So you don’t believe in individual rights then? Because rights only come from people in groups. People alone do not have rights, they have power. Rights derive from agreements between people in groups. Without the group, it is absurd to even speak of rights, because you need to base your assertion of rights on some unprovable principles that others may not share. Put another way, if you are by yourself and someone wants to kill you, screaming about your rights won’t help. You either have the power to fight them off, or you don’t.

It seems every generation has its Pharisees… Of course, niether of us are qualified to speak about this since you are teh unbeliever and I’m lying about my faith to further the cause of socialism… (Sorry, to drag that in but I found that particularly nasty)
But don’t completely give up on us worshippers in groups: I suppose humans were meant to make communities and gain and learn and benefit from them. I really value my church because it is a community and a family and I don’t thing the faith of all the people in it could survive this long without connecting this way.
(And it’s not the building: my favourite service of the year is held on a muddy, marshy hillside. (8am, Easter Sunday ))

Nope, the “Christians” believe that God favors the rich as that is why they are rich. God also favors those who seek to buy their way into heaven upon the backs of others.

They think it is a game with a clear winner. They also think that loathing thy neighbor is a way to God. So if God is love but they harbor no love, how can they honestly believe to know God? Even when they talk about their families, it is under the idea of “What’s mine is mine” rather than love of another human being.

It is why I avoid religion but hold the idea of faith. Something is out there, sure, but don’t think you will ever get me to believe that it can be found in a building filled with people playing a game.

Oh, and I thought I should point out, that you, who “claims” and yes I used the word claims, to be a Christian, would have such a problem with socialist ideas, and quote such a classist remark. Does the phrase do unto others as you would have done unto you have absoluely no meaning to you whatsoever? Would you rather allow ppl to die in a business orientated health care system such as America’s? Which does nothing but help the rich get richer? You woud think that someone with such strong Christian ideals as yourself (and yes, I am being sarcastic again), would prefer everyone to be given the same treatment, regardless of wealth, or position in society. So you can quote from the bible as much as you like Anniee, because your true self comes through in every single one of your posts, and I have to tell you, it doesn’t seem very Christian to me.

Far be it from me to try to change anyone’s opinion, I was just sharing mine, and think of it what you will. But as AC said, unless your statements regarding the Australian Public education system are based on some knowledge and experience, I’d refrain from commenting.
Why dont you take a good look at all of the countries who are quite happily running socialised health care, education etc etc, and see how they compare with your own services. Then once you’ve done that, form your own opinion, quit spatting out archaeic quotes from long dead presidents who were around before women were even allowed a vote, and then if you still have the same opinion, well at least it will be truly yours.

Wow, this is why I love forums. How fantastic to go from arm flailing tube men, to a debate about socialism and christianity lol.
Oh, and for my point of view, on the socialism thing… personally, I really like that I can go to the hospital/doctor, any time of day or night, and know that my care wont be based on how much money I have in the bank, and that if my house is on fire, or my home is being robbed, I can call upon emerency services without having to give them my credit card details over the phone. That when I have children, I can send them to a public school and know that they are still going to get a great education. Now I may be that way because I’m Australian, and not American, and haven’t had it beaten into me throughout my life that socialism is the work of the devil, but seriously, I kinda like it

I don’t proselytize either. But neither do I allow atheists to tell me what Christianity is, not when they have no real understanding of it. In the cases where they DO have understanding of it, or at least respect for it, I listen. And yes I am harshest in issues of Christianity with those who claim the title; that is as it should be – we can’t tell the world how to live but we are absolutely commanded to judge inside the church. Paul was mighty in mercy but he was also pretty ruthless and that’s just how it is.

Don’t worry about her, AC. She’s got a very narrow view of Christianity, Conservatism, and every other ideal she holds dear. That doesn’t make her wrong about what she believes, but it does make her rather difficult to deal with. She also seems to have an empathy problem, and refuses to put herself into the shoes of others to see *why* the think the way they do. In her mind, if you disagree with the Bible, with Conservatism, or with whatever her issue of the day is, you’re wrong. Period.

Of course it bothers me.. but I hear worse every single day. I don’t preach to everyone I see who is an atheist and I don’t get aggressive whenever someone says something that hurts me. Unbelievers will find out the truth of the matter when the time comes.
There’s a time for preaching and arguing, but you can’t do it forever. I try to act like a Christian 24/7 and I make mistakes but I think trying to set an example is the best way to go about things. I don’t understand how capitalism can be moral but I can understand that there are moral capitalists. The reason I know this? Uncompromisingly Christian, fair people like Froo who actually act Christian.

What she fails to consider is that everyone has different experiences to bring to the table which might cause a slightly different take on the situation. Anniee, the original church was completely socialist in nature. It was a commune where all shared all. Go back and read the book of Acts. Having said that, I do not personally believe that Christianity and conservative capitalism are mutually exclusive, but knowing the set up of the early church, I’m not about to invalidate the claims of socialism in the church by others.

You despise us? Here, in Scotland, there are plenty of us to be found, although Christians as a whole are a much, much smaller group… But then, the right wing isn’t very popular here.
