Usually, you would be right, but in this case King Juan Carlos received nearly unlimited dictatorial powers when Franco died in 1975 and yet decided to make the transition to democracy and give those powers up. Not only is it a rather unusual occurrence, it’s quite an example.

She was not Queen Sofia of Greece but PRINCESS Sofia. She was the eldest daughter of King Pavlos and Queen Frederika. She was still a princess when she married Juan Carlos, and only became queen when Juan Carlos was made king in 1975.

And it’s a shame people here at Pundit Kitchen don’t know the other royals apart from the British RF. Shame.

don juan carlos is maybe the coolest monarch ever… he not only made spain democratic again after franco, but he also shut up hugo chavez… the storys worth checking out, its on wikipedia i think… just search for “por que no te callas” …viva el rey!

I have met a Mountbatten here in the States. He got in trouble for public indecency back in May 2001 in Toledo, Ohio; he was taking part in a May Day ritual and they were trying to do some things the old way. I talked to him online and he seemed nice enough there but sort of distant in person; I gathered that he was kind of busy. I also gathered that his family connections were enough to get him a decent lawyer but perhaps not good enough that his extended family acknowledge him much…

So I do wonder if the biggest irony wouldn’t simply be that you get exactly what you want and how you want with the joke being on God. Then again, I do think of many random things.

They are, from left: King Juan Carlos of Spain, his daughter-in-law Letizia, his son the Crown Prince Felipe (formerly World’s Most Eligible Bachelor), and his wife, Queen Sofia (she’s originally from the Greek royal family).

They’re all distantly related to the English royals, but (other than here) much better-behaved.
