I’ve been in King’s universe for nearly 30 years but I didn’t read the Colorado Kid. My daughter liked it. Blaze was good, as far as these later books go, and Duma Key – Lisey’s Story was good but excruciatingly intimate; I cringed. I’ll never stop reading him but nothing ever compares to his earlier works – Salem’s Lot and The Stand – 2 of the scariest books ever written. THE 2 scariest, including Lovecraft. Heh – how many times he retired, only to show up a year or two later with 2 or 3 new books – as though he can stop writing. And when his eyes finally lose their sight, he’ll still be writing because it’s what he has to do. And so long as I’m around I’ll be reading them, because he’s like “going home.” After all, I’ve been with him even longer than I have my husband (23 years with him.)

I haven’t read Dark Towers. I just remember characters in later novels referencing Carrie and Christine and the dead kid in what became “Stand By Me”. I suppose when you create an entire universe, you are allowed to point out the greatest hits.

No, she still reminds me of Victoire Thivisol from Ponette and Chocolat. But in Ponette she was just a baby and she won an award anyway; it was one of the saddest movies ever. Subtitles, though; gotta be literate lol. Seriously, watch the trailer at IMdB and see if you don’t fall in love with that baby and if she doesnt’ remind you of this kid.

Stephen King’s an actual thief in that case! I’m sure my friends and I used to tell a story called “The lamp shade walks at midnight” when we were little… (We were too scared to tell the “black coffin” or the “china doll” or the “crazy-guy-on-the-roof-of-the-car”)
No joke, no-one would use the toilets in our primary school for a while ‘cos all the children swore the china doll monster thing was hiding in them…

Since I don’t see a “reply” button on the Stephen King discussion above, this will have to suffice:

Stephen King may or may not have sold out but he sure got tired for a while there. He had a long dry period between Pet Semetary and Misery, imo. I liked the Talisman, LOVE The Stand and was stupid enough to read The Shining alone in a barely furnished apartment. He began to lose me when he began self references in his later works and the entire Shelob ripoff at the end of IT almost made me throw the book across the room.

Re Stephen King: I am a fan. In general I don’t care for horror and in fact don’t cling to any genre except classics, and also I’m not the “fan” type, but I love SK. He has characterizations, mastery of story, command of the language. If he *happened* to be known for a different genre and yet wrote in the exact same way, he’d have fewer fans but more critical respect.

Also, I don’t think any of his books qualify as science fiction, certainly not hard science fiction or anywhere close to it.

I heard that story too. The heck of it is, the people who ran the google streetview car out of their neighborhood were of the class that actually gets to write laws and enforce contracts, not the hoi polloi. In defense of the original statement, I don’t think child molesters care if the kid’s face is blurred out. You can still tell it’s a kid.

That said, I think it’s really stupid to think pervs will use Street View to find children when driving down the road gives them real time information…not where a kid was located months ago.
