The U.S.: We’ll liberate the F*** out of you!

    • ice_army says:

      Yep!=) I lol’d.

    • mothergoose says:

…and then rebuild your country after we’ve repressed you

    • Uncle Fester says:

I’ve always thought the abandonment of the Neutron Bomb project was sad. Democracy at the touch of a button, minimal biowaste and residual radiation, very limited property damage… talk about the Republican wet dream…

      • froofrou says:

Iron Man again: “I prefer the weapon you only have to fire once.”

        • They say it is better to be respected than to be feared. I ask, why can’t you have both…

          Love that movie.

        • eddiepscetti says:

When I heard about Iron Man, I was expected to be disappointed. But, when I flew over to the States in September I got to see it on the plane, and I have to admit that the movie was pretty good! Robert Downey Jr. really made the movie!

            • mothergoose says:

I heard that Iron Man II is coming out this summer…I agree, Eddie, I wasn’t expecting much, but was delightfully surprised. Didn’t think Downey could pull it off, but he was pretty good. Now if they can just keep him off the heroin…

              • It’s his special rocket fuel…

              • Kuromisa says:

We recently got an Iron Man costume at work for the bears, so I got one for my little brother. He hates cute things, but he loves rock music, and Iron Man is one of his favorite songs.

              • FaileV says:

I am the same. I heard about IronMan and went “meh” after all he is one of my least favorite marvel characters, and the marvel movies with awesome people like kurt weren’t that great so…why waste money
then i was dragged along and had the pleasant epiphany that marvel is doing awesome things now. I’m really curious what they’ll do with people I actually like…like captain america >.>

                • blah says:

They’re supposed to be making a Thor movie as well as Cap. Cap’s is supposed to actually be set in WWII as it should be. Then they’re making an Avengers movie, and using the same actors throughout. Hence the cameos of Nick Fury in Ironman and Tony Stark in Hulk.
                  -
In unrelated news, Transformers 2 will be out in the near future too.

                • Jane St.Clair says:

I hate Captain America almost as much as I hate Cyclops and Superman. I was really just meh about Ironman until my brother bullied me into seeing the movie and I thought it was the sh*t.

                  • I’ve always been a Wolverine/Spiderman/Venom fan myself. Speaking of DC, I need to read Kingdom Come again.

                    • The Pirate King says:

That comic roxrs my soxrs! I love when the re-re Captain Marvel sacrifices himself and Supes goes to kick the U.N’s a$$.

                  • AC says:

I couldn’t be bothered with the random explosions, but apart from that I thought it was really engaging and funny. Downey Jnr was so good at the part.
                    Better than Spiderman anyway…

                    • I liked Toby as Spiderman but Raimi seemed to just be missing something in the Spiderman movies. I couldn’t place my fingers on it. Made them very meh… That and the Dunster could have been removed entirely.

In Iron Man’s defense, the explosions weren’t random. Things were just exploding in reaction to all the awesome. : P

                      • AC says:

Oh aye, how many baddies can you put in one film? I wanted to puke every time he was talking to MJ and the sob story with Harry was tedious. (Was his “noble sacrifice” at the end supposed to be surprising?)The second film was good (Doc Ock!) and the first film was quite fun. 3rd was dire.

                        • Ya, they made Venom whiny.. YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO DO THAT!!!

Lynn hates all of them and I am very meh. The noble sacrifice was rather trite, glad we agree. I do laugh at emo Petey dancing though. Just cuz it was so random.

                        • slanagat says:

I haven’t seen the third one, but I liked Tobey Maguire’s work in the first. Spiderman is supposed to be very human, conflicted and maybe even a bit whiny about acceptance of his role in society. If he seemed too emo, blame the source material, IMHO. And there were some nice fan service moments with Kirsten Dunst. (Wet t-shirt FTW!)

                        • See the third and you will catch my meaning. Petey is very human in the first two and even in the third. Tobey does a great job. However, Emo Peter is in the third. … You just have to see it for yourself to catch my reference. The angst hits the roof in the third.

                        • froofrou says:

And the dancing. Oh my God the dancing. No white boy should ever subject us to that!

                        • The dancing is what I thought was funny. Just so random and silly looking.

                        • froofrou says:

Dancing emo boy is dancing. And emo.

                        • Pretty much which is what made me laugh. A Pfffftt wtf laugh.

                        • Jane St.Clair says:

I liked the first two, but I heard bad things about the third so I stayed away. Just like I didn’t bother with the third X-men movie. But then, before I knew it sucked I knew it was about the Phoenix, and I hate Jean Gray almost as much as I hate Cyclops, and the whole Phoenix saga never did anthing for me. I always want to wallop Wolverine about the head and yell, “what the hell are you wasting time on THAT whiny waste of space for? Go down the hall and check out some Storm action!”

                        • viking gal says:

Yah. For sure! Although maybe Storm doesn’t like his cee-gars?

                        • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

@Jane: I once again am confirmed that I made the BEST damn
                          choice in forced marriage wives.
@Everyone else in the comic thread: One day I might give you
my dissertation on how X3 shattered the X-men universe and
strangled their own story line while drowning in a truck stop toilet
that hadnt been flushed since Nixon was in office.
I HATE X3 and I KNEW Iron Man was going to be great. Robert
Downey Jr. doesnt do bad work when he’s making sober decisions
and John Favreau is just a good director, down to earth, hates plot
holes, and can usually put forth a good performance himself.
Iron Man was excellent, and expectedly so.
And lastly @ Failev: Iron Man, The New Punisher, and The
Incredible Hulk were all made by the new Marvel Pictures Studios
Previous comic book movies were liscened by Marvel Pictures
Studios. You see. Stan Lee had a HAND in the first few films.
He’s got complete control over the ones from here on out.
And might I say, it shows…. easily.

                        • froofrou says:

I liked the new Superman film (Not Marvel, right?), but it irritated me that they basically changed the storyline. I hate when you screw with the classics. It’s like having Bugs Bunny be shot by Elmer Fudd. Ditto on the New Batman, even though that movie ROCKED.

                        • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

The new batman is staying VERY close to the original comic books
series. But Heath Ledger’s untimely death kinda mangled their plans, and well as the rest of us. I was sad to see Heath go. In my opinion the BEST
Joker yet. Maybe because, he played him exactly how I would have
                          played him… oh well.

                        • froofrou says:

I agree about Heath Ledger. Never have I wanted to know the pathos behind a bad guy more than when I realized that the Joker had told several differing stories about how he got his scars. I WANNA KNOW! But, sadly, we never will.

                        • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

Indeed. I know all the variations. Ive always been a bit of The Red Hood
myself. I have a Joker Halloween costume that Ive worn for almost
5 years in a row, each year the hair and face paint kept coming closer
and closer to The Dark Knight rendition of the Joker. I got
goosebumps when I watched the movie. Where other folks loved
Superman, Spiderman, Venom. Good guys who were really good
and bad guys who were at best “neutral”. The Joker was always just
plain bad, and funny. My favorite combo. So perhaps once I take
over the world, your new competent overlord will have green hair, a purple suit and laugh that’ll send a chill down your spine. We’ll have to see..
                          Mwuahahahahahhahahahaa!

                        • eddiepscetti says:

If you like Heath Ledger, I recommend the movie Candy. But not if you’re on drugs..

                        • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

Oh and on a side note, the best way to describe the Joker’s true
nature, in the graphic novel Arkham Asylum, The Joker leads a
revolt at Arkham, taking it over and taking the staff hostage.
A single challenge is sent out to Batman over a radio: This is
Mary batman, she’s a nurse here at Arkham, and hopes to one day
go to medical school. Mary’s such a nice girl, and she has the
most beautiful blue… eyes… *a scream of a young woman is
heard over the radio* You have one hour Batman, and bring a white stick.

                        • froofrou says:

I rather enjoyed the old Batman cartoons on Saturday mornings when Mark Hamill was doing the voice of the Joker. Freaky, and appeals to my Star Wars geek :o )
                          -
Of course, Jack Nicholson will always be the quintisetial (sp?) Joker to the people who have either never read the comics (guilty, *sigh*) or never seen the cartoon. To us over here, Heath Ledger has a lock on it.

                        • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

Well Mark Hamill was always my favorite Joker Voice actor.
But I think Heath nailed how the Joker would sound, in “real life”
As real as a batman world could be.

                        • froofrou says:

Can you imagine, though, how awesome it would be to have him in another movie like that? *sigh* The world lost more than a great actor when it lost Heath Ledger. No one will ever be able to do that part again with any credibility.
                          -
Now Batman, OTOH, can stop with the growling any time he chooses. Clicky the name. Bring Kleenix.

                        • Maxwell Silverhammer says:

I dunno, I would like to think I’M up for the task froo perhaps maybe
there’s some way for me to audition? *grins*

                        • froofrou says:

Just don’t come to my house and do it……clowns scare the beejeebers out of me! It was all I could do to even make it through The Dark Knight……I had to look away when the masked clowns were up on the screen, and only when Ledger’s face paint started flaking and I could see skin underneath could I look at him!

                        • Kuromisa says:

                          >_> I’m going to let my nerd-self out again and mention that I spent my evening working on a costume for a Harley Quinn teddy bear, so that my Joker teddy wouldn’t be lonely.
                          -
Loved, loved, loved the movie, by the way. Heath Ledger played the Joker very differently from what I expected but did it very well. He was definitely a switch from the very dramatic, funny, almost harmless-seeming Joker I’d grown up with in the cartoons. Very effective, though.

                        • Jane St.Clair says:

What an awesome Batman convo that I seem to have missed. Your Harley Quinn bear sounds cute Kuro!
                          *bats her eyes at Max*
You say the sweetest things. ; )

                        • I am going to have a little movie date with Lynn tonight and watch Dark Knight after the boys go to bed. A bit of snuggle movie time is in order.

              • PortlandMark says:

Some super hero group or other getting made into a movie, too. I don’t know which one, that wasn’t my form of geekdom. Something where The Hulk, Iron Man, and Thor all fight together?

Paladin. Not bad for a scrapped program.

    • blah says:

Brings in mind a quote from Iron Man: “That’s how dad did it, that’s how America does it, and it’s worked out pretty well so far.”

    • BattleCry says:

Yeah, that’s no Paladin, I had to look for it but I found it becuase there’s NOTHING like this out there….
It’s called the NLOS (No Line Of Site), cannon. See here for more info:

This is not a Paladin, it’s a mock up for a future weapon called the NLOS cannon.

      • Other side of the Fence says:

Welcome to 1940s. All the major battleships in WW2 had main guns that had 40,000 to 60,000 yards range, that place it well beyond the horizon. Fancy tech? They just send spotter planes ahead to guide the gunners. Just another old concept with fancy electronics.

        • Uncle Fester says:

You missed out part of that.

“…with fancy electronics, that screws up in tropical and arctic conditions and in the presence of very dry sand or water.”

          There. That works now

        • Colonel Sandurz says:

The idea is that this cannon will hit with the first single shell, and won’t need to walk their slowly reloading massive explosives on the target.

        • BattleCry says:

And those WWII battleships with the 16 incherss also would be pushed sidways by broadside firings of those ships. That’s the problem with mobile artillery. First there’s accuracy and then there’s stability. In order to lob an accurate shell miles and miles away is going to require a real KABOOM that could shoot the vehicle backwards or turn it over.

Overcoming that is a major problem.

  11. lowly grunt says:

Any photographers know how they got that picture? It reminds me of a picture I saw a while ago of a fighter jet breaking the sound barrier. Pretty cool.

Hmm… seems to be some discussion about whether the sound barrier is actually being broken. link above

    • ck says:

Very fast shutter speed, I’m guessing.

      • Lynn Nexus says:

shutters on regular film cameras are very fast, but in all honesty in order to get a shot like this it’s actually more like a movie camera because you can’t react fast enough to get that shot. You start takeing pics before they do it and then stop afterwards, they take something like 150 frames a second…

Least that’s what I’ve come to understand. It’s kinda like the “sport” setting on some less expensive cameras that take like 3 picks in fast succession.

        • And that is my photolab girl talking. *snicker*

        • Colonel Sandurz says:

Actuallly, even the off-the-shelf cameras can do that nowadays. I recall seeing add for a photocamera that can take >200 frames per second at normal lighting conditions etc.

then again, you could simply tie the camera into the fire control, so they’re triggered at the same time. That might piss off the guys who spend millions on R&D though.

          • Lynn Nexus says:

Problem with the claims is that the photos that they show you that are supposedly taken by the camera in question are almost always taken with a high quality film camera. People are all over digital cameras but a film camera takes the equivalent of a 25 megapixel picture, problem is you don’t get to see your pic till it’s developed. With digital you can get a glimpse of it right away.

I’m sure that the camera in question is a very expensive very nice camera but with new features it is almost inevitable that something else is being sacrificed. thats just kinda how they do it… And if your memory card can’t record at that rate then you’re pretty well bumfunned out of whatever you were trying to take…

  12. ck says:

    Boom, boom, boom, boom,
Every time you drop the bomb,
You kill the God your child has born.
    Boom, boom, boom, boom.

  13. Gerike says:

That is the NLOS Cannon, under development, firing what appears to be an advanced artilary shell. This gun is not in use yet, expected delivery to the US ARMY in 2009.

  14. Bird says:

That’s surely no paladin… I slept in one for 6 months. Gerike… How the hell can you tell that’s “an advanced artilary (artillery) shell”? Looks like a blur to me, and I know my artillery shells.

  15. threatcapped says:

odd part is that vehicle is a true hybrid

  16. spartout says:
