Dunno where you’re going with that exactly (since we didn’t put anyone on trial from Waco, we really don’t know whether there was any child sexual abuse there or not; I always thought it was just a lame justification for acting like a bunch of jackbooted thugs), but I thought it was interesting that Koresh had already been picked up and questioned as a suspect in a murder case prior to the whole fiasco. He was released for lack of evidence. The sherriff who picked him up had generally complimentary things to say about Koresh; when the reporters asked him what he did differently than the ATF agents (since, you know, the sherriff had been successful in bringing him in), he said he just drove in with a deputy, a warrant, and a single car. Koresh was happy to comply.

I used to be fairly neutral in the whole Israel/Palestinian conflict; it seems to me that neither side has the moral high ground. However, the more I listen to idiots like Sunny Sue, the more I’m starting to see the Arab’s side of things. If Israelis would just realize that one genocide does not justify kicking people out of the homes their ancestors have occupied for hundreds of years, and that maybe the Palestinian people have a right to be a little peeved, maybe we could get something done about setting up some kind of two state solution.

During the Clinton admin, Gore was seen as little more than an automaton. He was characterized as wooden, completely lacking any sort of personality. Of course, this might have been due to his proximity to Bill Clinton, who (love him or hate him) possessed energy and charisma in spades.

Point being, nobody would have been dissuaded from offing Big Dog for fear of a Gore presidency. Gore was a nonentity.

The main church building has been rebuilt and is still there. The three story (in some places) bunker that Koresh built around, on top of, and under the original chapel building isn’t there anymore. The school bus is still there, buried underground. There is a memorial there as well, with a stone for every person who died in the fire (inscribed with the names), including two or three expelled fetuses. There is a fruit tree planted for every single person right in front of the pond, too. It’s pretty far off out of the way, and you have to know how to get out there. It’s not exactly a tourist attraction.

And, yeah, the economy’s been booming for most of the last 8 years. Partially due to a money policy that was far too loose, but that’s a different problem entirely. But please don’t act like the housing bubble burst should be laid at the feed of Bush. It’s silly and makes you look like a twit.
