I dunno, diplomacy and peace are pretty compelling tactics….
I enjoy using them – which means, intuitively enough, yes techphets, I do think we shouldn’t have invaded the sovereign nation of Iraq. Don’t mean to ruin the lighthearted mood, but there are serious atrocities being committed by American soldiers. We have soldiers who’ve been convicted of committing murder in Iraq and they’re getting 5 months in jail. Versus conscientious objectors who are getting years in jail.

It’s public knowledge that we invaded Iraq because people believed the lies told by Bush & Cheney. It’s also public knowledge that both they & other elected officials who voted for the war, are making money hand over fist through defense contracts.

Point of order: An 18 year old kid has independant rights and can choose or not choose to be in the military. It in no way reflects on the parent of a supporter of the war if his (or her) child decides not to get into the military. It doesn’t make for questionable moral ground unless that person has specifically said that he (or she) has made it so their child can’t get in to the military, then sends others to war.

Sorry, I was under the impression that my statement did not require any additional explanation. While nobody, including Abe Lincoln, is perfect, I hold picking this particular sentence as en example for such imprefection to be against the spirit on which the US was founded. Also, it seems to me that with the resurgence of religion in political life and the erosion of seperation of power – for which Lincoln so eloquently advocates with his sentence (the separation of power, not the erosion thereof) – much of the ideals that made the US stand out in the world are on the retreat.

In short PiMan’s comment seemed to me a typical – and in itself to a large extent trollish – affirmation of a member of the flat earth society.

Perhaps this did not really come out as much as I hoped in my initial comment. If you wish seniority in the forum to be respected, you should indicate it. In any case the inital comment did not in any way reveal that has “a reputation for knowing what he’s talking about”.

I think the thing about the Bush Twins wasn’t that they owed out country military service, per se, but that any politician who supported the war and didn’t have a child serving in the military has questionable moral ground to send our sons and daughters overseas to kill and die. Chelsea’s dad didn’t start any major wars, withdrew our troops from Mogadishu when it became apparent we couldn’t win a military victory there, and didn’t lose any American troops when he did involve us in the Balkans conflicts. If he’d involved us in a years long occupation of a foreign nation, I can assure you that I, for one, would have been screaming for her to enlist.

Oh, I almost forgot: Chelsea was never over 18 when her dad was president!

It seems to be (seemed to be at one point) a huge deal that the Bush twins never enlisted, but Chelsea was never disparaged for going to college instead. It’s interesting to me how Dems tend to throw out the ‘your kids were never in the military and that makes you unfit to lead!’ balloon here and there. It’s done on both sides, but it’s a little more prevalent when it’s a Repub running than when a Dem with an unenlisted kid is running.

I can’t remember the name of the Democratic organization, but in 2006 and 2008 they origanized to elect 60 or so veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts to national office. Hundreds more ran at the local level. Does GOM call disrespecting veterans because they’re liberals “respecting the troops”? ‘Cause I sure don’t.

I don’t think I’m playing to the fear-mongering. I live in a red state, and I hear a lot of crap that you probably haven’t. I’m as hopeful as you are, if not more.
Still, we shouldn’t ignore history: Presidents can get shot. Your point about John Hinckley, Jr. is in agreement with my point about one idiot with one bullet. Further, I ended on a positive note about the Secret Service. We have worked hard and lived through much to get to this point in our history, so of course I don’t want to see it taken away. That’s all.

You’ve hit on one of my deepest fears. Sadly, there is a higher-than-normal chance that a Black President would be assassinated, let alone one whose opposition tried to label him a Muslim* and a Terrorist. (And, yes: There are people who still believe those lies!)
Due to intelligence, the Secret Service began protecting Obama earlier than other candidates. It only takes one idiot with one bullet. I think Obama is a good, brave man. Michelle Obama must be worried out of her head, especially with two young daughters to raise. I’m freaked out, because there is a Kennedy-esque style to the man and his family. Kennedy’s popularity at the time of his death is debatable, but Ronald Reagan was relatively popular when he was shot. The post-Kennedy, post-911 Secret Service is higher-tech than ever, and I hope it’s enough.
*Unfortunately, Muslim=”bad guy” to certain people.
