Who doesn’t?
I had to go to Wikipedia to check this out, and what do you know, Colonel-in-chief of the Norwegian King’s Guard. Seriously? How the hell did that happen?
The Norwegian royal guard choosed a penguin from Edinburgh zoo as their official mascot in 1972 and gave him a military rank (of course) and the name Nils Olav (Nils after the officer who had the idea, and Olav after the Norwegian king at the time). The rank and position as mascot has then been transfered to a new penguin when the old one died.
The one on the picture is the 3rd generation mascot, and was given knighthood in August 2008. Why I do not know. But the military has always loved medals and parades.
Fun story though.

Not a Simpsons fan? Linguo was the grammar robot invented by Lisa Simpson for (?), iirc, a science fair at her school. Eventually, being surrounded by bad grammar caused Linguo to overload and shut down.
Oh my, how embarrassing. Yes, I AM a Simpson fan, and yes I HAVE seen that episode. More than once, in fact. For some reason (dementia/stupidity/) I just did not recognise it at all.

Edinburgh zoo is famous for its penguins.(its logo is a penguin) Anyhoo, at some time or other, the king’s guard was in Edinburgh. They all went to see the famed creatures and they loved them so much that they adopted one, gave it a name and adopted another Nils Olav when the first died. This picture was all over the BBC a while ago because, after being promoted several times, King Harald the 5th decided to have the birdie knighted. Apparently knighting a penguin “strengthens” the links between Norway and Scotland…..
Or some crap along those lines.

But loose from that, it doesn’t make any sense, penguins don’t live on the arctic (wich is where Norway is closest to).
The penguin lives in a zoo, there are lots of penguins in zoos all around the world. This one just happens to be responsible for the King of Norway’s safety.

9 years ago I spent a year in the service of His Majesty The King’s Guard as a regular guard soldier (as opposed to the soldiers in this picture, who are in the drill platoon). However I never heard of this Nils-Olav until now.
