    Ahhh…the old carpenter’s saying.

Q: How can you tell if lesbian carpenters built your house?
A: All tongue-in-groove, with no studs.
    +

  2. me says:

It’s the C. Montgomery Burns Slant Drilling Company.

  3. A.M. says:

IIRC, this is BP’s oil platform called “Thunder Horse”. It got damaged by hurricane Dennis only to be struck by Katrina later on in the year. I think it is in production but not quite sure. (yeah, i work in the offshore oil industry :p)

    • Rafael says:

me too, and this is from brazil!

      • EtymologicalDisaster says:

No, the ‘Horse is about 120 miles off the Louisiana coastline in the Gulf of Mexico. I worked on it for a while shortly following the events in this pic.

      • wired says:

This is not from Brazil. The P36 on the Roncador field in Brazil that sank back in 2001 only had a single activity derrick and was a modified deep water semi. The one in the picture has a dual activity derrick rather like the Thunder Horse.

    • John... says:

It is indeed Thunder Horse — after Hurricane Dennis. (It took on water due to a pipe that had been installed incorrect — as opposed to any hull damage or anything.) They had it righted within a week. It was then hit by Katrina, but not damaged by it.

It took them three years to get it operational again though — but, yes, it is indeed in production (for almost a year now).

      – John…

      • minerva146 says:

The real question then, is why it’s called Thunder Horse. I say it must be because of Dethklock, the most powerful force in the universe.

        • lowly grunt says:

Yes, why Thunder Horse? That name implies movement and well, thunder. All I see here is sink and fail.

          • John... says:

It’s just a name — likely because “Thunder Horse” sounded huge — and this is the largest platform of its kind on the planet. Other names of other BP platforms/projects include “Mad Dog”, “Atlantis”, and “Marlin” — although, those are all actually the names of the fields/projects, not the platforms themselves.

In any case, the fact that Thunder Horse survived two hurricanes within two months time with NO hull damage makes it a massive win to me. The fact that it temporarily sank on one side was a simple plumbing fail. When two hurricanes hit something like that and it doesn’t get destroy or fall into the depths, I’d call it a win. heh.

            • minerva146 says:

Maybe the Dethklok song got ITS name from this oil rig.

            • Tim says:

It was partially a plumbing fail and partially an operator error. Someone closed the wrong set of valves, making the deck take on water. Had the proper valves been closed when the rig was evacuated, it would have been fine. When people went back out to the rig, it was within a few degrees of sinking. This after the rig had been held hostage by the fab yard in Korea, because BP wouldn’t pay its bills on the project.

Between this and the Texas City incident, they don’t exactly have the best track record in the industry for safety.

“Does this look level to you?”
    -
“A little more to the right…”

    • mothergoose says:

      “Your right, or my right?”

      • The Steve says:

You’re a woman, so it must be your right. (and my wrong)

        • mothergoose says:

I like how you think…you must be one of the “trained” men…

          • *isn’t trained but clever enough to know when I am wrong, stubborn enough to hold my ground when I’m right, wise enough to know when to compromise, and finally human enough to realize that I am not perfectly clever, stubborn, or wise.*

I never did like the idea of trained… /random

          • Mr.Wholesome says:

You mean he’s happily married? . . . Me too.

          • The Steve says:

I’m a bachelor…oddly enough. I don’t mind being wrong if it means I get to continue to snuggle with the owner of the boobies.

            • Double edged sword, you think you are pleasing them but really you are just showing them somebody they can be comfortable with while they look for somebody with backbone.

Not saying you should be a jerk, if you’re wrong, own up to it. But if you aren’t wrong, letting them believe a lie for the sake of ego is just admitting they are shallow. If they are pleased with this, then you won’t be with them long anyway unless you will inevitably learn to hate them.

Unfortunately, this sounds a lot more bitter than I prefer but I currently can’t think of a way to soften it up.

              • Jane St.Clair says:

                Naw, you sound sensible. :)

                • I did have a nasty grammar fail though with the “unless you will inevitable” part though. :/ Had two sentences in my hand and a twisted bastard love child came out.

Thanks though, I try to make sense. When going over the failed marriages and relationships I have seen in my family and friends, I realize that lack of compromise was one of the biggest issues. There was either placation of one or both parties without any kind of resolution found, so eventually things reached a breaking point with hard feelings and sometimes kids left in the middle.

However, some of it was just that some people are jerks and thus nobody sane can live with them.

Damn, I think I need to water down my seriousness before people get the wrong idea and not realize how annoyingly redundant my posts can be.

Here is a response for the ball licking thread in the quickly getting too big Fresh Idea lol in response to respecting you.

“No but my undercarriage could use a fine bit of polishing and you need a full body massage, starting with your feet and working my way up til I am nibbling on your neck…”

                  Too much?

                  • *two sentences in my HEAD not hand

                    Damn typo demons. WANGNAN SMASH!!!

                  • Jane St.Clair says:

Too much? Naw, just right. ;)
Also I agree with you on the concept of she doesn’t respect you if you constantly tell her she’s right. Girls DO like nice guys, but not doormats, and I’m enough of a raving b*tch sometimes that for my own sake as much as everyone elses I need to be told when I’m over the line.

                    • And oddly enough, letting someone be “right” all the time I think actually indicates a lack of respect for them as it implies that what they think or believe is inconsequential. There’s a lot to be said for respecting each other enough to let the small & stupid stuff go but standing your ground on the bigger stuff. And just working it out…nobody’s right all the time.

                      • Precisely, either you’re a doormat or you don’t care what they think because it doesn’t matter if you do that. Neither are healthy. *bites Diss*

                      • Naoyusimi says:

” . . . indicates a lack of respect for them as it implies that what they think or believe is inconsequential.”
Yep, it’s patronizing (I always imagine a man bending over patting a little girl no the head: “There, there. ::patpatpat:: It’s OK.”
Makes me want to slash and kill. OOps, did I say that out loud?

                    • The funny thing is that I tend to get along with girls emotionally more than guys. So I tend to end up in an honorary “girlfriend” status with a lot of people so I tried to pick up on a lot of things for when I decided to actually make a move.

And yes, anybody worth a damn appreciates somebody to keep them in line. Even when they are a sex crazed pervert with a goofy username with alternating forms of high and low ego. ;)

The magic trick is to let the woman know she is over the line without being an ass or embarassing her. They tend not to think highly of that.

        • HairySexyTroll says:

…and your measurement of sixxxxxxxxxxxxx inches.
          not mine.

  7. Frostbyte says:

It is BP’s Thunderhorse, I went out there after this to help repair the rig. Everything electronic had to be replaced even down to the power and control cables running all over the place.

  8. va_cat_mom says:

Michael Moore visits an off-shore drilling operation.

  9. Sleepykitsune says:

    Ok… so I guess it isn’t the Zombie Titanic…

Weird seeing this picture on Day 64 after 11 people died on the Deepwater Horizon.
