I promised myself that I’d stay out of the previous discussion (from which this thread is linked) for all of the reasons I’m glad I did. I’ve had all of those discussions countless times and rarely have I seen anyone with enough intelligence to allow themselves to step out of their protective garb of religiosity long enough to understand there are other perspectives than their flavor of the Christian ones. Ok, I want to make two points:
.
a. As Fester has said, American Indian culture not only accepted but in many cases revered gay men.
b. SEA cultures such ans Hawaiian and Polynesian, Tahitian, Tongan, Samoan also had their ‘Mahu’ which were treated in very similar ways to the Ameican Indian. Mahus ranged from:
- being considered a ‘third sex’ and could include any man who desired to and therefore did perform the traditional female duties in the household, to
- males that were raised by their families to be the (marriage) partners of the males in the royal family.

Most cultures seem to have a history of accepting what we consider to be ‘alternative’ sexual and emotional ties amongst their people. It seems that most of the shunning of that culture begins where the Abrahamic religions come into into their world.

Second point:
Fester, you were looking for something worse than crucification? You don’t have to look any further than your own Edward I. Drawing and Quartering, when done properly has got to be right up there with the most tortuous methods known to man.

Interesting — obviously cultural anthropology’s not my strong point, so I’m grateful for the perspective! I’d like to think that eventually homophobia will go the way of discrimination against lefthandedness — that used to be considered a sign of evil/sin as well, right? Now (at least in our culture) it’s accepted that while most people are right-dominant, some are born left-dominant, and a lucky few are ambidextrous…which seems a decent comparison to the breakdown of sexual preference.

As a caveat: one has to remeber that most Scholars have the same bias…
In the case of Indian (Southern Asian) history, the bony claw of Christian thought is so strong that a lot of the India traditions were re-dated to be after the 6000 year cut off (yes, that’s the Creation date). We’re only just shaking this out of the Western view of Indian archaeology, where good Indian work is pretty much revolutionising the dating scheme of the old Indus Valley…

American Indian was and is pretty tolerant.
Pre-Raj, Pre-Murghal The broad spectrum of Indian cultures were pretty egalitarian.
The Mongols didn’t care
The Northern European Tribes didn’t care
Chinese only cared if you didn’t have a son before you went gay.
Greeks were almost enthusiastic, as were the Egyptians…
MesoAmerican cultures I don’t know that much about, bearing in mind the Spanish wiped them out before anyone knew anything for certain…
Basically, any where that had limited exposure to the Abrahamic religions were pretty laid back.

Bringing a somewhat tangential discussion over from a painfully long and slow-loading lol to one that generated little discussion:

I think you may have a point regarding the societal roots of homophobia in the cultures with traditions rooted in the Abrahamic religions, even among those who would say their disdain had no religious basis — I’d like to see a comparison of attitudes in other cultures. Any suggestions?

I find it especially entertaining when the butthurt use words that they don’t understand. Many called Bush “selected” due to the actions of the supreme court in 2001. I’m having trouble seeing any parallel to Obama’s electoral landslide, unless Susan is admitting that Obama was the electorate’s “selection.”

With all due respect to you and your deceased hero brother, I think you need to look up the definition of “disrespect”. While we all grieve for our injured, maimed, and killed soldiers, (and marines, and airmen, and navy ratings), joking that we might find a better way to solve that conflict is not disrespectful.

Disrespectful would be: “I think you are just a care troll pretending to have lost family in Iraq. You’re probably just Evil Pundit returned in one of his many sock puppets.”
