I can’t speak for everyone but, as a Christian, I believe the Bible to be God’s word. I don’t believe it to be the fourth part of the trinity or anything. We’re seeing “through a glass, darkly” and I think the Bible is as close as we get to seeing clearly. There will always difficulties and differences in reading and understanding the bible but I’m inclined to say “close enough.”
As for the OT being optional… If it’s good enough for the son of God, it’s good enough fo us. The NT is a natural progression of the OT. The OT is about God’s way for us to live & judgement when we won’t live that way. The NT is about mercy & escape from that judgement when it comes.
Someone mentioned an eye for an eye/ turn the other cheek. An eye for an eye was justice with a limit on vengeance, dead fair. Turn the other cheek is allowing someone who wrongs you mercy…

I’ve always found attitudes toward the OT hard to wrap my head around. If you’re a christian and believe that, to some degree, the bible is God’s word or law or at least His sound advice, how can you gloss over the OT? I am aware of the importance of context and other significant factors, it just always comes across as ‘this half’s kinda optional really’, which I don’t get at all.

I hope you know, Froo, that I think you’re an neat lady, and I hope you don’t take too personally the fact that I needle you about this stuff. That said, I always thought that the last days of Christ were meant to be an example to Christians about how he expected them to live, and to die. He didn’t strike down the Roman soldiers that came to take him away, and even healed one who was attacked by his followers. He had the power to escape his fate at any time (well, if He was really divine, which I doubt but will stipulate for the sake of argument), and chose, instead, to show his followers for all time how he expects them to deal with “those who transgress against” them.

Personally, that doesn’t work for me, but finding out that it didn’t work for those who kept pushing religion on me was one of many factors that helped form the opinion of Christianity that I have today.

No. That’s a common misinterpretation by people who do. The church he was writing that letter to was in Athens (I think….I’m having to do this by memory), and was entirely peopled by former temple prostitutes. Well, not entirely, but the women in the church were not exactly known for decorum. What that letter says is that for the church to be able to prosper, the women need to quit disrupting and actually let the church get some work done instead of trying to run the church like a pagan temple. Paul was actually pretty progressive with women for the times, considering that he had many women missionaries and teachers that he guided.

Now, if you had Teh Ghey, then you might as well jump off the cliff with the pigs, cuz Paul thought you were teh ebil. Personally, I think that’s because Paul was dealing with his own ghey problems. He had an awful lot of male “companions”, and his best friend was a young man named Timothy, who brought him comfort. Hmmmmmm……….

The Old Testament is a squinky subject for a lot of Christians, who misinterpret the Bible as a whole in order to either make a point or judge people without feeling guilty.

Mark, to answer your question, the Lord never spoke specifically about the defense of home and hearth, so that’s one of those grey areas. As a Christian, I can say that I will love you as the Lord has asked me to do, and as I should with a fellow human, but if you break into my house with the intention of robbing or harming my family or myself, then I will deal with the Lord being pissed at me for taking a life later.

OK, I think we can all agree LEV 18:22 is pretty clear:
“thou shalt not lie with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination”
while jesus did do a lot of revising, he was also pretty clear on his position via a vis the law, MATT 5:17:
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them”
The bible has a lot of horiffic things to say; never apologise for them. It says them clearly and unequivocally (my favourite being 2 Kings 2:27, bear time).
If you’re a christian, you have to think long and hard about what these passages mean to you, and if you should really put so much wight behind a book penned by men. Anyone willing to take a selective, context-driven view of the bible will find it a valuable resource of inspirational quotes and sound moral advice, christian or no. Anyone trying to interpret it literally, even if they cope with the rampant contradictions, will be unable to ignore the misguided and plain horribly wrong parts.
For the record, I’m an atheist, and I have no beef with any kind of faith, only with insistence on the superlative value of a rehashed version of something written to further a political agenda.

Also, Turn the other cheek was Jesus saying that he wanted to be slapped as an equal, not slapped dismissively. That would be a history and interpretation fail on your part. You also forgot the parable about Jesus beating people with a length of rope for making a financial mockery of the temple.

The books of the bible that vaguely and possibly don’t even reference gays are those most contended in the first place. Jesus annulled the old covenant making the laws of Leviticus nullified so the two fabrics law doesn’t apply.

As for the thou shalt not kill, you seem to be forgetting the Eye for an Eye bit.

Soooo, I think you need to re-evaluate your knowledge of the bible.

Ooh, good, an opportunity to ask a question that bothers me a lot: how can an evangelical christian, follower of the “Prince of Peace”, *not* believe that using a firearm for defense is wrong? I thought that one was supposed to abhor violence, turn the other cheek, and follow Jesus’ example. When did you guys become so blood thirsty, and how can you say it’s okay to ignore some parts of the Bible (Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not wear clothes of two different cloths) but not others (Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live, hate teh gehs)?

I don’t think antagonising cops is a very bright thing to do, regardless of the standpoints of the cop or the protestor.

You can protest with dignity, or obstinacy, or with dignified obstinacy. This kind of behaviour is staggeringly arrogant, and marks the punk as an immature, more-testosterone-than-brains phuckwit.

Although, if he can actually think, maybe he’s _trying_ to get beat up, and incite a riot, to make the cops look bad. In which case, has he asked all the _other_ protestors if they’re willing to be martyred for the cause?
