For example, the male Adelie penguin takes a pebble to a potential mate–a plain pebble like you might find in your driveway. The quality of the pebble determines if she stays with him. How many females (now, this is just a humorous “generalization!) would really feel flattered by a male who gave a ring set with a gray rock?
Actually the analogy is very solid, you’re just being too literal. The penguin attracts it mate with an acceptable trinket. Sounds like a wedding proposal to me. Human males are known to bring a trinket in the form of a shiny stone to a potential mate. If she finds the trinket acceptable, it increases his chances of success with her.
Pretty damn close to how we are before you bring in the complexity of human emotion and even then, it isn’t that far off. Give yourself more credit for the analogy.

With birds, “prettier” is a human perception. Usually “prettier” means “brighter colored.” The male Cardinal is brighter, because part of his job is to distract predators away from the nest where his better camouflaged mate is brooding. In short, he’s brightly colored because he’s expendable.
Conversely, doves, who mate for life, show no great difference in plume coloration. Both parents care for the young together.
