I live in Fairbanks, Alaska; I’m Yup’ik; I own a blue kuspuk. Where I live they are so common. I even wear an Obama pin because it’s matches and it’s pretty awesome.

To be so high and mighty, you dems sure are culturally challenged. That outfit is called a Kuspuk. A traditional native dress worn by the Alaska Native people. You claim to be sensitive to minorities? Give me a break. That’s an insult. If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear you were a bunch of republicans. Until you live in Alaska, especially the bush, don’t make fun of our people. A sense of humor is great, but you’re implying that just because you’re all in the lower 48 that you have a better sense of fashion. Native people give these as gifts to non-native people as well as natives. I aree with BB. Apparantly manners are lacking in the lower 48. Aside from that, the outfit was probably given to her as a gift from the people she was visiting. I would have worn it too. Do they not have manners in the Lower 48?

Actually… speaking as an Alaskan, a lot of Alaska natives, particularly the eskimo peoples, still wear variations of their traditional outfits as part of everyday life. In the rural parts of northern Alaska, a kuspuk is still a completely normal piece of clothing to wear at any time. Heck, I had one when I was little, and I grew up in a city. I agree that it’s weird she wears them, but in reality it isn’t actually a costume of any kind. It’s a widely worn piece of clothing. That particular pink one is beyond hideous, but many of them are really pretty.
