I was usually too busy throwing up or being a hollowed out blueish/greenish shell due to travel sickness to be a deliberate nuisance while in an vehicle… and I’d have given body parts to have been able to read in a car (I still don’t go far from home without a book)

My cousins despised Bush when he first came to office because of his relentlessly pro-execution stance. The US may be all hot and bothered about abortion; but for most of Europe, THE immorality of the modern age is that we still execute criminals, rather than locking them up for the rest of their lives. So to them, electing Bush as president would be like Operation Rescue looking at a country who elected an abortionist as president.

I was lucky enough that both parents read TONS of books, and also that they had a TV with lousy reception (pre-cable days). So if there wasn’t anything on NBC, the only other option was to read a book, play a game, or go climb a tree.
I only got to see Sesame street when visiting the grandparents…and was really ticked off the summer of the Watergate hearings, because it pre-empted Sesame street. But oh, Barbara Jordan’s glorious voice still exists in my head!

I’m not saying I didn’t watch any tv as a kid. The difference in your example is that your parents watched it with you and also did other activities with you. i am talking about parents who don’t do ANY parenting to speak of. They just assume Blues Clues and Sesame Street will teach their kids what they need to know, and that they rarely even MONITOR what the kids are watching or what video games they are playing when they’re a little older as long as they stay out of the parents hair.

Everybody watches SOME tv. It’s about how much it dominates the rest of what you do in your home life. Your parents don’t sound like the type I’m referring to

me and my sibs were all raised by the box

my mom used turning it off as ONE form of punishment
not the ONLY form so we did in fact listen to her and
respected her

my dad never saw harm in tv

my sister is the youngest at 17 while me and my brother
are at our last teen years

we HARDLY watch tv anymore and i believe the box never
did harm. as a family we were/are close and watched tv
together at times

my parents mastered the art of multitasking and fit in family
outings ALONG with solo tv time for us (they blocked the
mature stuff until it was appropriate)

i learned from their mistakes and am still learning from their
triumphs so that i may become as good a parent

of course, thats just my experience ;]

well both
we know sadam was not involved with 9/11 he had no WMD and we beleve that bush knew this too there was no real reasion to go to war in iraq especley in such a rush as we did and re resent the “if you are nit with us you are agenst us” asstude he took witch lead to our local goverment caveing in lieing to us and following him to a unnessercy war TBH we do not realy care what his real rwasion for war was but we are dam shue it was illegle. we also think that the rush to was followed by the lack of planning for it’s aftermath makes us think he is a gunho texen marshle wanter be with the subtley of a kick to the face.
and that is before we get to things like rendition filghts a smertile extridation policeys. and the hole axies of evle things

on a non TWOT side his attude of climate change the hole “I can do what /i like” sort of attude to trade agrements and the like

all in all bush is not realy liked this side of the pond and frankley anyboady who is in the same party as him is not geing to get a good start

@ Kuromisa. That’s one end of the spectrum of the digital babysitter problem. Parents really SHOULD try to make some time for their kids. Play a game, take them to a family restaurant, go to the park. Even just sit at teh dinner table when everybody’s home, so that you know what’s going on with them. I know we’re all busy with working hard in this economy. Two incomes are necessary in most households. Families really need to try to be a FAMILY sometimes though. That’s a major leg of the foundation of our culture and values.

The other end of the spectrum is parents with little kids who come home stressed, pick up the kids from daycare, want time to themselves, so they plunk the kid in front of a tv or video game instead of relaxing by reading a book together or something. Then they wonder why the kids won’t listen to them.

Since I seem to be one of few minors on here, I can speak from experience–I get home from school and barely see my parents the rest of the night. Dad usually has dinner ready when my mother, my brother, and I get there (since he’s self-employed), and sometimes we eat at the table together, but usually, my parents eat in one room, and my siblings and I in another. The TV is always on, either way. Then my brother and I go to our rooms (he’s got an Xbox 360 in his), and my little sister does her homework and plops down in front of the TV. I read and play online. I only ever see my parents if I have to get something signed for school. And, I mean, my parents and I don’t have a great relationship anyway, so I’m kind of glad. But still…I wish I did get along better with them.

Oh, I agree. Fortunately, I was a voracious reader as a kid, so I usually had my book in front of me and the TV as background noise. But I’m watching my little brother and sister grow up as slaves to the idiot box, and that’s a little sad. When I was my sister’s age, I was never seen without a book (and in fact, that’s pretty much true now). She’d rather watch Hannah Montana.

That may be logical thinking, but WHY do people dislike Bush? Does the majority of the world dislike him because of his policies? Or do they think he started a war just for oil/national distraction?

Personally, I think he has more information for the reasons why this war was started, but that’s also why I don’t have power over the military.

I am of the opinion that this is a cop out to actual parenting. No offense to you personally, but I think the electronic babysitter has got to go. Reducing children to drooling idiots with the TV just creates people who:

A) May not listen to real authority when it’s presented, hence disrespect to teachers, etc

B) Causes kids to not want to read, and as a corollary, causes tv and video game addictions (the AMA has defined the condition now and applies it to kids)

C) Don’t learn how to parent themselves.

I am disappointed in my generation as parents. There are a few good ones left, but I see too many who let their kids run wild or cop out like this.
