You could be very right about that. Although I think that McCain would have had a better chance had he run the campaign like Rush was telling him to, lol. Every time Hillary did what Rush said she did better, and the few times that McCain seemed to take his advice his poll numbers jumped along with it. Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that Rush is the end-all of politics, but he does have his finger on the pulse and seems to read it pretty well. He’s like any other well-informed pundit.

If they were simply ‘hate-filled bags of pus’, as you so aptly put it, then their audience would die out, a la Al Franken’s audience. A shock jock appeals to a certain type of person, and that’s it. I don’t listen to Howard Stern, because I think he’s an idiot. There are only so many boob jokes you can make before getting tiresome. Rush and Hannity, on the other hand, tend to try to explain the anger of the left in a meaningful, albeit an over the top, Conservative way. It’s interesting to me that you see points that differ from your view as ‘hateful’ and ‘not worth taking seriously’. And I find it interesting that you view ema and I as basically stupid drones who are arguing points that either we don’t really believe or that aren’t worth taking seriously anyway. Your hatred is puzzling. And before you disagree with me calling you hateful toward ema and I, comments you’ve made in the past (especially toward me) peg you firmly in the hateful column.

I realize that perception is reality in a lot of cases. However, I never saw Bush’s stuttering or making up words to be a detriment or a sign of a lack of intelligence. I’m biased, though, and not for the reasons you think.

Lemme esplain

My dad is probably one of the smartest people I know. He’s got several Bachelor’s degrees, several Masters degrees, a couple of Doctorates, and is the head of the department in which he teaches at college. His brain works faster than his mouth, unfortunately. A lot of times he will be ten sentences ahead in his mind, and just quit talking because he doesn’t realize he hasn’t finished the conversation. He will sometimes do the same thing in reverse, meaning he will pick up a conversation halfway through and not realize that you have no clue what he’s talking about. He has a bad habit of combining words, but can still debate with the best of them, if you can get him to slow down and actually say what he’s thinking at the time that he’s thinking it.

I have also read somewhere that the combining of words as Bush and my dad do are a sign of intelligence for the reasons I just mentioned, that the brain is working at light speed and the mouth is only able to totter along, trying to catch up. It’s a function of how we were made, not a lack of intelligence.

Perhaps it is because Obama is known as someone who appears to be intelligent and displays excellent public speaking skills – to the point of being labled elitist. his intelligence is not doubted, so it is not an issue worth pursuing by a sensationalist media.
Palin, however, with her ‘folksy’ persona and apparent inability to handle any challenging questions, makes it easy for the media to target her intelligence. The easiest, most obvious way for the media to rank this is her education.
What mileage would the media get out of proving that the smart sounding one is smart? Showing that the dumb sounding one actually is intellectually challenged, however…

Obama did well in school, McCain and Palin, not as good. Thats

In theory, sure.

But think about it – somebody offers you a shot at the #2 spot in your profession. Could you say “no”? In a profession with well-defined qualifications or one where introspection and humility are rewarded, you might say “I’m not up to it”. But politics isn’t either of those, and here is McCain, one of the masters of the game, telling you you can do it.

My comment about Palin in the primaries, though, was the tip of a complex thought. Her career from here out will say a lot about the Republican party. Unless the Republicans recast her as completely and irreparably incompetent, or she bows out of the National spotlight forever, she will define a branch of the party sharply enough that I would not be surprised to see three viable choices on the ballot in 2012:

Democratic: Obama
Rah Rah GOP: Palin
New Republican (social moderate, fiscal conservative, semi-isolationist foreign policy): McCain 2000

Yeah, I like the idea of Palin as a boat-anchor on the big-government borrow-and-spend rule-the-world theocrats. I also hope we get a legitimate conservative party, because on pretty much every value that conservatism is about, the current GOP is even worse than the Democrats.

It’s not a double standard and the media are not going easy on anyone. Reporters don’t waste time digging for things where there’s no sign anything was every buried. If it’s common knowledge that, say, someone went to five schools before they could get any kind of degree, or they were a legacy at an ivy league school that they probably couldn’t have gotten into on their own merits, then yes, the press will scent something and go digging. If it’s common knowledge that someone graduated magna cum laude and has a doctorate, then the reporters won’t bother digging there, they will dig somewhere where there’s a sign of something wrong.

And unless you want to include Fox News as having a liberal bias, you can’t say that ALL the media are giving Obama a pass. If there were anything even the slightest bit hinky about Obama’s academic record, Fox would have been on it.

So I ask again – why are you trying to make something from nothing, ema and Trainwreck Chaser? Why do you expect the media to dig where there is no dirt? Why are YOU digging where there is no dirt?

Do you not get that maybe the reason dirt isn’t sticking to this guy because there is no real dirt so far? And that the reason that dirt sticks to Palin and Bush is because there’s just so damn MUCH of it?

Perspective of a foreign devil welcome here? From what I can see at this distance, George Bush and Sarah Palin would, in all likelihood, be pretty damn funny if you met them at the pub on a Saturday afternoon. They’d probably make pretty good neighbors, they might even be good to have over for a barbecue.
The sad truth is that the last eight years (or in Sarah’s case, the last eighteen weeks, or whatever) has unfortunately proven that – shonky movies to the contrary – the Oval Office isn’t a place for normal people. In all honesty, if someone got me up in front of all those cameras, I would come across a whole lot worse than Sarah. And I’m nice, and I’ve never blown up a moose or anything…

That’s certainly the impression we had from our distance – the poor man, standing out there shouting “the Mac is back!” in the full knowledge that anyone (at least anyone with enough foresight to have a pee before a long car-trip) would just laugh. Baghdad Bob came to mind, except that unlike BB, McCain himself looked like a thoroughly decent man.
We down here in Oz won’t miss George, we’ve loved everything we’ve seen of Barack… but we were more than impressed with the quality of McCain’s heart. His concession speech was one to define grace and dignity.
