Just because they all belong to the reptile family doesn’t make them all lizards.
Actually, Reptiles is not a valid taxonomic category anyway. It includes too many subgroups (mammalia, aves, archosauria, etc) to place it in one group. Even if it were polyphyletic, snakes and lizards (lepidosauria i think?) are in diffferent subtaxa.

Evolutionary biology was a while ago but my understanding was that reptiles contains
Lizards
Snakes
Crocs and
Turtles
And depending on who you talk to, birds.
Mammals and amphibians are in different categories.. and then the fishy things have a category too. I did some poking on the internet and it seems to agree with me. [LINK] The site does say that Reptiles is becoming and invalid category, but not yet.

Snakes and lizards are both in the subclass (I believe that is the proper grouping) Squamata, but snakes are in Order Serpentes. I could be wrong about exactly which grouping they are in (Maybe Order Squamata and Suborder Serpentes as opposed to Subclass and Order), but they are more closely related than say turtles and lizards. Nonetheless, a snake is still not a lizard. And no, birds and mammals are not included in the Class Reptilia, but both evolved separately from it.

the only one I can think of with venomous spit is the komodo dragon, but they just sort of…drool on you.
Komodo Dragons are not venomous. So far scientists have only discovered two: the Gila Monster and the Mexican Beaded Lizard. I think we need to alert them to this Frilled Pope Lizdard.

Komodo dragons have been studied and their bites have symptoms akin to venom. Bites to the fingers cause rapid swelling and shooting pain to the elbow. But i was talking about the bacterial spit, which will infect and kill prey over a period, like venom for a spider will digest something for it, or destroy tissue for a snake. But yes that isn’t an actual venom.

Looking into it more. what was recently discovered (2005 i think) is that lizards and snakes likely have a venomous ancestor and snakes and gila monsters and such kept the vemon delivery parts while others did not, but komodo dragons, monitor lizards and others do in fact have venom
Actually if I remember right when I did my research on them, they weren’t venomous but they are immune to septicemia which is carried in their bite. This gets there because of their unsavory diet of carrion. So they bite their victim and without medical attention, it dies from the disease within a couple days, in which case the Komodo dragon comes back around to finish it off.
If you are saying they are venomous, I will be a jerk and ask for a source because I remember the study I did so if I am wrong, I want to see the proof for my own sanity sake. I am very fond of the Varanid lizard family and like to keep my facts straight.

I am a bit distracted so I may be misinterpretting this stuff in which case I will gladly back down, but i do believe they do have venom, it simply is not…as functional as say a cobra’s venom as they use the saliva infection to just wander and eat the thing later.

I recall, the bacteria in their mouth comes from digesting rotting meat, I don’t believe that they produce it themselves, I thought it was diet dependent. The bite wounds often turn gangrenous because of this bacteria.
Could be wrong, no time to look it up right now.

Do venom toxins = venom? Since the article is making the distinction, I would tend to say no, but then again I’m not a … lizardologist. And certainly not a Venomous Lizardologist. I just grew up in the southwest with these stupid things and had Venomous Things Not to Touch 101 all the way through high school.
However, I believe we can all agree that whether there are two species or several species… The Frilled Pope Lizard is venomous and needs to be put on the national watch list.

I listened to a speech he gave once and it really turned my life around. I was going to run away from something but didn’t because he’s so full of hope and so kind and gentle and really seems like a nice person and he said some very encouraging things. He’s really lovable and uplifting.
