I heard a doctor on the radio explaining that the most important way medical masks prevent the spread of H1N1 is by preventing you from touching your mouth with your hands after you touch something (door handle, the pen at the bank, whatever) that some sickie left his flu bugs on.

my doc has been nagging at me for years to get the flu shots and now the pneumonia one too. i think i’m finally going to have to cave in and get this one when it’s available. don’t want to at all, whatsoever, in no uncertain terms, but even though i’ve beat the odds this long and never gotten the flu, in the end, the house always wins. and of all the things i could die from, swine flu ain’t going to be on my death certificate for my descendants to discover.

but seriously, anyone who is in the high risk groups (and you know who you are ) should at least discuss this with your doc when it becomes available.

Usually it’s a sore or scratchy throat or a dry cough. That’s because respiratory infections start in the tissues of the pharynx, since that’s where the germs land first. The fever comes once the immune response gets activated, which may not be for another few hours or even a day after that.

In the late 1970′s I was in New York City for a field trip, a beautiful clear blue day–and if you looked straight up, you could see this brown pall over the sky. And the air smelled like rotten eggs. Thank goodness for catalytic converters and the EPA!

I grew up in the country in Oregon, and used to visit my grandparents in LA back in the 70s and 80s. I was always appalled at how dark and thick the smog was on even “good” days. I think a lot of people today forget how much good the EPA has done for us in the last 30 years.

the thing of it all is, is that this particular strain is a new hybrid including two varieties that hadn’t crossed the animal/human barrier yet, plus the majority of victims seem to not fit the typical flu profile, and it struck at an odd time of year, especially for a new strain.
while it hasn’t done much damage, could you imagine what the consequences would have been if it would have waited to show up in nov or dec? and what is worse, is that it takes 6 months to grow an adequate supply of vaccines for just the high risk population.
all in all, this had the potential for another 1918 flu pandemic. so overreacting? no, being prepared for the worst and then not needing it; instead of head in the sand and getting it in the @ss.

Well, since it was “Swine flu” the Rector was more like “ZOMG! I’m so sorry! Are you okay now? Sorry to drag you up here…” Also, it’s not actually her school (she just does a subject there) so I don’t think they really keep a record of pupils who don’t belong to them all the time…

because the smog was so bad the air was almost a solid yellow brown and there were days when visibility could be measured in yards, not miles and the sun was barely visible as a creepy glowing orb. it was especially bad in the la area, famous for it’s inversion layer that holds the smog in.

Well in that case, this guy follows the path i took.
I brought a gas mask to school sometime last week. I got alot of weird looks and “WHY?”‘s. My answer was always “SWINE FLU”

And of course once i put it on when some girl sneezed is when i got written up and suspended for three days.

Do you really think it’s a him? I thought it was a her. The frail hairless arms with zero definition, even the first lady wouldn’t allow that. Is that embroidery on the tee shirt? And no real man would actually give a damn, this level of protection is extremely chickish. However, when I was a youth at the Woodstock Music and Art festival I actually did encounter a fellow with a WW1 gasmask with the canister removed and the hose bent up and secured at 180 degrees. A screen was inserted into the open end of the (now upward facing hose) and some herbal blend was contained by said screen. When the mask was applied to the face and the lighter was applied to the herbal mix, hilarity and colors followed.

The kid said in the article that he was making a statement about how overboard with the fearmongering everyone went when the first few cases were diagnosed at UD.
