Ah yes, Silvio Berlusconi. The man who called Obama “young, handsome and suntanned”. I don’t envy the Italians right now.

    • As it turns out, today’s encounter went quite well (link). Although I’m not happy that we’re taking three Gitmo detainees.

    • mistobaan says:

Yeah, we don’t envy ourselves either, since the episode you recall is nothing in comparison with the past of this man (custom made laws, corruption, friendship with mafiosi….)

Muammar’s got a picture of a LOLcat on his chest??? O_O

LOL! Somehow, that’s not the kind of uniform I would imagine President for Life Obama designing for himself.

      • Eric-in-STL says:

Dude, I’m an Obama fan, and I’d be scared to death if he somehow became President for Life.

        • Dhoti says:

I wasn’t implying that he was planning it — just that President for Life Obama (as distinct from President Obama) would give himself a very non-banana republic despot uniform.

          • froofrou says:

Hmmmm, my comment is awaiting moderation. But it’s a link to what his uniform could look like.

Does it include a riding crop? I think it should.

            • Dhoti says:

Froo, noted racist, posting an image link about clothing choices for a black man? This can only end in tears.

I’m afraid I’ll get arrested for even clicking on it…so no thanks, hon.

              • mothergoose says:

Not that she would need my defense, but for all the time I’ve been on this site (just about a year) I’ve never known Froo to make or post any racist statements… now, if you have some proof, I’d be interested in seeing it….oh, that’s right, you’re Dhoti…you make blanket accusations and can never back them up. And just so you’re aware… I won’t be responding to you, as I will be choosing to ignore you from here forward, as I find you to be generally irritating…

                • Dhoti says:

Then either you’re not paying attention, or you’re being willfully ignorant. My money’s on the latter.

Proof? No problem. But by all means, live up to my expectations of you and ignore it. (Until the next time you show up to make an unfounded accusation and ignore the proof, of course.)

Link. Look for froo’s posts at 5:40 pm and 11:41 am. (Is that enough for you to search, or do you need the anchors?)

                • Dhoti says:

It wasn’t the first time. Link.

                • Dhoti says:

Link, again. It’s almost like it’s too easy to find these.

                • Dhoti says:

One last link — search for 9:27, when she says she doesn’t use the n-word in a derogatory way. So I guess that makes it all okay.

The ball’s in your court, mothergoose. I proved what I said. Now, are you going to behave like an adult and retract your blanket accusation, or are you going to slink away and repeat the same trick on some other thread down the road?

                  • paws4thot says:

The image frou links to is of Benito Mussolini. As he was Italian (Mediterainian Caucasian), and none of your links work, I’m going to call BS!

                    • Dhoti says:

What image? I’m referring to comment text, not an image link.

If the links don’t work for you, try copying and pasting them manually. Or searching for the lol name — visible in the URL — with Google (append site:punditkitchen.com). I’ll assume you’re not just *saying* they don’t work…

                      • paws4thot says:

All I’ve got in your 6:59, 7:00 and 7:08 is the word Link, in black, and my cursor isn’t switching from a text cursor to a hyperlink one when I hover over them, so there’s nothing to click on, or copy into the address bar, or worth Googleing. I Googled what I got anyway, and got 673 hits.
I’m just saying that your proof isn’t going to work for everybody.

                        • Dhoti says:

Ah. Click on my name in each of those posts instead.

                        • paws4thot says:

Ok, gotcha. Just most people I know on here use the URI to link their blog or Cheezpeep account.

                        • Tyler says:

C’mon, let’s play nice. I haven’t looked yet, but I’m sure Froo wasn’t being racist.

                        • Dhoti says:

How about this, Tyler — why don’t you make up your mind AFTER reading the evidence, instead of before?

                        • Tyler says:

Oh come on, Dhoti. Cut me some slack- you made up your mind before you saw it too.

Some time later – I’m going to say “not proven”, at least in part because this is a LOL site, and people do say things that can be read as [something]ist without being [something]ist.

                        • Dhoti says:

You don’t get it, Tyler. I had already read her comments — remember, some of them were directed at me. After having read them, I came to the conclusion that froo was racist. Given that evidence-based conclusion, I decided her link was risky.

See how that’s different? My opinion on *froo*, not the *link*, was formed after seeing her comments.

                        • Dhoti says:

paws, I’ll admit, I’m being a little fast and loose with the term “proof” here, because a certain set of posters — of which I believe mothergoose is one — have gone after me in the past by posting a link they assert to be proof, then treating anything further I said as Flat Earther for contradicting established fact, where fact is defined as the content of any external URL.

So no, to be truthful, I’m not saying it’s incontrovertible, though I do think it speaks for itself. But I do think that this “you never back things up” meme — which, oddly enough, froo was one of the people who pushed originally to try to shut me up — needs to be called out.

                        • Igloo McCoy says:

I like to think that Dhoti saves all of these conversations, carefully annotates them, and reviews them each night before s/he goes to bed.

                        • Dhoti says:

But if I can’t ever back up what I say, why would I save them?

                        • Igloo McCoy says:

When did I say that you couldn’t back up what you said?

                      • I looked through the posts you linked to, and unless you’re suggesting that any use of “n—–”, even as part of a figure of speech and in context where it’s applied to herself, is inherently racist….I don’t see anything. It might not be a term I’d choose to employ due to the inflammatory nature, but it gets her point across in a salient manner, and more importantly, she’s not directing it at anyone else. If I were to use the word “(unt” (I suspect that would get filtered…) to refer to myself, does that make me misogynistic?

Perhaps a better question would be whether you can pinpoint anything, other than the self-referential use of one word, that would indicate a racist viewpoint? Unless of course that’s your sole basis for the statement, in which case I suppose we’ll have to agree to disagree.

                        • Dhoti says:

I see it as racist because none of these discussions involved race, Malcolm X, that one Al Qaeda video, etc., so deliberately introducing a term with very specific racial overtones seems completely uncalled for. (Contrast that to, say, me disagreeing with someone and calling them a chimp — the most reasonable, general interpretation isn’t that I’m making a slur.) And she’s definitely not just directing it at herself — she’s trying to push the term on her opponent. (She’s not saying, “I’m a so-and-so” — she’s saying, “you’re calling me a so-and-so”. She’s literally said that to me, at least in my first link.)

The older links, before I was around, suggest that it’s part of a pattern — if she can’t, or doesn’t want to, respond, she breaks out the term. (And not just the n-word — specifically, the “house n-word” term.)

I’d also point out her “massa” talk from my first link — that was before she dropped the bomb on me, but again, she was trying to force on me the stereotype that that’s how I saw her.

                        • Ok, I think I understand where you’re coming from here; it’s the use of the term in an otherwise non-racially-charged argument you find offensive? My personal inclination is that in that context it’s actually less likely to indicate racism; I’m assuming here that we both understand the stereotype she was invoking and negating as to herself, so I’ll ask this: What, in your judgment, would be a better way to phrase the concept?

                        • Dhoti says:

That’s part of it; I don’t think it had any place in the discussion. (After all, it’s a slur; its primary purpose is to be offensive. Sure, it can be used academically, but those uses are few and far between.) What about turncoat, appeaser, apologist, or follower?

But more than that, I still maintain she was trying to deflect those racial connotations onto me. After all, she was trying to say that I called her that, not that she felt she was that. It’s the third-person reference that’s really the problem.

                        • After all, she was trying to say that I called her that,

I got that she was making the implication that you regarded her as acting in that manner, rather than that you used that specific term; however, I can see where you’d feel like she was ascribing an action to you that you hadn’t committed.

I’m glad we can talk about this calmly, by the way, Dhoti.

                        • Dhoti says:

I hope I’m being calm. This is the sort of thing that gets me a bit worked up — as you can probably tell.

                        • Dhoti says:

Collaborator — yeah, that’s much closer. Or Vichy. (And I think froo had used a couple of other synonyms before the other thing came up.) But certainly we call all figure out how to get the point across without having to use the other thing.

I hear your point, believe me. And I realize that I’m immediately combative when it comes to froo. But — and not that this is an excuse — when I first showed up, she was one of the regulars who started immediately attacking me, first as a wingman, then on her own. Since then, it’s just been lies, accusations, and escalation; I can’t remember the last time we spoke civilly. I guess I feel like she’s not posting to discuss, just to hate, and I definitely react to that.

                        • I tend to stay out of that stuff until I feel like I have some understanding of where people in it are coming from (obviously that takes a while sometimes!) rather than kneejerk piling on (which I’ll admit I’ve seen here at times).

Froo has a lot of friends here (including me) because in general she’s an intelligent, well-spoken person with a good heart. She does bite if she feels she’s being attacked, though, and I think that’s what you two initially ran into. You’ve toned the confrontational attitude down some since you first started posting, and I respect that; I really think that if the two of you could step back and try to discuss something without namecalling and snarling you’d have some good discussions. But that’s up to the two of you.
