This Christian Fundie thought it was an irony win. America has been so wealthy for so long that we’ve forgotten God. And if it requires making America poor to get this nation to turn back to Him, so be it.

How many of us voted according to how much we’d be getting under the various tax cut plans ? Elephants AND Donkeys are guilty of this …. elephants moreso.

Not the stereotype. You are an American who is Christian. These are followers of a sect who openly believe that only people who have been born in the US and follow John Hagee can be true Christians. Hagee and his group have openly claimed that no one in Europe or any other country can be Christian. I tried to provide a way to get to the original text by the person who took the picture but it didn’t come through the comment control. I don’t usually comment here. I don’t usually see pictures taken by those I know. Careful Melody, your probably one of those people I am truly grateful to have around. If I knew how to do the smiley things one would be here with a wink.

There may be little difference in most people’s actual practice, I admit. But prayer generally is supposed to take into account your own lack of understanding & desire to know God’s will. I think their [the folks in the pic] desire may have been honest, but the zeal really is misplaced in more than just the ironic image. As frou pointed out, praying for people most adversely affected would have been smarter. It also would not have been as media-worthy, tho, and there’s plenty of christians who think media coverage is the way to go.

Looks very much like a scene in the old 10 Commandments movie, where Moses (Charlton Heston) comes down from the mountain carrying the stone tablets of the Commandments and while he’s been away, the party has gotten way out of hand, and the people are worshipping, well, a big gold bull. The book say’s “calf” but in the movie it has horns.

Moses gets pissed off, smashes the tablets, melts down the calf and pours it down the throats of several people. Gold has a rather low melting point for a metal, but it is still a bit too warm to be a healthy beverage.

God is also pissed.

The humor is that this is a rather powerful and widely recognized (at least among people my age – upper 40′s) religious image. It is probably the best known visual example of a violation of the First Commandment.

The picture is damned funny.

I have no problem believing that praying for gas to go down was a factor. I know I was praying pretty hard. And you do realize that ‘laying hands on’ is a bit different than ‘praying to’, right? Although, I think they did miss the obvious irony of laying hands on a symbolic creation instead of the people involved.

You’re not supposed to make fun of prayer. Prayer is a sacred function of an individual crying out to God. And things aren’t funny in deadly serious (not necessarily fundamentalist) church groups simply because humor has the potential for making you look past whatever it is you’re supposed to believe and seeing something lacking.

God I love the Quakers; THERE’S a bunch with a sense of humor!
