No, I don’t think it has been noted as very big deal “over here” either, but it has certainly been one of the few things that has come across. Just about when I had the feeling that the reporting about the different candidates was starting to get interesting here though, Palin happened.

I don’t claim to be very up-to-date or knowledgable about the American elections, I try to catch a fact or two when I can, but as far as I am aware, McCain’s age has been reported as a factor, positive and/or negative. In fact, McCain being a fairly old dude is one of the few things I knew about him without checking it up further on my own. So I wouldn’t consider my chuckling at this lol being all about ageism.

i didn’t take it to mean that miner thought joe the plumber represented himself accurately… just that he wasn’t imaginary.

Yes, I think that age is definitely a factor in what makes this caption work. Well, it is for me, anyway. But, I don’t know if would think it is a big issue. Age is (and mark well that I am not American, and to add to that has mostly followed the election via radio) one of the more obvious characteristics of McCain. I am sure he has many other qualities as well, but age is certainly up there in the top of what the discussions about him as a candidate center around. In my world, that is.

Is it fair? Is that relevant? Isn’t humour very often based on not being fair, nice or correct?

What makes this funny (I am now of course only relating to the way my sense of humour works), is that you quite easily realise that he’s waving to someone on the other side of the window, the fact that he has not appeared to be daft, and the fact that the is old enough that senility could potentially start being an issue in not all too distant a future.

1. No matter the lol content, someone makes a comment that rubs one party
the wrong way
2. Snide comments and “clever debate” ensue.
3. Actual agreement between the two sides of the isle happens
4. …. In bed
5. Random troll interjects an inflammatory comment
6. “Clever debate” re-ensues, this time with condescending remarks made on
both sides
7. Someone mentions nazis which leads to DWN’s wang.
8. Both sides after a good 10-15 posts decides to agree to disagree, kiss and make up
9. The post degenerates into innuendo and movie references, and good times
are had by all.

So you see, TWC… to the regulars, PK is still a place for good, healthy, debate,
and in the end a little promiscuity, and good wholesome… dirty, dirty fun.

No, I completely agree TwC. It’s not comedy, satire, or even an observation. John McCain hasn’t proven himself to be childish or unintelligent. If this was a picture of President Bush, it would make sense. It would be trite and little more than white noise on a cultural bandwagon, but it would make sense. I think the viewpoint may be a little extreme, but the gist of it may be valid. The thing is, while Obama is no JFK, there are a lot parallels between Obama and JFK in that Kennedy got hammered for being Catholic. Sounds silly now, but back then it was a huge issue. I don’t think the country will ever truly get beyond racism as long as those who are disadvantaged continue to see themselves as such. I know that may sound racist, but seriously, there are a lot of minorities that have pulled themselves out of terrible living conditions and made something of their life. Along with that though, those of us NOT in those circumstances need to do what we can to assist (and I don’t mean monitarily).
