; NT God is laid back and chill. Why might that be? Anything pertinent happen between those two sections?
God got laid. That’ll cheer anyone up.
LOL, herb, you rock sir.
All I can think of is the pilot episode of Tripping The Rift now…
thanks. Although, I dont mind being reminded of Six… Oh my..
Mmm, sexy robot…
That comment is pure win.
EPIC WIN
*snort* Oh herb, as others have said, that’s wonderful, and if I may say so, sacrilicious! I only wish getting laid could be a secret to solving the world’s problems.
ORLY? Seems to me that in the OT, Yahweh just threatens to burn your city to the ground. In the NT, he sends you to Hell/Hades to be tortured forever. How do you get “chill” out of that?
Have you read the book “Misquoting Jesus” it talks about how that might have happened. I’m fortunate to know so many sensisble, cool, Christians. Thank goodness for you all.
I have that book. Its amazing how the bible has been changed throughout time
Yeah, it was very interesting to read, especially as regards to women (although that may be because I’m a woman myself). Just reading about how the earliest manuscripts seem to have a lot more reference to women disciples, women deacons etc, and the discrepencies that appear in later manuscripts.
In one conversation I’ve had with my mom about how I can’t right now share with beliefs I was raised with, my mom said that yes, we know women used to have active roles as deacons and other church leaders, and to which I said “then if we know that that was originally the case, then why don’t we make it the case now?” (I am aware that there are protestant sects that have female ministers etc).
A lot of churches don’t have problems with female teachers and such, but draw the line at deacons and pastors. The main reason being the book of (I’m drawing off memory here, fogive me if I’m wrong) Corinthians where Paul told the church that their women needed to be silent. There is some discussion as to whether he was referring to JUST the woman from Corinth or if he’s talking about all women. That church was notorious for having internal problems, and he gave them instructions he didn’t give to other churchs and kind of ratcheted down on them because of their idiocy.
Now, I don’t have a problem with women teachers and ministers, I do have a problem with women as the main pastor or leader of a church. God set it up where the man is supposed to lead, and it’s hard to change my mind about that. Women help, and guide the man with their wisdom, but the man is ultimately responsible for the teaching of the flock, and will be held accountable on their behalf for their actions, as well as his own.
Which is why I will never deal with churches. Man has no entitlement nor do I see why God would say such. I can, however, see why a Man would say that.
One interesting thing that Misquoting Jesus mentioned was that they thought that specific passage in that specific letter was a little suspect, because it seemed unconnected to what came before and after it, especially because at the end he sends particular greetings to a woman in the congregation. Plus in other very early Biblical texts there were mentions of prominent women in a town becoming supporters of Christ, and mention of female disciples etc.
I grew up in the Eastern Orthodox church and our sunday school teachers were mostly female. Orthodox priests and decons can marry (though bishops on up have to be celibate) and a priests wife had some status, but it was mostly social status within the church.
I don’t consider myself a Christian anymore (though I have nothing but respect for Christ) and agree with DWN about thinking there’s nothing that gives men the sole right to be in charge, but everyone certainly has the right to their own interpretation.
The thing that annoyed me most was this priest’s wife talking about some of the nuns at the catholic school she worked at, she said they weren’t going to see their bishop while he was visiting, because they thought women should be priests and he didn’t. Her words “a woman serving liturgy with a pregnant belly would look ugly!” *head desk*
you are a disgrace to your gender. how on earth can you say that women have no place leading. what does a y chromosome have that is so superior? people like you are the reason that women are treated as less than men, the reason they earn 80cents to every mans dollar and the reason glass ceilings still exist. I am embarassed for you. I am thoroughly glad I am no part of a religion that promotes beliefs like this to its followers.
I never said or implied that women are inferior. I also never said or implied that women could not or should not lead. What I said was that I (personally) feel that women should not be the leader of a church. The head pastor, if you will. Of course there were highly placed women in the Early Church. Of course there were women disciples. Lydia comes to mind, and she led Bible services by the river.
-
Women are intelligent creatures. The person with the highest IQ in the world is a woman. Men, as a whole, tend to be better at leading. Think of this analogy: Women are good cooks. The best chefs are men. That’s not disparaging, its simply identifying that more men are better chefs than women. Just because men TEND to be better at leading doesn’t mean that women can’t be leaders. But can you imagine if the passionate and emotional nature of a woman were to lead a church down the wrong path? Men tend to be more analytical, making them better leaders, and not as prone to fits of passion.
-
You need to actually do some research on the answers you give. If you actually read what I posted here and there you would see that I don’t believe what you think I believe, and you are instead inferring something from ONE part of ONE post that I made. Just so you know, I make more than 90% of the men I work with. I make almost as much as my boss makes, and that’s without a promotion. The other people in my department make about 20% less than I do, AS MALES. The glass ceiling is only there if you allow it to be there. Before you flame me, that’s in MY OPINION, and is something that has been proven out by my personal work experience. I’ve never had to deal with being seen as inferior or with being paid less than the men I work with.
-
That doesn’t change the fact that men are, as a whole, better leaders, and should be intrusted with the leadership of a church before a woman should. If for no other reason than the man will be held accountable for all of the sins of his flock, and a woman should not have to go through that judgement at Judgement Day.
EPAC WIN FROOFROU. -highfives-
people need to forget about petty religions if the world is to progress!
I am A conservative christian, and while I do not really approve of homosexuality, I won’t hate. God does not hate gays. He loves all. I’m in a club here at Texas A&M called Aggie Allies. The club basically says what I just did, We may not approve of homosexuality, but we do not believe you should be discriminated for it.
I apploud you, I don’t believe you have to agree with everything in the world, but it is nice to know you took the important things from your religoius beliefes. You make me smile.
Wow! This is guy I can agree with. I am the Norwegian(as in the country Norway) bible belt, and I have grown up with christianity all around me. And I’m so fed up with all the selfrightous christians. It’s nice to know there are reasonable people out there. Respect!
Most of us are reasonable, I promise. It’s just that the unreasonable ones are so much louder and flashier than we are.
I am a pagan and, while I do not advocate feeding christians to the lions … I am willing to make an exception in Phelps’ case.
I thank you for that as well. My parents are Eastern Orthodox Christians, and they don’t approve of homosexuality, but they believe Christ teaches you to love everyone. They’re against gay marriage, but actually pro-civil union, and in general think that it’s a serious problem that the most vocal christians are so negative. My mom thinks Christians need to be more vocal about what they are for, not what they’re against.
I consider myself a Pagan-Unitarian mix, what I believe is constantly evolving, and while not gay, I have a lot of gay friends and coworkers (I’m in music/theater) and it makes me very angry when hatred and vitrol are directed at my friends by strangers.
I am against gay marriage, but for civil unions. Some say that it doesn’t make sense for me to say that, but it really does. Marriage has, and always will be, a religious institution. Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hindu etc. all say that marriage is a spiritual bond. The state only got involved for tax reasons, so they do not get to decide what marriage means. A civil union is fine, but it is a violation of religious freedom to redefine what marriage means.
Okay, so…atheists can’t get married?
If marriage is a religious institution, clearly atheists aren’t approaching it with the reverence a religious person would. With commitment and love, yes. Faith in each other, yes. Faith in a higher power? No. Respect for the ceremony in a sacred perspective? No.
Moreso, there are some Native American tribes who approached marriage in a traditionally religious manner, moreso before they were assimilated into a Christian society’s points of view. Homosexual and transgender people were considered ‘two-spirit’ people in SOME tribes, heralded as natural healers and shamans. These men and women were allowed to marry others of their same gender. Is the Native American belief to some tribes not a valid example?
One might argue that the spiritual and social acceptance in many Native American tribes has declined horribly, but there are still healers, shamans, medicine men and women who practice that spirituality and also believe in the traditional acceptance of gay and transgendered men and women. Again, this depends on the particular tribe.
In that context, it is a violation of THEIR religious freedom to not include ‘two-spirit’ unions.
Neopagans, pagans, pagan reconstructionists and others who are acknowledged under the US government under the Wiccan banner to the extent where US soldiers can choose to have pentacles on their gravestones in military cemeteries, on the whole (there are a few exceptions, as with any group of people) have absolutely no problem with marriage between two people of the same gender. Handfastings are also considered an extremely spiritual bond. Vows are said before God and Goddess, friends and family, to each other, the anniversary is celebrated each year, pretty typical of your average marriage, actually.
Would it not be a violation of religious freedom to define marriage in the context of a few select religions and not all, or even lack of one?
Personally I’m for constructing civil unions across the board, calling it a civil union in the legal sense, and let people decide what they want to call it on a religious or non-religious level.
Moreso, if I might add, many eastern religions do have a lot of flexibility, traditionally, for transgendered and gay people. Take for example the Hindu Hijra and the attitude toward transgendered Thai in the context of Buddhism. Society may or may not reflect these conceptual attitudes in certain areas and during certain times, but if we’re strictly speaking on a basis of relligion and not societal interpretations of them…which I think are ineffectual anyway, as societal ‘norms’ and following of religion do vary from time and geographic location.
Before anyone says it, I realize Paganism and Native American beliefs are the minority instead of majority. But Hindu is somewhat of a minority in the US, while Christianity might be a minority in India. Certain areas have a lesser concentration of one race or age demographic instead of the other, but this is not to say their basic rights or concerns are to be dismissed.
I’m sorry, but your religious argument really does not hold water if you really think about how varied religions and their sensibilities are, not only on a superficial level, but within the interpretation of time and area.
I applaud you.
That might have been the single best reply I have ever read.
…why is it that the word “Unitarian” is first used way down here?
A lot of what’s in the bible was a civilizing influence on the people of the times. It’s strange to think about it now, but the old “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth” was actually a limit put on people to keep them from killing someone who stole bread. You could only dish out so much punishment. And like when Jesus said not to get a divorce, it was actually a compassionate thing, because at that time a man could marry a virgin, hang on to her for a while, then kick her out and say “we’re divorced”. This meant that she had no worth in her society and no real means of support.
I’m not a biblical scholar, but I’ve read it from cover to cover, and it made much more sense to me that way. You can see an interesting evolution (did I actually use that word??) of a people in warring tribes taking slaves and stealing women to the early Christians living in something of a commune where women were valued far more than they ever had been.
You have it exactly right about the civilizing the tribes bit. The main reason God told his people not to eat pork and other meats was because they weren’t cooking them properly and were dying. The no tattoos thing came from not wanting the people to blend in with the other tribes. Most of what is in the first five books is just God showing His people how to stay apart and be special.
That true. Jesus was definetely far more pro-woman than many of his time, or after his time.
Also half the stuff in the bible is based on science…
old, increadably inacurate science. Like the bible being agains homosexualityh the only reason that the bible forbids it is because it was once thought that the baby came from the men and that the woman served the purpose of incubation chamber. Thus it only prohibits male homosexuality and says nothing about female homosexuality.
Is that your only base for saying it’s got old inaccurate science? Because among other things that are correct, the bible specifically said the earth was round (in Isaiah & I believe Job as well) when only a few hundred years ago everyone thought the world was flat. That’s not ‘incredibly inaccurate’.
The bible also says that pi is exactly three. And the world was created in a week. Six thousand years ago. And the sun orbits the earth. Everyone back then knew the earth was round, the Greeks even calculated its diameter to a few percent! The idea of a flat earth was a romantic 18th century invention attributed to the ancients to show how ‘modern’ society had improved.
I’m not sure it says anywhere that it was created in a week but rather made inhabitable. But I’m not an expert on the old testament. I know the new testament says (Jesus says) something to the effect of Above any other commandment love one another and love me. All of the legalistic commandments, I believe, were intended to protect us from hurting ourselves. No where in the New Testament does it say anything about sinners going to hell but rather non-believers. I know quite a number of gay people who are Christian and just like the rest of us Christians (even those who pretend their sh*t doesn’t stink) sin just like liars, murders, theives, rapists, cigarette smokers potheads and homosexuals. All sins are equal in God’s eyes, therefore a Christian, like the guy in this picture, who judges is just as guilty of sin as a gay person. So when this man says “F*gs die and God laughs” in reality he must also include himself in that principle. The only time God laughs when gay people die is when he laughs out of joy for being so happy to see them finally come home. I believe people like this man should be called anti-christians. I hope when he gets to the gates someone with whom he can’t argue or protest against opens his eyes to the people he turned away from God by making such untrue accusations.
I picture God pulling a Burns/Smithers with this guy. “Oh, yes, I’m listening. could you plese come a little closer, just a bit more to the left. (smiles as he pushes button to trap door) Excellent!”
For the record I in no way hold in the same regard a killer or a gay person. I believe that gay people don’t have the choice to be who they are, that they are born that way. When Eve and Adam brought sin into this world the future generations were condemned to be born into sin. God gave us the new testament along with His son because He saw us all hurting because we couldn’t help but let Him down and fail at following the commandments placed forth upon us. He loves all of us equally. Wether you’re born as a blonde person or a brunette or black white gay straight non-believer satanist or Christian. We’re all equal to Him so why shouldn’t we be to each other.
Yay for the good type Christians! I love you guys. I wish more Christians like you spoke up more often. You let your idiots speak for you too much.
The idiots tend to drown out the intelligent ones *sigh*
The intelligent ones aren’t screaming over nothing so they don’t make that much noise. The idiots are screaming and dancing naked in the streets. Definitely going to get more attention.
ewokgirl, froofrou, if you start a church, I’ll come to services.
And I will come to watch…
And I… will bring a camer-…. wait what? Church? Can I be the
Gospel Choir Leader? Preeeeeease?!
We will have Holy Oatmeal Rasin Cookies and some really awesome choir robes too!
Can I be the crazy guest pastor? I promise to be so incoherent that people just clap and shout “Hallelujah!” out of pity, thus preventing any future politicians any embarrassment.
*In his best southern evangelical voice*
And when Jacob slew the lions with 12 smooth stones and fives loaves, his nets were so full that Moses left the ark!”
I lol’d
i haven’t gotten past the mental image of FrooFrou’s robes yet…or is it… *disrobes?*
A girl has to leave SOMETHING to the imagination! So in my church, big, heavy robes
The robes aren’t like a burkha, right?
No no no, choir robes with the big V thing that goes from front to back. And shoulder pads. A pompadors
Hmmm. *and
Froofrou you rock! I’m so glad to have you with me on this! I think our choir should wear whatever the f they want
And no collection plates! Free church for everyone!!!
“And upon this altar that looks suspiciously like a bed…”
I would create such a church, but it already exists. Mine is cool, we show up in jeans and a tshirt usually. Mike, our pastor, says that the 11th commandment didn’t say “thou shalt dress up for church” and we have an official doctrine too: What is in the Bible. nothing more than what Jesus said
Genesis 1 is a poem, also, it’s different from genesis 2.
Being literal doesn’t work in this case.
I’ve said this in other threads as well. The age of the earth being millions of years and Creation happening in a week are not mutually exclusive. There are several verses in the Bible that refer to time being immaterial to God, and that ‘a day is as a thousand years,’ so I have no problem with the ‘seven days of Creation’ taking a hell of a long time to actually happen.
I was conversing with the Almighty the other day. I asked him what omnipotence is like. “Well,” He said, “a hundred million dollars is like a penny. A hundred million years is like a second. A hundred million planets is like a pebble, and a hundred million words is like a sigh.”
-
I thought about this for some time.
-
“So, God,” I asked, “can I borrow a penny?”
-
“Yeah,” He said, “Give me a second.”
LOL I’ll have to remember that, It was really funny
Click my name for somethinelse funny
If that song gets stuck in my head, I will track you down and beat you with a copy of “The Greatest Hits of the Pet Shop Boys”.
Here’s a funny about how the McCain campaign is being run. He’s like “the Penguin”
That. Was. Epic.
Now there’s a link in my name for one that’s “Geeks Only”
Yay, that was “teh awsum”
froofrou: Hear! Hear! Some people look at me funny when I tell them my father was both a biology professor and a pastor. This has never been an issue for me.
I suspect you will appreciate this: I always want to ask the super-literalists what they make of the book of Song of Songs. Lovely and erotic.
Two strains of thought on Song of Songs / Canticles. Really depends on one’s attitude to sexuality. The ones who blushed (a lot of the early Church’s teachers, and almost everyone meeting for a cuppa at the Country Women’s Association) have constructed a mental guide to suggest that this has everything to do with Christ and the Church – it’s all allegory.
Hebrew scholars are less certain, but they begin to faint if pressed. The only other avenue to think (and a surprisingly high number of OT academics) is to accept that SofS is all about rumpy-pumpy, sticky fingers and boobies. I haven’t preached on this one yet. Thank God.
The images! MAKE THEM GO AWAY! -claws at her eyes-
I took college level classes on scripture (at a catholic university) and was taught that the reason characters in the old testament were said to have lived such long lives (e.g., Methushelah) is because the authors needed to fill up a pre-determined length of time with a bloodline … making the ancestors live ridiculously long lives meant you didn’t have to invent so many names.
Or perhaps there wasn’t the same sense of time before the Mayan calendar?
But in the the creation story it lets us know ‘the evening & the morning were the first day’ second day, etc. so that’s why I believe it took a literal week. Who knows how long it lasted before he started working on it, because it also says that the earth was void & without form in the beginning.
Uh, you’re saying that, because the bible gets ONE thing right, it’s not “incredibly inaccurate”? With that sort of thinking you’re probably quite religious.
And, when the bible says the earth is round, it makes it sound like a disc.
Something written 2000 years ago by a bunch of goat herders would make a pretty sh*tty science textbook.
No one is claiming it would. What they are claiming is that science and the Bible are not mutually exclusive (at least, no one I know is claiming that it would make a good science textbook. God doesn’t spoon feed you everything, He expects you to use the sense He gave you and work it out on your own)
Um yes, everyone who wants intelligent design and creationism to be taught in science class is trying to equate the bible with a science textbook. And there are a lot of those idiots in the US.
As a future science teacher, I anticipate having this issue come up some day.
I will simply take the stance of Islam during the European Dark Ages/the Muslim Golden Age: “God made everything, and has apparently left behind the tools with which He made things for us to study. In this class, we will be taking a look inside God’s toolbox. Atheists and agnostics, just ignore that preamble.”
I take exception to being called an idiot just because I don’t believe that the Bible and a science textbook are mutually exclusive. You teaching Darwinism in the classroom, putting forth natural selection as a theory, is the same thing, We’re not equating The Origin of Species with a science textbook, merely putting it out there as an alternate view.
froofrou:
The term “theory” in science is very different than in religion/philosophy. The former relies on careful study and analysis (and can be disproven with a single fact), while the latter relies heavily on faith of one sort or another.
Maybe we need different terms for a scientific theory (like gravity) and a philosophical theory (like the illusion of free will).
Right Herb. Things like intelligent design do not belong in publc school education. Hence the Flying Spaghetti Monster and all his noodliness. B If you want to teach your own kids your religion, fine, just do it at home or in sunday school. Let the public schools teach the actual, verifiable, science in the science classes.
I am not disputing the theory of evolution. It is proven that organisms evolve and adapt over time. But Darwinism does not explain where that first organism came from? Is it really that difficult to believe that a higher being set off the chain of evolution instead of it just happening by accident in a pool of ooze?
Not arguing the possibility there was another influence. The point is that it should be left out of public school, where only the real science should be taught. The intelligent design part can be taught to kids in their own homes or faith communities. Sunday school or whatever.
-sticks her head out of her refrigerator-
Actually, the same could be said about Darwinism. It really isn’t any more verifiable than Creationism from a scientific viewpoint; in fact, maybe even less. So why is it always tought as a fact instead of the theory it is?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to go around screaming about how evolutionists are all evil and they’re secretly plotting with the homosexuals to release Satan from Hell via a demonic ritual which involves sacrificing albino virgin kittens. (Well, if they’re kittens they’re probably virgins anyway, but you know what I mean.) But I still think it’s a bit unreasonable to force us Christians to try and make sure we’re rid of all evidence of our beliefs, scientific and otherwise (the former of which, I might add, is every bit as supported by the evidence as yours) by the time we’re through the school doors, unless you’re willing to do the same.

If you would’ve actually read what I posted, you would’ve seen that I put “among other things”. I’m not going to list everything scientific that the bible wrote. You can read it for yourself.
Has anyone ever thought about how if we had followed the commandments and ate the food suggested for us to eat perhaps we wouldn’t need all the science we have now. Or if people hadn’t lived in sin there would be less diseases and cancer to cure.
Want some proven facts that most doctors will support check out “The Maker’s Diet”.
I’m not an expert on the bible or on science just theorizing a possible connection between the two. Not that anyone gave me a penny for all my sighing.
…facepalm.
Plus the fact that in those days they needed all the heterosexual sex (and babies) they could get back then. Nowadays, not so much.
i am so with you on this one
It was at a one-man protest at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, Jan ’03. The two kids in question went up to Phelps, asked to have their pic taken, then opened their flannel before the photographer shot the pic. This originally ran in the humor mag there (which I was an editor of at the time, that’s how I know all this). Phelps was in town to protest a proposed Nashville city council ordinance that would give same-sex partners domestic partner benefits. He stopped by Vandy to protest its remarkably gay-friendly policies.
I’m actually amazed that this pic is still making its way around the Intertubes almost six years later…
The guy with the signs is Fred Phelps, leader of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. Check out the Wikipedia article as I have no time to discuss how disgusting the guy is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_phelps
Go, Nerdy Kids. I can’t stand those Westboro Baptist people.
God doesn’t like them, either.
Well, I’m sure God loves them… and would LOVE the chance to see their faces when gay people are walking around in heaven with them. Owned.
That’s assuming a lot about the westboro people.
Oh, right, the whole actually making it there part. Guess asking forgiveness only counts when you know you’ve done wrong, eh?
“Heaven” may turn out to be a lot redder than they originally anticipated.
Don’t know the kids, but the grinch in the middle is the Rev. Fred Phelps, who’s congregation normally protests at funerals of gay people and at funerals for soldiers killed in Iraq.
Wow. they seem like a very compassionate bunch…Very reflective of Christ (please note sarcasm)
This guy protested Mr. Rogers’ funeral because he thought Mr. Rogers was “gay acting”. (Mr. Rogers was a minister himself, was married and had kids, and was an overall wonderful person, unlike this dolt.)
Oh now I’m pissed… Do NOT mess with Mr. Rogers. He is one of the finest Christians ever. He was eccentric but in a very loving way. I checked into his history and was rather surprised. He spoke to Congress so they would increase funding for PBS and so they wouldn’t ban VCRs. Very, very good man.
Fundies actually tried to get him to denounce gays and pagans. His response to gays and pagans: “God loves you just the way you are.”
OH that is so ridiculous!!! I think that maybe that Papa Phelps himself was gay but trying to fight it so he tried to make others feel ‘guilty’ or something for ‘acting’ gay. Just my theory.
This makes me a little less skeptical about today’s teenagers.
Is that Don Imus in the middle?
No no.. Imus would have a sign saying “God hates nappy-headed ho’s”
But not in bed…
win
Guys like the one in the middle make me sick. How could anyone who claims to be a Christian be so clueless and hate-filled? I know, I know–history is full of them.
Twisted, innit?
We have one of the few things that’s fundamentally good and folk use it as an excuse for the crusades, the inquisition, sectarianism, devolution, partitions…
Mind you, half of those things were masks for pure politics…
Humans are horrible, aren’t we?
It’s one of the reasons to avoid organized religions altogether.
hmmm. dunno.
If everyone did that what would happen to fellowship o’ the holy spirit?
There are plenty of people in this country who don’t follow an organized religion. Some have congregations of a few or of many, and some practice whatever spirituality on their own. Fundamentally all religions teach the golden rule “do unto others…” They just word it differently. With Zen, it’s all about being interconnected with everything. With Wicca it’s “Do no harm” and respecting nature, etc. They all pretty much have some sort of “karmic” system that punishes those who don’t follow this rule. I think it’s basically due to human nature. We’ve evolved to form societies, and this rule is a catalyst for that.
Plenty of people have spiritual practices that may or may not be attached to any deity, that they practice solitary. There isn’t necessarily the need for “fellowship”. Community provides security, but it’s not necessary. Mob mentality forms too easily when people aren’t careful about this. Henceforth, we get groups like Westboro Baptist, or branch Davidians, or inquisitions, etc.
I’ve never needed a church to believe in a higher power.
Nope just the higher power to believe in, eh? Churches aren’t always a good thing, but God’s house always rocks! Trouble is finding God’s house anywhere in this world.
Lynn said Oh God the other night, I said Master would suffice.
LOL, you’re right it is hard to find a place I can trust as far as churchs go. So I just don’t.
The way the early church was set up in the New Testament is not the way God wanted it anyway. The whole idea was a big commune, and guess what? It failed!
God only says that you have to get together with other believers in order to ‘recharge the batteries’, if you will. He says that where two or more are gathered in His name, then He is there.
And I like the master thing
Out of curiosity, what do atheists scream during sex?
I would think Darwin or Caligula. Speaking of recharing the batteries, Lynn was very down this morning so I plan to beat some cheer into her.
I’m still sick
I’m hoping the peter-cillin that I was offered this morning will help.
I’m sorry but my flogger won’t go through the screen. -_-
Herb: You still rock.
“Out of curiosity, what do atheists scream during sex?”
Bill Hicks (RIP) had a great bit about it. 60% is visual, but the verbal portion was:
“Chemical chance! Chemical chance!”
“Oh, fate and destiny! Fate and destiny!”
“Chemical chance… ugh! Big Bang! (heh, heh)”
I miss Bill Hicks. Did you see his last performance? I’d like to quote the ending:
“I’m gonna share with you a vision that I had, cause I love you. And you feel it. You know all that money we spend on nuclear weapons and defense each year, trillions of dollars, correct? Instead — just play with this — if we spent that money feeding and clothing the poor of the world — and it would pay for it many times over, not one human being excluded — we can explore space together, both inner and outer, forever in peace. Thank you very much. You’ve been great, I hope you enjoyed it.” — Bill Hicks
Still love the “It’s just a ride” from “Revelations”.
(And the “positive drug story”)
Most of us use “Oh God” just because “Oh Omniscient Deity Figure!”
Just kinda ruins the mood.
I had an egotiscal statement but I eated it.
That’s why I’m a member of a “disorganized” religion. Small-minded bigotry like WBC isn’t what Jesus preached at all.
Using idiots like this to justify a misinformed judgment against all “organized” religions is just as bad. I’m agnostic–raised Catholic, and haven’t really left, but don’t really practice–and I DO believe in organized religion. The religion of chaos and “whatever feels good” isn’t any better.
The Westboro people are criminally insane, full of hatred, and have nothing to do with God. They are not Christian, they are hardly even human. But I have known a lot of amazing people who happened to be priests, nuns, reverends, monks, and lay people of the church who were shining examples of faith in action.
Yeah, I have to agree. “Religion your own way” allows people to just pick and choose the bits that make them feel warm and fuzzy: a kind of “here’s everything” that gives you nothing. I mentioned fellowship because the Bible says it’s important. There are Churches that become mobs, but there’s a difference between being part of a fellowship and being part of the herd. In a true fellowship there’s “one body, many parts.” In a fellowship people can learn from each other, they can be different, they can agree to disagree, they can argue without hating each other, they believe the same things fundamentally. In a real fellowship, you can stand up and say “you’re wrong” without fear of being burnt as a heretic.
Organised religion is meant to be a family, something separate individuals are all part of. Families are important.
It doesn’t have to be “whatever feels good”. I think people can be thoughtful about religious questions and find paths in life that are useful and healthy without following some established doctrine.
That’s what I was getting at. It’s not dualistic. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Unfortunately, the christian influence on western society leads people to think of things only in terms of black or white. Also, “religion your own way” DOES work for some. Saying it “gives you nothing” is judgmental. Just because that’s not a best fit for one, doesn’t mean that discovering one’s own place in the world through personal spirituality isn’t what works best for somebody else. People can have structured organizations, loose faith communities, personal spiritual quests, or none of the above. That “family feeling” is fine if that’s what works for you, but it’s definitely not for all.
Ya, Bob the preacher isn’t required for me to read a book that he is sermonizing about. Nor do I need to pop money in a collection plate either.
Yep, I wasn’t criticizing those that need the structure, but just to have peopel think about it a little.
Read Romans 14. That’s my new favorite chapter of the Bible
I’m all for not judging the other guy. It’s a lot of christian hypocrites that need to think a little harder about it. LOL
Without organized religion, there would be far less food aid and disaster assistance to places like Sudan, New Orleans, and Burma. There would be no self-help crafts that we buy cheaply, and the crafts people get paid a fair wage for. There would be no hospital in the middle of the desert in Niger. There would be a heck of a lot more blind people in India. There would be fewer homes and assistance for children, soup kitchens for the homeless, recovery programs, Habitat for Humanity, scholarships for a whole slew of different groups, schools around the world, etc.
We’re not all bad.
The Westboro Baptist Church’s main objective is money. They protest at these emotional events, and most of the time, somebody infringes on their right to free speech, or physically assaults them. They sue (with the Phelps family Law Firm representation), they win lots of money, which gives them more money to travel and protest, rinse and repeat.
Fred Phelps knows exactly what he is doing, but I think he keeps his family in the dark about the scam. I feel pity for his children, who have blindly bought into his “message”, and I feel hopelessness, when I see his grandchildren carrying on the family tradition.
I repeat. It’s one of the reasons to avoid organized religions altogether. Brainwashings R Us.
That’s why, when I do go to church, I tend to sit and laugh to myself when the preacher goes on those anti-Harry Potter type rants and things like that. The worst part is, a good many of the churches in my area are so full-on racist, yet they can’t seem to see or care that they’re going against they’re own teachings. That’s my “stupid hicks” rant for the day.
Yep, one side of their mouth teaches Peace, love, forgiveness, etc, while the other asks the congregation to pray so that teh state legislature doesn’t pass the gay marriage law. Etc., etc., etc.
Wow. Who’s the one who has been brainwashed here? Perhaps if you had actually done some research into “organized religion” you would realize that the word relgion is anything that one does repetitively so your posts on this site could be considered an “oraganized religion” or am I wrong in assuming that you come on here every day? I’m not talking crap but I used to feel the same way you do and it got me nowhere.
I’ve said this before but I’ll say it once more… If I believe in Christ and I’m wrong then at least I’ve lived a decent life as a good person, if I don’t belive in Christ and I’m wrong then I’m screwed. I believe this idea was actually originated by Pascal. I stole it.
But I’m forgiven.
First, habit alone does not make something an organized religion. Second, Pascal’s wager fails when you incorporate all religions on earth – which god is the right one to believe in? Choose the wrong one and it’s just as bad as not choosing any.
And as much as I enjoy reading and commenting here, I really don’t feel it’s a spiritual experience. People don’t have to agree with me, I just mean that stock religions aren’t for everybody. I don’t feel there is a “right” one, and all in all, they fundamentally are the same.
In all the big rules, yes.
It’s the little things (like on what day to gather and do their little ceremonies – Saturday? Sunday? Friday?) that people tend to focus on to be unnecessarily divisive…
It’s kind of like how Red Sox fans loathe Yankees fans even though they both play the same game.
And by same game, you mean sit in chairs and yell at the field.
Or sit at home and yell at the TV.
Now I crave Nachos…
But not in bed, cuz that’s messy!
You are quite right madam. Still leaves me hungry. X_X
Maybe not all the big rules. I’m pretty sure a big rule of Mormonism (or whatever it’s called) is to believe you can ascend to become a god of your own world, Buddahism I’m not too clear on but I believe it focuses on transcendence, and Christianity you must believe in Christ. I think the basis of the different religons is quite different.
Also, just curious… why is it that everywhere you go, you hear people who hate Christians or are Christians, or people will scream “Oh, God” or some other blasphemies I won’t repeat including yelling out Messiah’s name… for people who don’t think that Jesus was consequential there are a lot of them that mention Him constantly. I don’t hear people yelling “Buddah damn it” or “John Smith” or “Mother Earth!”. Just an observation.
You are looking at dogma, not the underlying philosophies. The things they teach about HOW to live, are, in fact the same. See my earlier post where I explaied this with several examples. I don’t hate Christians. I just know that Christianity is not for me.
Also, the “oh god” bit has nothing to do with some mystical underlying truth. it has to do with the fact that western culture is filter through a judeo-christian construct. To put it more clearly, the ancient Church, changed the names of things on familiar everyday things, to make it more palatable to people as they converted them. It really was a pretty sneaky tactic. For instance, they moved the birth of christ to December, even though it likely happened in spring, to coincide with the people’s saturnalias in Mediterranean regions and Yuletide ones in the north. It’s a welcoming back of the SUN as in sunlight,; the beginning of the waxing daytime periods in the northern hemispheres. They replaced the sun with SON, (yes I know that’s anglicized, it really has to do with replacing one “light” with another) and slowly influenced the semantics. Very easy to convert people that way, at the same time replacing word usage. It’s an indoctrinated part of western culture as part of a false construct, nothing more.
True true. Good point. Thanks for the insight.
In bed…
re·li·gion /rɪˈlɪdʒən/ Pronunciation Key – Show Spelled Pronunciation[ri-lij-uhn] Pronunciation Key – Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects: the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion.
3. the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices: a world council of religions.
4. the life or state of a monk, nun, etc.: to enter religion.
5. the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith.
6. something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience: to make a religion of fighting prejudice.
7. religions, Archaic. religious rites.
8. Archaic. strict faithfulness; devotion: a religion to one’s vow.
You are only using the word religion in the sence or the expression “doing it religiously.” Not the same definition of religion.
I have studied different religions and hence included many examples about the teachings of several. Not to mention, I was raised catholic, went to catholic school, the whole nine.
I refuse to drag out that particular soapbox from under the dark recesses of my bed, but I could. The Catholic faith as a whole kind of creeps me out.
I guess it depends on which part creep you out. I am of the opinion though, That catholic school takes the Catholicism right out of you. There are so many hypocrisies and questionable philosophies I can’t even get started about. I more or less explained my worldview earlier anyway. No need to go in for individual sectarian nitpicks.
Being the Proddy in a Catholic school gave me plenty of time to contemplate these things while my classmates took communion.
… Hmph. They denied me Christ, and yet I have a strange fondness for them. Go figure.
LOL. Those nuns are dangerous for impressionable young girls. They try to make you want to be like them.
Anybody else horny?
I did wear a uniform, but only til I was like 11 or so. Jailbait for sure.
O_o
Great, now I’m going to hell since my brain added a couple years of body development to that image without changing other details. Lynn better be up for acting innocent tonight…
Depending on who you ask in here, you were going to hell anyway.
Bu.. Um… Erm… Howe… Ga…
-_-
Good point.
Cool. I wanted to post the definition but I didn’t have the time. I see what you’re saying about feeling that religion would nesecitate a belief system as well. I guess my example was poor. However, you could consider anything that someone would believe in (i.e. the Yankees are awesome) and sort of translate that into a ritualistic “religion, maybe? not that they would be right.
I’m glad I commented on your post. You are a smart lady and I like to see your input
Just don’t give up on God because “organized religion” is full of false prophets and hippocrates. That isn’t God but those who are still lost and pretending to be found.
It’s actually very cool if you watch the youtube documentary on them. EVERY SINGLE GIRL in their next generation that was interviewed was completely against ever dating, getting married, or having children. Of course, that probably won’t last, but here’s hoping!
It’s only a matter of time before he pickets the wrong funeral. Then some one will beat him to death and probably not even be arrested for it. Here’s hoping anyway. Ooh, and then, everybody else can picket his funeral. Nice! Karma FTW!!
Fred Phelps’ funeral is gonna be the biggest gay pride parade EVAR! Gay people will come from around the WORLD to picket it! It’ll be like Gay Woodstock!
I’m not gay, but personally, I can’t wait.
Not gay either, but yes indeed, that will be a great day to break out the ol’ assless chaps!
The LGBT community still sings songs about Jerry Falwell being dead;
I can’t imagine why Fred wouldn’t get the same treatment.
I still consider the greatest irony about the Internet to be the fact that millions of people spew homophobia on computers. Modern computer programming theories are based on the work of one Alan Turing, a homosexual.
hehe… irony ftw
I’m sorry, but I don’t see that this is much better than the dreck spewed by the far right churches.
Maybe if you’re not religious or if you’ve been the focus of hate speech, it’s ok to be hateful?
Never thought of that. Sweet!
Picket? No… Have a huge freak rave dance party? HELL YEAH!!
Happy heathen ?
Rolling Thunder has already counterdemonstrate Phelp’s Idiots, I believe. *That’s* something I’d like to see!
I would so beat the living crap out of some idiot if
they ever tried this at a funeral I was at.
(and I’m a skinny older chick…)
WWJD? Not picket funerals, I’m guessing.
Fred Phelps is one of those people who will make the world a better place when he dies. I thought the same thing about Falwell. Wastes of oxygen hiding behind religion to spread their hate.
Wow, aside from the pure hate emulating from that man in the middle, could you be any more rude at a funeral?
No. However, Andrew Jackson’s parrot had to be removed from his funeral for swearing.
Grammar nazi *emanating
I think that’s more Dictionary nazi than Grammar Nazi.
Fair enough, we need more titles anyway. You are correct.
Did somebody call for my wang?
Yep. That’s the rule.
My wang is here and ready for action. Full of vitamins and protein. Clears skin, elevates moods. My wang is multipurpose but does not appreciate being a towel hook.
not even when it’s elevated?
No there are other objectives when it is elevated. Towels are not one of them.
Why does it have anything to do with Nazis?
You missed the joke where I promised to discuss my wang whenever Nazis came up in conversation. You’ve now been educated. My wang has everything to do with Nazis NOW!!! BWAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!
World War 2 was caused by your penis?!??
I think it is worth fighting for.
DWN, you may or may not see this, but I just wanted to say, you make the posts here worth reading. Seriously. I had given up reading on this site, but the documentation of your torrid love affair with Guinny, the old battles with Evil Pundit (before he went clinically insane), and now your wang-based domination of Nazi discussion make perusing these comments worthwhile. Well done, sir. If you had a newsletter, I would subscribe to it.
*blush* I’m honored. Thank you. You made my evening. XD
I promise to continue using my wang to fight the evil of Godwin’s law.
I take partial credit for the Nazi rule LOL
Yes, your desire to talk about my wang made this all possible.
All of sudden… Im hungry for sausage.. Strange.
All of sudden… Im hungry for sausage.. Strange.
All of sudden I have a double post…. strange.
Doubly hungry for DWN’s sausage?
@ DWN — I am so proud to have been a part of this history.
In bed…
So if nazis summon your wang, should we call minerva146 a Grammar/ Dictionary Taliban instead?
If you want to ruin all my fun, yes.
I wish those were my kids. I’d be so proud!
Even better if the Hindu reincarnation stuff is right, he should come back as a homosexual person
.
I think he’ll come back as a homosexual fruit fly a few times first – he needs to re-evolve back to a human…
Ah man. I live in Topeka. Phred is downright evil. Unfortunately, his daughters, Shirley and Margie are taking over. Happy side note, though: a father of a soldier who’s funeral they picketed filed a lawsuit for slander and won. Looks like they’ll be losing all their funds and the compound itself to pay off the sentence.
It may take a few years but things are looking up.
Oh… that’s win.
Where can I find that story?
Yeah no kidding I live in Hutchinson and haven’t heard about that yet
It’s on wikipedia.
Here’s the intro:
On March 10, 2006 WBC picketed the funeral of Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder. On June 5, 2006 the Snyder family sued Fred Phelps, WBC, and unnamed others for defamation, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.[70] On 31 October 2007, WBC, Fred Phelps and his two daughters, Shirley Phelps-Roper and Rebecca Phelps-Davis, were found liable for invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress. A federal jury awarded Mr. Snyder $2.9 million in compensatory damages, then later added a decision to award $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and an additional $2 million for causing emotional distress (A total of $10,900,000).[71][72] The organization said it wouldn’t change its message because of the verdict.
Ok.. mark this day on your calendar… after reading that story, I once again believe in God.
I knew all it would take was a little good ‘ole Smiting. Keep it up Big Guy! We love you down here!
Point of fact. You can tell this is at a college, you can see the sign behind them. Actually from another board i am on, i think it is a college in upstate new york.
or it could be the entrance wall at a cemetery…. because this is the bastard who protests at funerals.
funny how those “signs” can be places other than colleges, isn’t it?!
I suppose, in a roundabout way, that fits with the previous “God makes hurricanes because of gays” preaching.
no, that’s because God hates trailer trash…
isn’t that why god made tornadoes?
No. He made tornadoes because God hates Sweden. Check it in the name.
Especially since Phelps is from Kansas…to bad he doesn’t stay there…Ahhh the American Taliban, where would we be without them?
God’s little Hoovers, heheheh…
Just the finger of God, wiping up a smudge.
Those kids are my heros! Absolutely brilliant!
The psycho in the middle is Fred Phelps, bane of Topeka, KS, disbarred lawyer, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church and noted protester at military funerals. George W. Bush passed a national law establishing a 150 ft. no picketing zone around funerals to try to corral this homophobe nut job. the saddest thing about Fred Phelps is he gets his grandkids to protest with him. God bless those pro-American, heart of the U.S. red states, eh?
The problem isn’t really the red states themselves… it’s *some* (I know plenty of repubs who are open-minded, tolerant, GOOD people) of the people who live in them and think stuff like this is okay.
The real issue is, legally, we can’t stop them. We can restrict them (as Bush tried to do with his radius, one of the few things he’s done that I approve of) but we can;t stop them. If we censor one, we have to censor all, and that’s too damn close to rescinding freedom of speech all together for anyone to want to touch it.
What frosts my buttons is that if this walking mistake had stuck to being hateful only to gay people & their families, Bush wouldn’t have given two turds about the issue.
Ya, gays are fair game but touch his war and you get your hand slapped.
Haha this makes me so proud to be gay. At school on the day of silence, we had kids protesting and calling it the day of truth. I made it a point to look like fricking Rainbow Bright and was extra affectionate with my girl that day. I <3 these people.
Okay… so I had a really long reply to your comment, but I think WordPress ate it.
Anyway, the short version is, even as a Christian who follows God’s word, I can;t stand crap like this. The men who wrote the Bible knew we would have to see it as the infallible Word of God, so they slipped a few gems of their own in there, is my opinion.
Why else would we have a religious text that says love thy neighbor… but it’s okay to hate someone if they’re gay, to sell your daughter into slavery to cover your debts, stone someone to death for working on a Sunday, AND confine all the women in your home to isolation while they’re having their periods so as not to ‘taint’ anyone with the blood of sin?
Until a reputable scientist goes public with evidence that gay is NOT genetic to refute the evidence we have that it IS, I call bullshit on the whole Phelps brigade.
Sorry this isn’t a total response to everything you said, but I had to let you know that it wasn’t Sunday, it was the sabbath day. The sabbath is sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. It never was and never will be Sunday. Not that it makes it any better to kill over it, but that’s what it is.
Oh… well then. Thanks for the clarification.
The rest of my point still stands though, and hopefully my mistake wont detract from that.
I’m also going to comment on the menstrual hut concept. During those days, women that usually worked like dogs were not required to cook, clean, or so anything for that matter. It gave them some rest time, and as most women would have the same cycle (due to close living arrangements) it was a very social time. In addition, the number of periods a woman would have would be very limited. Often periods did not return until weaning was beginning, so perhaps two or three periods every 2-4 years or so?
And, Jess, you’re missing the point about all of those things you mentioned in your post. All of that is Old Testament stuff that deals with cultural norms of the day. As someone wiser than I pointed out earlier in these threads, the Bible undergoes an ‘evolution’ as you read through it where these uncivilized ‘goatherders’ turn into functioning members of a new type of society. A lot of the small rules that were handed down were never meant to be followed after a certain amount of time. As long as you have the Big Ten, the rest is just details.
And the Bible never says it’s ok to hate someone for being gay. Where did you get that?
I agree with froofrou. And on the period thing, I read leviticus 15 this morning to be sure, but my take on it is this: it was more of a health & cleanliness issue. They were out in the desert & didn’t have tampons & maxi pads as we do today, so their blood could get on everything, such as their beds, etc. The commandment about that was just to not get on the stuff she was sitting on if you did go around her & don’t touch any of it because then you’d have to go take a shower & clean whatever was touched or something.
Hate to be an A-hole, but I’m studying to be a sexuality therapist. There actually have been studies corrolating homosexuality to genetics, a la 2004. Something like if one male twin was gay, there was a 52% chance that his twin was gay too, and in fraternal twins a 34% chance, or some nonsense. Also, part of the brain (around the amygdala?) was larger in homosexual people – Now, whether or not this caused homosexuality or homosexuality causes it has gone unproven.
Sorry for the ridiculously vague post. It was something we studied in class. My book is “Discovering Psychology, Fourth Edition” by Hockingbury and Hockingbury
“I made it a point to look like fricking Rainbow Bright and was extra affectionate with my girl that day.”
That’s so gay.
So EXCELLENTLY gay!
Very gay but with women, I am still a perv and demand camera footage.
oh my god. I never knew about this guy! After reading wikipedia ’bout him, I swear:
If I’m ever going to america, seeing this guy, I’ll kill him. No matter what punishment I’ll get. He’s going to die.
That’s the way, I looked at his wiki and began plotting how to get a barrett within range of one of his pickets and how to destroy all the evidence (so far the best i can come up with is thermiting the barrel and fireing pin on site or even the whole damn thing) in all likely hood i’ll never do it but if the opportunity arises i’ll have a plan.
Note to self: Dont be a bigoted ass around Harold the Sage…
Or around froofrou. Or she will spank you mightily and with great vengence!
*contemplates*
Froofrou now you’re just encouraging the bigoted-ness. Give us incentive NOT
be that way, dear.
Um……….taser?
-
Oooh! I know! I’ll tell EP where you live!
Yes… well…
*back up slowly…*
I.. um…
FACK OFF!
*retreats and jumps out the window*
The Phelps clan of inbred, judgmental psychos came to our state. We counterdemonstrated them right outta here, and we’ll do it again! It was funnier than heck!
OMG someone should give him AIDS
Good luck finding volunteers…

I suspect you’re right about Phelps true motivation. What a sick sick man!
Yeppers, this is one of my home state’s residents. I really wish the press would ignore that lunatic bunch. They live for the notoriety. And, please, do NOT refer to his sect as a ‘church’. Under no stretch of the imagination could they be considered Christian, nor part any other true faith. I’ve seen photos of his grandchildren stomping on the US flag in some of their ‘protests’ so they are being raised to be as hateful as their grandfather and their parents. Wonder if they will all stay that hateful as they ‘mature?’
These two boys are very creative and I love this photo. More of this type of ridicule would do more to take away Phred’s impact than retaliation. Oh, and the Rolling Thunder presence at funerals is awesome.
“These two boys are very creative and I love this photo. More of this type of ridicule would do more to take away Phred’s impact than retaliation.”
I agree.
Well, this is going to be a boring comment read…Evil Pundit probably wouldn’t even argue against this one. I hope.
Don’t poke trolls
Better to stab.
No use one of these http://www.anzioironworks.com/MAG-FED-20MM-RIFLE.htm
I think I’m in love. =)
Oddly enough, this lol reminded me of the article I read last night about White Supremacy groups getting more members from the economy. I do hate how groups religious or otherwise tend to form around their own inner weakness while focusing on another group to hate and blame for their own troubles.
The root cause is a hierarchical world view, seeing everything as fitting into a universally valid, external heirarchy. Human nature has an inherent hierarchical mode, but it also has an egalitarian mode. When resources are plentiful, baring social factors humans are usually egalitarian, because it is most efficient. When resources are scarce, humans are generally hierarchical because that is most efficient.
–
A good illustration of this is the difference between regular and pygmy chimps (Bonobos.) Regular chimps live in a resource poor environment and are hierarchical. Bonobos live in a resource rich environment and are egalitarian. They also reduce social tensions through copious and inventive sex.
–
Unfortunately, human society is more like regular chimps. According to one theory, the hierarchical mode of thinking became locked into society when we developed agriculture, created a surplus, then lost it in the huge climatic change when Northern Africa turned into a desert. This is why you don’t find walled cities or mass graves before about 4,000 BC. We didn’t wage war before that point. But when you have a whole generation of PTSD parents raising a whole generation of myelin deficient kids, you get famine mode locked into your culture for millennium.
Are you SERIOUSLY comparing this to bonobos?
Actually he was comparing this to chimps, not bonobos.
Are you SERIOUSLY that bad at reading comprehension? I’m using Bonobos and Chimps as an example of resource dependent social modes. Bonobos are egalitarian, Chimps are hierarchical.
I believe he was using examples and science (anthropology) to back up his responses. Are you seriously that stupid not to understand how that works?
Stupid, ignorant, blindly religious…but in any case, the answer to your question is probably “yes.”
I’ll paraphrase it for you: Freaked out parents making retarded babies = generations of freaked out retards until the end of time. Got it?
that was taken at vanderbilt university in nashville…

This guy is giving all Christians a bad name. No one everyone thinks we’re crazy nut jobs. The bible is about loving other people, love the sinner hate the sin doesn’t mean picket a funeral. When Jesus went to funerals he either raised the dead or mourned with the family. Epic wacko Christian fail.
He has protested at my highschool many many times. I go to school in hippie loving Lawrence and so he loves to hate us
He protested when we did the Laramie Project and at my Senior Graduation.
he needs a life
you know what? Sometimes I really get discouraged seeing pictures like this because it reminds me that there are so many narrow minded people out there….. but then reading everyone’s comments reminds me that there are even MORE open minded, intelligent, wonderful individuals- with AWESOME senses of humor.
Open minded younger generation for the win.
Hey…who says we’re all young here?? (Although I AM younger than my parents’ generation, natch..
)
Looks like Harry and Dudley can finally work together on something.
Good one!
The hatemonger doth protest too much, methinks.
The biggest homophobes are the self hating gays in denial.
ITA
this guy is from Westboro Baptist Church
I hate it when I see other Christians do shit like this
LOL. I was reading Phelps’ Wikipedia and found a website by him called godhatessweeden.com. So I clicked on it to try and read more about it, and got this:
Your organization’s Internet use policy restricts access to this web page at this time.
Reason:
The Websense category “Racism and Hate” is filtered.
LOL Just goes to show you that even the internet thinks he’s a racist biggot.
Yeah, the reason God hates Sweden is because apparently Sweden jailed (somehow punished) a priest for talking smack about gays, like the Phelps family does. So what was their first plan of action? They went to a local hardware store where Swedish vacuums were sold and stood outside and protested.
See Seth’s post on chimps and bonobos for a proper insult.
oh!
I know those guys!
Are they as awesome as this post would make them appear?
Would you tell them thanks for me? (Assuming you mean the funny ones, not the %#^%$^$ in the middle!)
That’s not funny at all.
You’re right. I believe it qualifies as ‘hilarious’.
Not quite… “F*cking hilarious” is more accurate. And I open this thread up to more corrections of the state of funny.
“Fabulous” as well… someone had to say it.
Wow- Liberal hate fest !
Um…if the gent in the center had a political leaning it would definitely be conservative…
Paladin…
That is how it is spelled. Oh and Phelps is a conservative. That is all.
Nope, sorry. You are new here so you don’t recognize the regulars, but trust me, the PunditKitchen conservatives are hating on this guy just as much as we liberals. Even the Christians are hating on this fool. I’m the one lone liberal voice that piped up and said, “Hate doesn’t work. Try love and forgiveness.” So, ah, how to put this? You lose.
In bed… With Phelps and family…
OMG, that burned my mind’s eye!!!
Try having the indelible association of “Phelps” to “Feltch” in your head.
Oh, wait, now you do, too.
*offers brainbleach*
*applies liberally*
Brainbleach? Liberal?
Lib’rul Brainwashing! OMG!
That’s Fred Phelps in the picture.
(And I can’t wait to dance on his grave!)
Dear Phelps,
I don’t know what you hope to accomplish, but hate begets only hate.
Just in case they look–I would be proud to be the mother of the ones on either end. That is genius in action.
I think the best thing to do, rather than be violent, is get him drunk then plant evidence (perhaps including well-photoshopped pictures) to convince him that he’s not walking the straight and narrow himself. I doubt he’d ever mention the word again
That reminds me of the movie Can’t Hardly Wait when the nerd boys thought of the prank to play on the jock at the graduation party. That was hilarious.
That’s Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas.
SERIOUS wingnut, protests at funerals of servicemembers killed in Iraq.
He’s an attention whore; what do you expect?
Yep, this was in front of Vanderbilt in 2002. The guy on the left is named Russ…I cannot remember the name of the guy on the right. If I remember correctly, both were freshman and engineering majors. They were actually part of a large group of students who f*cked with the Westboro Baptist people when they dared to come to Nashville. There are more pictures somewhere on the internet (I was there…and remember). I was a sophomore at the time and remember sitting outside McGill Hall and looking at all of the pictures. Good times.
Well the, Russ and Whatshisname get honorary drinks!
Thanks for pointing out that despite his claims, this guy is so far from Christian it is scary. Also thanks for mentioned Rolling Thunder (for those that don’t know, they are a group of bikers that ride in a circle around these funerals so that the sounds of the Phelps group can’t be heard inside, and those not on the bikes, stand in a blockade holding American flags.) These nuts believe that God is killing American Soldiers because America had gay rights. In fact, to one of the mothers of one of these dead soldiers he responded, “It’s your own fault you maudlin woman.”
Wow. Thanks for the explanation of what Rolling Thunder are. It just restored _some_ of my faith in humanity. Excellent stuff.
Is that Christopher Walken holding the signs?
Maybe this should be filed under LolCelebs.
Do not defame Chris Walken! (Or he’ll stab you in the eye with a soldering iron)
In the face actually….
But do NOT compare my lord and savior to that… Phelps thing. Walken studied dance at Juliard… which I can assure you NO homophobe makes it out of Juliard without being cured.
That explains that bizzare Fatboy Slim video with Walken dancing around in it. I freaking LOVE that video, but it’s weird
Weapon of Choice. Awesome video.
Indeed. I have a off screen recording of Walken singing “Mack The Knife” in yiddish during one of his movie projects. It was CLASSIC.
What’s with all that homophobia anyway?
and all that racism against muslim?
What’s wrong with that country? :’(
Fortunately not all American’s think that way. Unfortunately, these sometimes are the ones that talk the loudest and therefore create the “ugly American” image and ruin it for the rest of us.
You don’t need the Bible to justify love, but it is the most widely used reason to jusitify hate.
Rev.Phelps protested in our NY town once when our mayor and his boyfriend tried to get married. It was crazazy. The Phelps clan called ahead to the churches in the area (we have at least 10 in our town) looking for a place to stay/ set up camp. Every single church turned them down. Then the churches got together and held a prayer and song service that talked about Unity and acceptance and what it meant to be Christian. There were police on horses everywhere. The signs they were holding were flippin’ awful – even the kids. It was really a sight to see. We ran ‘em out of town.
Good work there. As people have said, violence shouldn’t be used to get rid of ideologies. There’s a line in a Marquis de Sade book (who actually has some kind good philosophy in it) that you should destroy this sort of thing by educating people, and pointing out the flaws. He also gave an example of how violence doesn’t work when trying to remove a religion. His example? Christianity. Persecuted to hell by the Romans, came back all the stronger, and look where it is today.
With that sort of precedent, please, nobody use violence on this guy!
But but… My beating stick is all ready and everything! -_-
you guys should read this godhateshomophobes.com/homphelps.php
It ain’t just Westboro, many faiths have various levels of offensive beliefs
my beloved aunt died Friday night.
the funeral was a nightmare. She went to a very traditional Catholic church when she was here in town–women were requested to where skirts and head coverings (no I’m not kidding) and masses were spoken in Latin.
So, during the mass, the priest goes on to explain about the black vestments and black pall (as opposed to white in most Catholic churches), the lack of flowers, and the service with him facing the altar, not the congregants. Which led to him denouncing Vatican II and how it “destroyed the Catholic church’ and how the worst thing Pope John Paul II did was have a meeting with leaders from all the world religions to pray for world peace beacuse there is ONE TRUE GOD AND THAT IS THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY and on and on and on.
Is this appropriate for a FUNERAL?! Yes, It may be his belief, and may have been my aunts, but a funeral, when there is BOUND to be those of mixed faiths is NOT the time to get politico-religious.
THEN he went on to say that my aunt’s soul needs our prayers because she may be “burning in purgatory” despite being a “wonderful person who offered up her suffering to Christ” (which is true). THIS I can ALMOST deal with; it was more the way he worded it that offended and upset me. My brother, his finacee, and my cousin were all upset too. I haven’t talked to anyone else yet…
I was, and still am offended and disgusted, frankly. What should have been, in my opinion, a last loving ceremony for my aunt turned into something that had me ready to walk out of the service in tears (for a reason other than she was dead).
I know there are probably some who will agree with some (maybe all) of what was said, and that’s fine, it’s your belief, I just disagree mainly with the denouncing of Pope John Paul the II and Vatican II and so on during a funeral ceremony…
Wow. That must have been unimaginably traumatic. I feel for you, and your family. Seems like you all need to arrange some other memorial service, without the priest, to allow you to mourn for her more appropriately.
.
(I recommend noodles and beer be served, but that’s just me.)
Hmmm, noodles and beer work. Maybe vodka
The priest. He requires a beating for failing at condolences.
Yes. In lieu of that, he’s getting a formal complaint mailed to the local Bishop.
Woot
I’m so sorry that your family had to endure something like that. It was highly inappropriate. If he really felt that way, he should’ve had a sermon on a different day for that.
BTW, the bible doesn’t teach anything about purgatory. I hate when people are meant to feel like a loved one is suffering when they die. When someone dies, it’s like a sleep. Your aunt, having given her life to Christ will hear Jesus’ voice when he returns for his people. Her next thought will be excitement from hearing his voice telling her to wake up and travel home.
I know very little about the Bible, so idk anything about purgatory, but I DO know that it seems incongruent with a ‘loving and merciful’ God.
wow O_o
personally im not religious, but thats so not cool.
i’d be pissed.
All three are hate mongering idiots.
Him and his grandkids?
Geez, read the wikipedia article about this guy – He is a damn SICKO. Really. His views on about everything are just disgusting, and the bunch of http://www.godhates.com websites makes him just a parody of sick fundamentalists. I’m disgusted. -.-
god hates XXX.com , i meant to say. Bad internet, changing my posts! IT’s sites like godhatessweden.com or godhatesireland.com or..whatever. Just look at the wikipedia entry.
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/michael_haggerty/expose3.htm
If you have lots of free time and want to get REALLY outraged – read this. It’s the entire text of a book that a journalist wrote about Phelps, but was withdrawn by the publisher when Phelps et al filed a lawsuit against them. But, because the text of the book had been admitted to evidence as part of a lawsuit, it is out there!
is that brother micah who tours campuses all over the country?
Micah isn’t that bad…. he just goes to colleges. Not funerals.
I just say you ask the bastard why and give him straight up facts to show him how wrong he is…
bagnew’s right. Reason bounces off these people like quarters off Solid Snake’s firm buttocks.
I have this fantasy where God (or someone playing him, via a bright spotlight and good speakers) comes down to this hatemongering shit stain and personally tells him to pull his head from his ass. But the sad fact is that it’d have no effect because, well…come on, this guy doesn’t believe in God. He’s just a sociopath who likes to watch people suffer; it’s how he gets his dick hard. Why focus the hate on gays? Because they’re vulnerable — he’s a sociopath, he’s looking for an easy target. Same reason he goes after veterans’ families — great tragedy equals great opportunity to inflict pain on others. He’s not concerned with what the Bible says – just how he can get off one more time, how he can feel like a “big man” for a change.
You should read his son’s account of growing up in the house — the guy basically starved his children, forced them to run miles every day, and had them robbing houses. His deal has nothing to do with “Jesus” or even homosexuality — he’s just sociopathic and too weak to do anything about it (i.e. become a serial killer, like most people with his condition). So he’s just pathetic, and it’s really too bad that there’s no hell for him to rot in.
I do look forward, though, to his funeral. Because the sad reality is that when this used-tampon-storage-vessel dies, no one — not even his own family — will be sad.
You know, people like this guy are the reason I hate Christians. And while he probably only uses God to act like he can be superior, I would still like to walk into whatever church they use as their headquarters with a rifle and just start firing. Then again, that would be in a world where justified killing, or killing for the benefit of humanity, is allowed. Otherwise I’ll just hope i can set people on fire with my mind
And yes i realize violence isn’t really going to make a difference, but it’s good for getting rid of anger
Anyone know the names of the Vandy pranksters or how to contact them? I would just like to personally thank them for sticking it to this worthless piece of shit in their own, wonderful way.
I was acquainted with one of them and passed along a link and your thank you.
“Not today, Fred.”
I’ll verify the previous commenter – this photo is from Vanderbilt University, spring 2003. Fred Phelps was on his second protest trip to Nashville that year (the first, at the Nashville City Council, drew a large counter-protest of university students). This photo was originally run in the Slant, the student humor publication.
More like they FAIL.
They are implying a possessive statement with he’s and should have made the shirt say “he is” instead. I highly doubt the man in the center possesses gay and the sentence “He’s gay” doesn’t make any sense no matter how you look at it.
They didn’t win, they failed with a lack of basic English.
The use of the apostrophe causes this to be either ‘he is’ or ‘belongs to him’ depending on the context. It’s gramatically correct.
-throws a 3rd Grade Grammar Book at Some Computer Nerd’s head and then closes her fridge door again-
I believe this is classified as a nice, juicy Christianity Fail Prank Win Grammar Fail FAIL with tater tots and a Dr Pepper on the side.
Yes… … we must do it again! XD I’ll bring the shirts! <3
bahaha ^___^
ftw
GO, NERDS, GO! the guy in the middle needs to be put in mental institute cuz he’s crazy. Like i always say, violence is not the answer, but hummiliation is! WIN!!! hahaha hate mongering bastard
Andrew? Is that you?
one word: SWEET!
also the old man needs to learn to write properly!
I generally don’t like making comments like this, but this guy really.. angered me. I can’t wait for him to die and find out that he’s not going up to sit next to a white, male god with a beard and white robe. He’s going down…in a big way. I don’t think God would laugh at someone’s death, but if God was going to laugh at anyone dying, it’s people like that who think that they’re doing God’s will and persecuting people.
You don’t read the bible in so far as what’s there, do you, more what you’re told it meant. Old Phelps may be a wife beating, child abusing SOB, but it’s pretty much biblical.
And I’d not put a shilling on the idea of retribution for evils done after death. Gods come and go… one time they KNEW that Asar (Osiris) was real, and for a lot longer than the paltry 2000 years of Christian thought, or the 3000 years of Jewish…
So, I’d not get my hopes up with some sort of wet dream that Phelps will ‘get his’, unless he’s strapped down as E-wing Entertainment some time…
(This will become a double post… I don’t care)
Oh my GOD how old are they?! I need to score me a date with one of them- BOTH of them… forever.
Can you imagine the giant demonstrations at his funeral when this f*ckwit finally dies?
If we get rid of all these people then we would have a perfect world!
Let the Genocide begin with Limbaugh!
Oh look, it’s a bigot. Yes, Nihil, I’m talking about you/
Wow, that’s not even funny. In fact, it’s actually insulting and misleading.
So STFU
Ya, anything deemed sexually deviant by fundies (99.9% of sexual acts, amirite?) would work, really.
That really depends on WHICH fundies you talk to. The practices I personally have would make a lot of anti-fundies blush.
But that’s another post.
I am thinking wine enemas and ball gags with lots of strikes with a single tail. I will have to make a barb wire whip…
I know froofrou, most of your posts here are “tee-hee SEX tee-hee!” anyway.
That is suspiciously like a dig and I am going to assume you aren’t making a dig at the lovely lady here… *quirks eyebrow*
*saunters behind ck, just in case*
@ck: I find that characterization inaccurate and offensive. Froufrou has demonstrated her ability to debate with style, thoughtfulness, and a polite attitude. The fact that she is open about her sexuality is just a plus, it doesn’t define her. I may not agree with her, but I respect her. I’ve learned that on PunidtKitchen, it pays to pick your battles, and it doesn’t pay to alienate the thoughtful and polite people.
Hey, I call it like I see it. Nice to see all the guys coming to the defense of the little lady though!
We stand up for thoughtful and polite people of all genders and political affiliations. There are plenty of real wing nuts here when you feeel the need to lay the smack-down on someone. If you think herb, DWN and I don’t like laying the smack-down when it’s called for, you haven’t been paying attention.
–
And just to be clear, I think you are being a hypocrite. Saying “Ya, anything deemed sexually deviant by fundies (99.9% of sexual acts, amirite?)” and then calling out froofrou for being open about her sexuality is hypocrisy.
*overcome with emotion*
Thanks you guys! I love you too!
In bed, I assume?
(Ready the camera, Max!)
Freakin.. Warn me guys! I need the “wide angle” zoom lense!
I would just like to say that even though froofrou and I have had our spats.
I will not let that get in the way of my respect for her, and wanting to make passionate love to her backside while I wear my santa outfit, as we do The
Electric Slide……
Aw crap… I said that last part out loud didnt I?
….in bed
I’ll agree with everything you said, Max dear, up until the part about passionate love to my backside. That is reserved for on person only, hehehe. And he generally doesn’t wear a santa suit, but he does like it when I wear the school girl outfit
But the electric slide… cmon.. you GOTTA do the electric slide.
Mmmm, school girl outfits… Nummy.
*polite bow*
