i was throwing out bait for people to jump on. so, thanks for falling for it. my entire argument above is about how the DOW and politics do not show one anything one way or the other.
i did not refer to the DOW as an economic indicator as it really is an investor confidence indicator more than anything…

and your graph is complete hogwash too. if i listened to the ny times for financial news i’d be living in a cardboard box under the freeway. have you ever
heard of how statistics can be completely misleading? the information y u’ve posted all depends on when exactly they start looking at the numbers. do you start counting when bush got elected? when bush entered office? do you include some sort of adjustment for the 9/11 attacks? did you adjust clinton’s numbers to reflect the boom of the .com industry? does the president have more sway than the legislature when it comes to the economy?
let’s put it this way: with the data at hand i could completely skew the results any way i felt like…

My family business really is just that. I may sound sentimental and schmaltzy; that prospect does not offend me. Our employees are indeed our friends, and I’m damn grateful to have that kind of relationship with the people who are working for us. The down side is times like this. We’ve laid-off five people (families) for the winter; I’m really hoping we can bring them back this spring.
I may sound greedy, and frankly I don’t care, but if we have to go into further debt with a stimulus package I damn sure hope our state gets enough money so we can get back to work on capital projects and keep people employed.

Your stories sound designed to hammer home a point about the hard, hard life of the small business owner. They read like a Communications major’s first year paper on propaganda. I have an idea, why not sell your stories to the Lifetime Television Network? You could probably make bank with that level of schmaltz. The serendipitous ending to the story, where you both happen to post to the same message board on the same day and become bestest buds, really seals the deal. It sounds like you have such a lovely work ‘family,’ with you and yours as the Patriarchal Daddy Figures helping out the poor benighted savages who wouldn’t know how to wipe their bums without you. Ah, the White Man’s Burden, it must be so hard. That’s why you deserve the lion’s share of the benefits of those benighted savages’ work. But you are lucky to be in the line of work you claim to be, our infrastructure is crumbling and you are about to be invited to sup at the government trough. Lucky for you Obama was elected and is taking concrete steps (haha) to kickstart the economy. If it was McCain, ALL your contracts with the government would be canceled, YOU would continue to be stuck with your employees healthcare costs, and your businesses would all fail. As you don’t agree with ney, can I assume you are, like most small business owners, a supporter of Obama?

No, we’re not in construction, and I have no idea what ney’s business is, but my family has asphalt/paving, concrete, rock crushing and trucking/heavy hauling companies. Our companies currently support 23 families. I say “our” and “mine” because it’s family-owned.
No money=no building=no business. Our state and federal contracts have dried up, since even they are in a freeze. We (as an entity) ARE hurting that badly, and there’s no point playing on anybody’s sympathies — we have to do what we have to do, period. These economic times have forced each of you to make choices regarding your spending (gas or groceries is one I hear a lot) and small businesses are in the same boat.
My family will do just fine, but the families who count on our business to remain solvent are the ones who will end up on the unemployment line. Knowing (and caring about) their personal stories is just a natural by-product of working closely together in small companies. Specific incidences: “Thomas” had his arm partially torn off in a four-wheeler accident; the re-attached limb is questionable at this point; “Geoff” has four boys (all under the age of six) and his wife “Kristi” is annoyed because she desperately wanted a daughter; “Cam’s” dad’s widow Sylvie is spiraling into a depression and we are concerned she will follow him within the next six months; “Sharry” in my children’s NaNa (godmother) and has been our receptionist since the asphalt business opened and we want to keep her employed for the next year to make sure she receives all the benefits she’s earned; “Trina” kept my family running when my son had bacterial pneumonia and was in the hospital getting IV antibiotics for two weeks.
You may note I didn’t agree with ney’s lambasting of Obama, nor did I even reference his earlier discussion. I simpy empathized with his dilemma. No matter how much anyone tries to deny it, small businesses are indeed suffering.
As I said earlier, I am not in the position to know all the financial details. I married into the companies, and thus am not a decision-making partner, so I can’t really give you “data” about our long-term planning. I do know we had planned to expand into the neighboring county and were in the process of purchasing another pit and more paving equipment, but naturally that’s on hold at this point.
I hope this clarifies my points for you, Seth. If not, I really feel badly that life has dealt you such an unpleasant hand that you had no choice but to harden your heart and become such a cynic.

i almost felt sorry for them till the sock thing. I thought they may have one of those low risk things, the widow orphan fund whatevers. my grandparents did that when i was born and…technically they did lose money, but i’m not sure what kind of person pulls money out of that when they think the economy is hurting…then they’ve really lost money.
