Although, Hubby did teach me a neat trick to get rid of them. If you can get two mounds that aren’t connected underground, stir them up and make them super mad with a shovel, then dump a shovel-full of one mound on top of the other, the intruder ants will go down and kill the queen. Voila, no more ant mound!

my mom almost killed my dog when she dug up the second rhododendron… the first one she thought was a fluke but the second she was not so happy about. since then we planted a briar bush in that location. it’s lasted 4 years now!
our front yard is nice and pretty green from the clover, the backyard is brown with random clumps of grass sticking up. we have .12 acres including driveway, front yard, house, backyard, detached garage… and also 100+ pounds of dogs. so the backyard is their domain to destroy and such. we sometimes plant flowers in the back garden beds but tend to go with “dog-resistant” types there. the front garden has hostas, roses, lillies, crocuses, arbovitae and my dad usually insists on putting in pansies and stuff like that. on the back porch we always have a few planters with fresh herbs – although last year the little dog ate all the parsley one afternoon. didn’t touch the mint or basil or oregano… just the parsley.
