  1. Danbala says:

    Hah!
    Good caption!

  2. Rafiq of the many says:

I hope this scumbag gets his in prison. I also hope his wife leads a desperate, lonely and penniless existence from here until the end of her days.

    • The Steve says:

Actually I kinda hope his wife starts banging all of his friends and sending the pictures to his prison cell.

      • slan agat says:

I think Rafiq’s idea is that Ruth was in on it. I’m not sure he isn’t right.

        • The Steve says:

In which case I hope she gets tossed in the clink too! He seems like the type of guy who would want to brag about the ingenious nature of his scheme to his wife. If she knew about it, then I agree. I hope she spends the rest of her life eating oatmeal and ramen noodles in trailer park.

          • rhorho says:

She was bound to be aware, on some level. IMO, the simplest way to
establish some culpability is to subpoena her work product. She was
paid to be a bookkeeper, so, if she was purely innocent, there should
be some documents to offer up as proof, right?

Actually, it would be fun to see her on the witness stand, being asked
to recite the accounting equation. (Yes, fat chance, but I have vivid
            daydreams.)

          • slan agat says:

Bernie took a no-rec plea awfully early in the process as these things go. No recommendation on sentencing must mean no agreement to cooperate with investigators. That means Bernie’s taking the fall for the family and if prosecutors want to nail the wife and kids to get some part of the money back, they’re goign to have to do it the hard way.

A 150 year sentence is the same as a 10 year sentence when you’re 70, after all.

        • rhorho says:

It may be hard to find out, but if she’s decent, she will voluntarily
surrender the property to help the victims. After the Enron collapse, I
remember wondering how his widow could keep everything, and still
hold her head up. (She managed.)

    • Seth says:

Is it the man, or is it the system? Is it him, or is it us? We idolize money in America. We idolize the rich and powerful. It’s all wink-wink, nudge-nudge, everyone’s cheating so why shouldn’t I? The only real crime is getting caught. The results of our system are sickening, but so are the results of eating feces. If we want results other than an unending string of Bernie Madoffs and Ken Lays, we need a different system. One that rewards cooperation, fairness, reciprocity, and sharing rather than greed, materialism, selfishness and domination.

      • Danbala says:

I agree with you – and it’s far from only America. I think that’s why I really liked this lol – it went beyond “hur hur Madoff’s an arse” and brought AIG into it, indicating the existence of a bigger picture.
        .
(And yeah, I realise that you’re responding to Rafiq’s post, not the lol itself.)

        • Thanks, Danbala — not to overanalyze my own caption too much, but the inspiration was the counterpoint of Madoff’s guilty plea to crimes motivated by his own greed to the detriment of others with the staggering bonuses being accepted by AIG execs when their divisions were failing…to the detriment of many of us. And of course they aren’t going to prison, so old Bernie would have been better off just “working the system” like they did.

          • The Steve says:

I got the cross-reference. Although I’m pretty pleased to see that the Obama administration is going to be digging through the pockets of the AIG execs to ‘gimme my money back!’

            • eddiepscetti says:

I read in the news here yesterday that the government (in Australia for those that don’t know) is talking about passing a law that will limit how much execs can get when leaving a company with a golden handshake. At the moment, most of these guys leave with 7 times their base pay, and the government wants to limit that to 12 months. And, for what it’s worth, we have our own AIG problems, which the government is trying to address, but on a much smaller scale than the U.S.

  3. yasoup says:

Well, Houston had a “good” run as being known as the former home of the biggest jerkwad (Ken Lay), but now we can go back to being known for our crappy Lightrail and awesome museums.

    • rhorho says:

Does Tom DeLay still live in Sugarland? (I couldn’t find information in the Wiki article about where he lives now.)

  4. Kinson says:

Minnesota had the title for a week.

  5. rhorho says:

    YAY DISS!!! *happy silly dance*

    Great LOL and congratulations! :D

  6. Nicely done. Congrats!

  7. rich says:

He looks like magneto. and the reflection looks like magneto’s helmet

  8. I love it… Now watch it be a paraphrasing of my eulogy because Murphy’s Law hates me.

  9. Musicmom870 says:

Brilliant. I think I’ll save that for the next time I’m having a bad day. DeLay deserves his figurative roasting-on-a-spit, he earned every bit of it.

  10. Matt Taibbi is hilarious, he’s a contributing editor for Rolling Stone and he’s got a couple of books out, compilations of his articles. The DeLay piece was published in “Smells Like Dead Elephants,” well worth the read if you like his style. :)
