A commonly held view is that the prototype for Santa Claus, before it became attached to the Turkish Saint, was Odin/Wotan and the wild hunt.

But chances are, it ante-dates the the one-eyed king of the gods’ taste for fresh souls in mid-winter.

Saint Nicholas (and his Moorish slave, Peter) became linked to
to the older image on mainland Europe, the British version, Father Christmas, owing more to Jack i’th’ Green than the freshly flayed wolf skin cloak look of Wotan.

The modern Santa Image really only appears in the early 20th C, as Coca-Cola’s marketing reach expanded, the red suited Santa being their’s and Clement Moore’s The Night Before Christmas…

I’m not aware that the church had anything at ALL to do with Santa Claus. You’re going to have to back that up, Kemosabe. He’s completely pagan as I recall.

Actually Santa Claus was from the church. Saint Nicholas or
Nicholas of Myra from 270AD was from modern day Turkey.

It just makes an already bitter coffee bean that much more bitter, IMO. I take my coffee like a dessert: full of milk and sugar to the point that when you drink it your jaw locks up, but not because it’s bitter.

Anyone else notice the lack of Scientology defendants? The only reason I read these comments is to see the flame wars from TerryEO and the like. Doesn’t look like the title has enough information to stand out in their RSS feed. You need to have keywords like “Xenu” or “Scientology” so they know to post. You don’t think they happen to read this on their own time, do you?

Personally, I thought “Freeze Ray” was very sweet. “On the Rise” has a nice building tension to it, with the dynamic between hopeful affection on one side of the split-screen and simmering hatred on the other.
