  1. audrey says:

That’s the law of inertia, right?

    • phil says:

for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
dude is about to have a bad day.

    • Guinny says:

      Action and reaction.

      *imagines*

      *snickers*

      • Seth says:

That little boat is displacing three to four hundred pounds of water. To move it, you need to move that much water out of the way. You also need to accelerate three to four hundred pounds of boat, man, and gun. Also, this is a recoil operated gun, so some of the force of recoil is going to operate the mechanism.

Rough off the cuff calculations: this looks like an M2 Browning. Let’s assume it’s a model that fires around 500 rounds per minute, and lets assume it uses the 45 gram bullet. On full auto, that bad boy could accelerate 22.5 kilos of metal up to nearly 3,000 feet per second, every second. So right off the bat, we can see he doesn’t have more than a few seconds worth of ammunition in that boat.

The Browning accelerates each slug with a force of about 13.35 ft/lbs of force. On full auto, this amounts to 6,675 foot/pounds per second. Or about 12 horsepower. That little motor is almost certainly enough to hold position, especially given the fact that there can’t be more than a few seconds worth of ammo in that boat.

There are many variants of the M2 Browning, some fire faster, and there are many kinds of ammunition, some weigh more. But not considerably faster, and not considerably heavier. So no matter what combination we have here, we will not get a comical ‘scooting backwards across the water’ effect. Sorry. These calculations also lend credence to the pic, as it really isn’t as ludicrous a set-up as one might suppose.

        • jules says:

Yeah, I’m sure the coast guard has *some* idea of how the laws of physics work in water
          amusing though

        • Seth says:

Argh, I mixed up minutes and seconds, so that horsepower estimate is too high by a factor of 60! Boat isn’t going anywhere.

        • Schmoe says:

Ahh, the science of violence. (I stopped being fascinated by the machine gun when I realized 1. bullets are hot when discharged and2. they hurt a whole lot more and cause a lot more bleeding than in those old John Wayne movies. I still like those4 old movies, though.)

        • Mandy says:

Wow, you really killed that one….

        • Dave says:

Dude, you are a buzzkill. Seriously, Seth, don’t be a dick.

        • shenanigans says:

You just pissed on *everyone’s* proverbial parade.

        • Dude says:

way to be a dick seth

          Gratz you’re smart?

          • ch1 says:

okay seriously you guys….have you ever heard of dry humor?
seth was actually funnier than anyone else on here. just the fact that
he took the time to figure out all that shit makes it funny. if everyone
was in the same room looking at that picture and seth just started
babling on about how it wouldnt work then everyone would laugh because
it was funny. so shutup! if you dont like a comment then dont comment on
it duh. most of the time it just makes the person (seth) want to do it more
often so then you guys will just keep getting funny comments from him and
not like it.sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo shut the hell up.
no thank you. have a shitty day

        • Jedi says:

Seth, you are wrong. The little boat is not going to stay deep in water, but will thrust to the surface. (gonna get “on top” of the water), so yeah, a backfire might still be possible, since its wight is very much biased to the front.

    • Tribble says:

Aww, they should have taped it and put it on FAIL Blog!

      • jbaer says:

Sorry to disappoint but you won’t ever see it fire.. it’s a fake pic. I see several flaws in the validity of the photo. It’s probably someone’s clever photo shop skills at work. I’ll admit.. it’s quite good.. had everyone else fooled.

  2. eddiepscetti says:

Those Coasties.. always wanting to be Special Ops kind of people.

  3. Dan says:

His motor is smaller than his gun

  4. fuzzy_dragon says:

talk about a gunship on a budget! yikes!!

  5. Rvo says:

This is probably a horrible idea, but I’m going to necromance a thread…

Ema and someone else were having a discussion about the existence of haves and have nots. You will find that in the regular Downsian model (Economic Model of Democracy, by Anthony Downs), the wealthy will always be preferred as voters over the poor because they have more resources at their disposal to become “agitators,” or those who use resources to persuade others.

Monetary equality tends to lead to political equality. Disparity in wealth leads to disparity in influence. It’s not a one to one ratio, but it certainly exists.

  6. ppg says:

It’s not the size of your boat, it’s the motion of — no.. no, it IS the size of your boat. Sorry.

  7. Wolfram says:

that just doesn’t look right …

  8. Bee says:

In Soviet Russia, the reaction comes first (dunno what that would be, though).

  9. Maxwell Silverhammer says:

I just wanna see him fire it… just once. Pleeeease!?

  10. Koki Kariya says:

A clever joke on Pundit Kitchen? Seems out of place.

  11. SeaBee says:

    Oh good grief!
I would part with cash to see him firing that!
    Click!
    BANG!
    “Sssssssssshhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttttttttt!!”

  12. CGI-Bin says:

Lets hope he is in the northern hemisphere. I hear that the law is opposite in the south.

  13. Neelix says:

shouldn’t it be the 2nd law of newton?

  14. Helga says:

If he just fired it the other way, he wouldn’t need that motor! Now there’s a green solution!

  15. Evo7 says:

Proof of Murphy’s Law in 3…2…1…

  16. Oldun says:

The reaction wouldn’t be that bad. The M2 is pretty heavy. If he was firing it straight forward, I bet it would go just fine, but if he fired it off to the side, he’d flip for sure. Either way, it would be fun to observe it first hand to see how it goes.

  17. Ted says:

Didn’t Tubbs drive on of those in an episode of Miami Vice?

  18. Julian says:

I hate to ruin everyone’s fun, but there is not enough force from the gun to propel the boat backwards more than maybe 10 mph. It will move, probably even overpower the motor, but it takes a lot of force to push something through water, so the gun would probably not be much more impressive than a regular motor.

  19. bogie says:

    Ever shoot a .50? They’ll do some thumpin’…

Overall, I think the picture is funny, and fairly valid… but the real limitation you have there is weight… That gun weighs in pretty good. And you’re not going to have a great deal of excess capacity for ammo.

I talked to the guy who takes the dogfood can cannon to Knob Creek – he says he gets very few tailgaters, once they realize what they’re looking at.

    • Trainwreck Chaser says:

What the hell did you say in the last paragraph?

      • theperson10 says:

that some guy he knows has a cannon which can launch dogfood cans, and tailgaters avoid him because of it?

        • cobrajoe says:

Only because of the way it’s transported. I’ve seen a gatling gun replica on wheels in the back of a truck with it’s barrels pointed backwards. He didn’t get any tailgaters either.

  20. Reno says:

Very clever. I almost choked on my coffee.

  21. Wholesome says:

    HAHAHA!!! That is awesome!

  22. Codswallop says:

Who’s in the picture? Wow! I always wondered what became of Mike Dukakis.

  23. Chris says:

My computation is different (22.5 kg fired in one second):

velocity of boat = velocity of bullets * mass of bullets / mass of complete boat

    135 pfs = 3000 fps * 22.5 kg / 500 kg

  24. gnep says:

that guy is gonna win a darwin award. lol

  25. whitebread64 says:

Seth is an overanalytical pompous prick

  26. Brian says:

This is all just a cover up for the fact that the man operating the boat has no left hand.

  27. Terry Wagar says:

Eric Carlson and Joan Wagar, A,K,A, Doubleclick and Mrs Dash,( yes those are there nicknames they gave each other.) admitted to poisoning me while I was a plasma donor back in 2005.
Eric Carlson pedofied me behind prison walls and then framed me as a pedophile on march 26th 2007, I caught the crime on a audio recorder I put in Joan’s purse.
there were people in authority helping them with this and nobody in authority will help they pretend nothing happened and refuse to investigate this.
Eric Carlson changed his hair color and his name but this is not hidden, only ignored by the authority’s and media
I’m disabled from being poisoned and the hospitals refuse to admit I’m poisoned.
My Family is in danger from these people and I have no other recorse but to make these charges public.
My name is Terry Wagar,Im from Portland Oregon and I’m backing up these charges.
I have been threatened with harassment charges by a Sargent Walker, She is a portland police officer stationed at the OHSU hospital, for the non crime of reporting a multi murder conspiracy within that hospital.
They don’t give a s4!t Joan and Eric was poisoning a plasma donor!
Why don’t you give A s4!t Portland Authority’s, its already reported.
Where did Mrs Dash keep her stash?
In A garlic salt shaker, nuff said!
