    Hey, Bill Cosby couldn’t dance either. . . . .

  2. us says:

I wonder why we don’t hear about a president visiting a talk show host who is a liberal as “the President visited the talk show of liberal host Ellen”, but we do hear of a president visiting a talk show host who is a conservative as “the President visited the talk show of conservative host Bill O’Rilley”

please make your point less convoluted.

I read that five times, and it still doesn’t make sense. You might want to try proof reading before you click the ‘add comment’ next time. If it doesn’t make sense to you, I can guarantee the rest of us won’t get it either.

I shall attempt to answer. It’s a simple question of alignment. If a liberal president visits a liberal talk show, there’s no real reason to bring up the alignments because, since they are in harmony, nothing of interest is likely to arise.

In the case where a liberal president visits a conservative talk show, or vice versa, there are likely to be sparks struck from the disharmony of alignment. Thus it is meritorious to highlight that disharmony in advance, the better to draw viewers or listeners.

      • froofrou says:

Has any Conservative president visited Jon Stewart’s show? I can’t remember. And if they did, was it billed as “President visits popular liberal comedy show ‘The Daily Show’”? You can substitute any known conservative name for ‘president’ if you wish.

        • n8 says:

I think the only conservative president to exist concurrently with the Daily Show would have been G-Dub, and he wasn’t exactly known for hitting the talk show circuit. Would’ve been hilarious though… I’m sure Stewart would’ve sold his firstborn for a shot at him.

          • If you go back and look at presidential candidates, though, John McCain’s been on the Daily Show 11 times and Mike Huckabee 3 times (he’s done Colbert, too). Romney doesn’t seem to have been on. Ron Paul’s done Daily Show and Colbert once each. Bush hasn’t (at least not yet) but who knows, he could yet turn up.

            • froofrou says:

Ok, so we’ve got John McCain, Huckabee, and Ron Paul. Were any of them billed as being on “popular liberal talk show (comedy show, whatever) ‘The Daily Show’”? I think that may be his point. There is a big deal made whenever anyone (conservative or liberal) goes to Fox News about the fact that Fox and its pundits are conservative, but there is almost no mention of the fact that John Stewart and the like are so very, very liberal :-) Even Letterman, Leno, and O’Brian could fall under than label, though it’s more of a stretch.

              • rhohro says:

You’re treating the situation as though all things are equal.
They aren’t. Comedy shows are not news shows, period.
Comedy/talk shows do not go into serious issues with guests.

Fox News, despite its claims of being “fair and balanced,”
isn’t. Seriously claiming otherwise requires either stupidity,
extreme naivete, batshirt craziness, or a combination of
                the three.

                Apples and oranges

                • froofrou says:

Ok, let’s throw Franken and Air American into the mix. How is it billed when conservatives are on that station, if they ever are?

                  • rhohro says:

Let’s see…What do you call it when one person doesn’t
address the issue at hand, but throws something else
                    into an argument…?

                    It’s red something, I believe…

Rachel Maddow had her first conservative guest EVER
this past week, and iirc it was a GOP governor. Not
many conservative politicians grace liberal media with
their appearances, certainly. Curious, really, because,
unlike FOX, guests aren’t met with a panel of people
                    with the opposite viewpoint.

Please let me know what you find about conservatives
visiting Al Franken on his show…
                    viewpoint.

                    • froofrou says:

Ok, let me withdraw the Al Franken argument and go with your MSNBC argument, since they bill themselves as the ‘Anti-Fox’. Was it billed as ‘conservative goes to liberal talk show’ or ‘conservative goes to liberal news show’, or was it ‘conservative goes to MSNBC’? And don’t try the argument that ‘MSNBC is known as liberal, so that counts’. If that were true, then Fox wouldn’t need it pointed out that they were conservative.

                      • rhohro says:

I think the difference in format speaks for itself,
as well as the obvious character flaws found too
easily in the likes of Bill-O. Remember what he
did to Jon Stewart, who isn’t even a politician?

Wanna give me a site for any instance of
MSNBC billing itself the way you claim?

I think your ears perk up at opportune moments.
I watch/read more of my fair share of news from
the spectrum, and haven’t made note of any
disparity, beyond the fact that FOX will treat
guests quite differently, as its goal is to tear
                        opposing viewpoints asunder.

If you have a chance, read the Rachel Maddow
transcript from the show with the GOP governor
she had as a guest (Tuesday, I believe), and
try to imagine FOX handling a liberal guest with
                        as much grace.

                    • someguy says:

You are being disingenuous. NONE of the liberal news media people are EVER labelled as liberal. Did ANYONE see the headline, “Liberal news anchor Katie Couric interviews VP nom Sarah Palin”? No. But that is, in fact, exactly what happened. Libs OWN the media. Period. Still, when conservatives get fair share air time, viewers/listeners flock to it. For you to imply that the scales of media airtime aren’t HEAVILY weighted toward liberals is blatantly insincere. Conservatives are fighting uphill with sticks and knives when it comes to TV coverage. Please just admit you are in the driver’s seat of a bulldozer so we can continue with intelligent and HONEST conversation.

                  • PortlandMark says:

Depending on the show, conservatives appear on Air America quite often. Thom Hartmann has conservative pundits several times daily, usually. Ed Schultz gets some very well known republicans, and treats them rather well. Rachel Maddow did quite often as well, until she quit radio to do tv full time.

          • Jane St.Clair says:

I remember he had John Kerry on in 2004 and after that he was publicaly begging GW to come on too.

        • PortlandMark says:

John McCain made several visits to the Daily Show. Before he decided to be a George Bush Neocon Conservative, he had a good chance to win over the liberal part of the country.

          Stupid George Bush. :)

    • PortlandMark says:

While Ellen is most certainly at least socially liberal, her show doesn’t deal with politics much. Big difference from your hero BillO, who makes his whole show about how much liberals “hate America”.

    • weird says:

probably has something to do with the fact that Ellen’s talk is more generalized, light-hearted, and not all about politics.

I’m sure if he appeared on Olbermann or Maddow the designation would be made.

  3. Stereotype police says:

    OMFG!!11!!! The trauma!
Why are you all allowing this? Where’s the outrage! This is a negative racial stereotyope! Why isn’t everybody coming to his defence!
    NOES!! It’s too soon!

  4. Uncle Fester says:

    My take in link…

Stolen from ‘Amazon Women on the Moon’ one of the great classics of 20th Century cinema…

  6. Schmoe says:

How did this photo get out? Hey look! Ellen HAS a bustline!

  7. Schmoe says:

Who cares? Not I. Remember when she was funny?

  8. Mo says:

    LOL

this site stays true to its name.

  9. philip says:

If you look at all the captions made, you’ll see one half making jokes about Obama’s awful dance skills, and the other half saying he’s got awesome dance skills. :S

  10. ICDK says:

So, if it is common knowledge the president is half white, why do the blacks consider him “their” president? With the exception of his skin, he’s whiter than most white folks I know.

    I’m just sayin’…

    • Mayken says:

It’s actually quite a common thing for the African American community to consider offspring of interracial unions to be AA. One sees this same belief within the Indian (Native America) and Native Hawaiian communities as well. It’s been a while since I studied these communities and this particular phenomena but I recall it being related to having been a conquered people e.g. AAs and slavery and well… need I actually say more about Indians and Hawaiians?

    • PortlandMark says:

I submit that anyone who has to be concerned that a traffic stop might turn into a beating or worse, just because they don’t look 100% pure Northern European, is actually a full blooded member of the minority group they look like.

As an example, I link to the story of the poor black kid killed by police on the BART on New Years Day.

  11. PeachyKat says:

He can trace back to the Emerald Isle, he can. Come and have a pint then, laddie?

    • Mayken says:

Yes, and I hear from some buddies in Ireland that he is nearly as popular there as Kennedy was. A buddy in Dublin says they have Obama’s pic up next to JFK’s in his local pub.
I think that is too awesome!

      • PeachyKat says:

Well, the paternal side of my family is Irish-American conservative Catholic, which means some members of our family find his pro-choice views disconcerting…and we also find the fact that part of his family’s from Ireland also prideful, because he he is very sensible! So a lot of us don’t know what to think. Our family always plays “moral roulette” around the elections…
