YES!!!!!! I was just thinking that!!! God, the only reason I came to the comment portion was to see if anyone picked up on it, and I had been severely disappointed so far. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

And it’s especially apt because I think Obama’s a lot like Adlai II. Intellectual, liberal, a good speaker, humorous (albeit in an often dry way), running against a military man . . . yay parallelism! Though Obama didn’t lose horribly. Which is a good thing.

Well, if you believe that CO2 is a major greenhouse gas, then basically you’re allowing people to pay to pollute. If you don’t, it’s basically just a way to choke industry and limit production. We already have a perfectly good carbon-neutral energy source-it’s called nuclear power.

Except that 95% of us won’t have lower taxes if he succeeds w/this Cap n’ Trade scheme. And I still think letting everyone keep more of their money would benefit the economy as a whole. I’d prefer my employer not get taxed into oblivion, quite frankly. There’s also the issue that the economy has changed radically in the last 80 years.

I did not know that, VG-huh…now I have re-evaluate my whole position on that vaccine. Granted, I take what the WHO says with a grain of salt half the time, but even if their figures are inflated by 50%, that’s still quite noteable. I know that at least one of the strains isn’t that common, but perhaps the statistic in question is an amalgamation of statistics.

I’m familiar enough with Media Matters to know how that spin things, often using opinion statements to say a given commentator lied. Or, they take small quotes out a much larger monologue and try to make it look like something it’s not (see the recent “stupid Mexicans” flap). Trying to address their chicanery is, quite frankly, below me. However, if someone were to link to a specific story, I could probably go to work on it pretty well.

Actually, Hoover was big on spending, taxation, and protectionism. But, since you asked, how about dropping taxes on businesses and families, but businesses have money to pay employees and citizens have money to dump into the industries? The free market doesn’t need fixing, Fester. It needs to be left alone to correct itself. Government intervention has never, to my knowledge, improved things. Your assertion that monopolies will be created is silly-if, for instance, GM fails, Ford, Chrysler, and the various international companies will pick up slack. As it stands now, we’re headed for the gloriousness that is the English auto sector, fi we keep propping up failing companies this way.

As far as the comparisons to Mao and Hilter, it is not my fault that Obama resembles a larval dictator. I don’t know if he’s actually gonna try to grab power, but I think he needs to be watched just as closely as GWB and the Patriot act were. I would think you, Captain Cynicism himself, would appreciate that.

That ‘sexually transmitted’ cervical cancer? A major World health organization study, worldwide, tested women who had only had ONE sexual partner. 50% of those women already had the virus that causes cervical cancer. And that same virus has been found to cause 50% of all oral and throat cancers (the other 1/2 are caused by smoking/chewing tobacco). If I had children, I would have any daughter AND son vaccinated, at age 8 or 10. I would hope that they would abstain from sex until at least the late teens (and heaven forbid, that they would never be sexually abused) , but wouldn’t want to bet their future health on it–I’ve seen too many people die from or be disfigured by cancer for that!

I’m not religous, and I’m bigoted against idiocy and evil, both of which are rife among fundamentalists of most stripes. As to your question, it’s called hermeneutics, and context is essential. Immediate context, historical context, context within the rest of the texts, grammatical context, who wrote it, why it was written, what the original language entails, and so on and so forth. That’s what “studying” the bible involves. {shrug} If that is what passes for entertainment to you, um…well, enjoy it, I guess.
