Completely true of what chappell would say. But only if he WAS in office…. sigh.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s 12-volume autobiographical work Confessions, was written in 1770. In Book 6, which was written around 1767, he recalls:
At length I recollected the thoughtless saying of a great princess, who, on being informed that the country people had no bread, replied, “Then let them eat pastry!”

                    -
Not that I’m judging, mind you, derogatory attitudes from the priveleged toward the masses well predates the phrase hoi polloi.

I’d agree.. the Greeks were pretty much social Darwinists…

Point being, for those who didn’t catch it, that throughout history this mentality crosses the spectrum of political ideologies. It’s not exclusive to right-wing conservatives — the very society most lauded as being the originator of democracy (arguably, UF, I concede that) coined the original deragatory term for the lowest classes.

                        • ubr says:

The irony is that occasionally people will confuse if for “hoity toity” which I find no-end amusing, naturally.

                        • Uncle Fester says:

In the current mindset, however, the great unwashed, with just enough intelligence to be slaves or cannon fodder (which is an Imperial Roman view) are irredeemably so, and money is the sole basis of power, and it is a Right Wing conceit.
The Left believe that, given a chance, even the ones commonly viewed as the lowest of the low can actually make something of themselves if the system isn’t weighted against them. Equal opportunities for all being the ideal but in the end the ‘system’ becomes bureaucratic, corrupt and generally unworkable, with ‘some pigs being more equal than others’

Both are almost certainly equally right, and equally wrong…

                        • froofrou says:

The biggest problem a lot of right-wingers have with the ‘equal opportunities’ spouted by the Left (capital L) is that it tends to go a little too far, trying to ‘pay back’ injustices of the past. In that way, you don’t have equal protection under the law, or even equal rights. Instead, you have a minority (misnomer) given something simply BECAUSE he/she is a minority. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it happens with enough frequency that it causes alarm bells in the Conservative’s mind. Then, they overcompensate the other direction, and no one is happy.

                        • froofrou says:

                          *overcompensate IN the other direction.
                          -
                          Sorry.

                        • rhorho says:

As a leftie, my biggest trouble with the right
is the spin-machine that points only to the
failures (inherent in any bureaucracy) and
uses the exception to debunk the entire
system. In the light of day, social programs,
while not perfect, do help the majority of
those who need them. For example, the notion
that “welfare mothers” do nothing but collect
checks and have more children is pervasive,
yet widely untrue in most cases.

I question the motivation behind the spin,
finding myself doubtful that those on the right
want to help anyone but themselves.

                        • At the risk of drawing Right Wing laser fire, I will state that they Do want to help just themselves…

                        • rhorho says:

I fight the conclusion, but it’s there, so yes.

                        • froofrou says:

If ‘diversity’ was as benign as it sounds, then ‘affirmative action’ would no longer be necessary. I mentioned both sides having issues with being able to do it right, and I stand by that. The Left goes too far to ‘pay back’, the Right overcompensates to the point that the car goes off the road. We shouldn’t debunk an entire system for a few abuses, but we also don’t need to use that system (i.s. ‘diversity’ or ‘affirmative action’ or whatever you want to call it) to screw over those who you feel aren’t as worthy because they haven’t struggled. This is where the Middle Class suffers more than anyone, because a lower middle class white kid will be passed over in favor of a lower middle class minority with the exact same scores, or even lower scores. Where does that leave the lower middle class non-minority?
                          -
That’s an extreme example, and doesn’t happen often. It’s also a talking point, but I will cite the story I’m talking about if you’ll remind me when I get home. It wasn’t an internet story, it was in a book I read……I’ll see if I can find iit on the internet for sh!ts and giggles. It has happened in the past, though, and that’s what starts the Right pinging like a sonar. Then thyey decide to do away with the whole thing. It’s a mess.

                        • froofrou says:

This post was in answer to Fester’s quote here: “Equal opportunities for all being the ideal but in the end the ’system’ becomes bureaucratic, corrupt and generally unworkable, with ’some pigs being more equal than others’”

                        • There is a reason why I try to avoid the race question on applications. Not because I think I am a victim because I know others have it worse. I try to avoid it because my skin shouldn’t matter in the job market. It is why I never really liked affirmative action as it made people into commodities like Pokemon. The gotta catch them all attitude of it was rather annoying.

Granted, I can see why it is implimented since apparently we have wank jobs who have issue with skin color but I still felt the niggling urge to post my annoyance.

                        • froofrou says:

I’m not 100% sure that the ‘what race are you’ question on applications should be done away with. If we are truly past racism, or are to GET past it, then we need to quit harping on it. Don’t forget it, but don’t harp on it.

                        • rhorho says:

@Froo: That goes to my point of the right
side clinging to examples of failures to create
a prevailing opinion of a program as a whole.
What is the motivation? Destruction of the
                          program. Why? You tell me.

Until very recently, the word “liberal” was
enough to send the lefties scrambling for
cover, for fear of having the label pinned to
them. The right wing machine is efficient.

The same holds true for another term,
“unpatriotic,” which could stand as the
foremost reason, post 9/11, that most
                          Democrats were self-squelched during
the run-up to the “war on terror.”

                        • froofrou says:

I don’t think the program should be done away with, I think it should be changed to actually give equal opportunities that are afforded by the Constitution. The abuses of the system are not numerous, but they are damaging.

                        • froofrou says:

There is no need to hang on to a broken system just because it SHOULD work. If it has such major problems that people are getting ‘paid back’ as opposed to being given simply equal footing, then we need to get a better system. Then you’re just taking the discrimination to the other side.

                        • ubr says:

being a libertarian i would like to see completely double blind application processes… the problem is that it’s hard to conduct an ingterview undera cape with a voice modulator.

                        • froofrou says:

LOL, I don’t mind the interview process being done in person, that’s the only way to really get a handle on how someone is. Although I understand what yu’re saying, in that the bigotry would just wait to come out after meeting the person. I’m a realist. I know that bigotry isnt’ going to go away just because I want it to. But, I’m also on the internet, and I’m allowed to dream :-)

                          a broken system…

See? You’re calling it “broken.” Why?

Another righft tactic, once the false premise
is established, is to take away funding,
running a program into the ground, then
point to the shambles as further proof that
                          it didn’t work.

                        • froofrou says:

I’m calling it broken because of the way it’s been abused. I’m not saying that every case, or even most of them, are like the one that I used, but it happens enough times to make the Constitutional Amendment about equal protection under the law null and void. I’m blanketing here, and I’ll admit it. That doesn’t remove the point.
                          -
What would you do to stop the abuses, without admitting that it’s broken?

                        • slan agat says:

Like the rest of the left side of the aisle, I’ll be very happy when affirmative action is no longer needed. But the deck has been stacked so heavily for so long that eliminating the need is a task of epic proportions. It has to start with equalizing the quality of education opportunities available from early childhood forward, and that means, at minimum, a radical shift in how we fund our public school systems. It also means correcting the gross disparity in the criminal justice system that puts 1 American in 100 in jail – but 1 black male in 15. And that in turn means bringing sanity to our drug policy and decent jobs that pay living wages to our inner cities.

Long story short (too late!), there will be no need for affirmative action when we’ve overhauled society top to bottom.

                        • rhorho says:

It’s a dynamic entity, and modifications have
been made along the way, both to improve
efficacy and to deter fraud. “Work-fare”
instead of “welfare” is one example.

Scrapping the system is not called for here.
It’s not broken, but it’s not perfect. It needs
                          fine-tuning, not a wrecking ball.

Welfare fraud statistics show an overall downward trend in absolute numbers, even while the US population shows a trend of population increase due to immigration and a positive birth rate. According to welfare fraud statistics most work fare programs have been a hopeless boondoggle, more reflective of pork barrel politics than any true commitment to help the economically disadvantaged dig out of their predicament.

Yes, that would be lovely! Still, as you say, the interview bit gets tricky. I’d settle for a process where all applications were totally anonymous up to the point of the interview, because I am quite sure that a lot of people vanish before that who would in fact be more suitable for the job they’re applying for. (People with the wrong sort of name, for instance: Any female name, any “muslim-sounding” name etc.) I am talking about Sweden here, not sure what it’d look like in the US.

                        • PortlandMark says:

I can tell you all, getting a personal interview with an applicant is absolutely necessary for most jobs. Especially in the US, where, increasingly, any available jobs are likely to be in the service sector. I can’t be hiring anyone to work weiht my guests without knowing what kind of personality they have, and what kind of image they project. Maybe for those hypothetical “good jobs” where you are judged on the quality of work you produce, and aren’t required to deal with any coworkers or guests, a blind interview process would work.

Double blind interview…? So you’re saying if I own a company I can’t give my friend a job just because he’s my friend? What the F#*$? What’s the point of owning a business if I can’t help out my friends along the way?
Not to mention, do you really thing a biggot upon selecting an applicant who shows up to work the first day and turns out to be black or muslim or whatever…that biggot isn’t going to simply come up with a reason to let the employee go?

I’ve never found text as sexy as I find yours. The problem with Affirmative Action, in retrospect is twofold:
                          1) It never did what it was supposed to. In the 80′s our gov realized that inner city kids, predominantly minority, were not getting as good of an education as their white suburban counterparts. Thus, they realized that these kids were handicapped in the job market as soon as they graduated high school. AA was designed as a short term solution to decrease the gap until the schools could be brought up to snuff. Problem was, we’ve never brought the inner city schools up to the same standards as the suburban schools. (nor will we ever for a lot of different reasons) So AA kept plugging along. Once again, the stop gap solution became the perm.
                          2) If no one is to be denied employment, housing, etc based on their race, age, faith, class, etc, then they almost must NOT be given employment, housing, ect based upon the same. No, we cannot have our cake and eat it too. AA is as unconstitutional as Jim Crowe laws.
