And get exploited by big business yourself instead. There’s only one store chain I will buy “fair trade” products from, and that’s because that one prices its own brand fair trade goods with other stores own brand, instead of higher prices than brand name.

“The Market” cuts both ways, and expecting to maintain your percentage markup just because you pay suppliers a “fair price” (tr. way more than local prices and incomes justify) is simply moving where you’re exploiting people (if the producers were actually exploited).

MOST of what we buy has a CERTIFIED FAIR TRADE alternative so EVERYONE has a choice…

My husband doesn’t make a lot of money but because we are careful, we don’t smoke, we drink alcohol very rarely, we grow some of our own vegetables & I cook from scratch rather than buying pre-made we can afford the extra for the ETHICAL versions of things like coffee, chocolate & clothing…

We made the decision to do this & you can too…unless of course you are quite happy to buy products that were made by the exploited & poverty stricken…

Exactly. I still get the shakes remembering it. I ended up taking the kids (at the time 6, 4, and 2) through the Magic Kingdom by myself that morning (because somebody was hungover and didn’t want to go…grr.); it was November and there was no line for Small World. I think we rode it about six times in a row before I broke and called a halt to the torture. Never again, I tell you…almost 14 years ago and I can….still…hear….the voices.

Hmm. I’ve never seen those before, and while I have to applaud the concept of providing shoes for kids that don’t have any, as well as the commitment to maintaining high standards for their factory workers, I have to say: Dude, that’s…like a $50 pair of house slippers. They seriously look like something they’d hand out to wear on your feet in prison, or in the mental hospital.

On the other hand, if you can pull that look off for work, I say more power to you. Gotta be comfortable, anyway.

If you watch the documentary-thing that’s linked to the LOL, (it’s actually pretty cool) ubr, the Chinese president has said “No…. I fink he…. He no die.”
It’s sad that students who went to the SAME school that was the majority of the original group of the student protesters don’t recognize Tank Man. And if you look Tienanmen Square in America, you’ll see dozens of images of the Tank Man. However, if you do it in China, you’ll get three pages with no images of the Tank Man. This is because internet providers here are DIRECTLY breaking a law that says United States companies cannot sell items that would allow censorship or control of the public, etc, to China. They sell products that allow China to filter and pick and choose the images and websites that can be browsed in the entire country. Horrid, no?

You shouldn’t be judged by what kind of shoes you buy, because of how they were MADE. You can’t assume everyone knows Nike’s worker’s conditions before they even BUY the shoe. Saying that is just asinine. (I wear New Balance by the way, so I have no personal reason to be defensive about it.)
On another note, anyone who calls another American a “TRAITOR” for what they wear is making a traitor of themselves. It’s called freedom of expression, we’re allowed to use it.
