Re-suckplay.
So, does anyone know what’s the deal with the photograph pinned to his chest?
it’s a picture of omar al-mukhtar in chains with his italian captors taken during the italian occupation of libya… he was hanged by the italians in 1931…
Well, that seems in poor taste as a fashion accessory.
especially since he wore it when he landed in rome to accept $5B from the italians for their occupation of libya…
*headdesk*
Apparently it’s in protest. I have no idea why Gaddaffi is protesting, but he is.
al-mukhtar’s murder?
Yes, and the fact that al-mukhtar’s son accompanied Gaddaffi on the trip.
protesting the harsh treatment of libya under the italian regime… i thought it was pretty self explanatory…
Well it’s not like Berlusconi killed him. (I’m…guessing, anyway. If he did, that would change things a bit.)
Did the math (duh)…I’m going with “Well, it’s not like Berlusconi killed him!” sans disclaimer.
On September 16, 1931, on the orders of the Italian court and with Italian hopes that Libyan resistance would die with him, Mukhtar was hanged before his followers in the concentration camp of Solluqon .[2]
Didn’t we JUST see this one?
i think it’s still on the front page… why isn’t there any pics on the iranian revolution that is currently under way?
Better get on that one, ubr. I’ve seen some YouTube footage, surely there’s still pics also…
check these out diss…
frankly i’m amazed at some of the images…
Holy sh!t.
For once, DT totally nailed it in two words. :-O
Give me two words and I’ll nail anything (wait, what?)
Wanna fu(k?
Thanks for the link, ubr. Some of those are just mindblowing. I …can’t think of anything funny, though. Too soon?
considering that we usually use “too soon” in mockery i hesitated to use that phrase… but it sure does fit here… the only pic i saw that we could possibly do a caption on were the ones of the iranian police getting the sh!t kicked out of them by the crowds… that or the one where the iranian women are sitting on the ground and you can only see the boots of their oppressors…
Great link, ubr…thanks.
indeed, thank you
Well, I hate myself a little and it’s in, um….poor taste, but I did one. I’m going to the Express Train to Hell waiting area now.
not as bad as it could have been. bonus points for at least trying to be positive with it.
(if you’re taking the train, i suggest second to last compartment, just before the bar – great view from top floor and not a bad jaunt to get a drink)
I’m sure the Ayatollahs are remembering that this is kind of what their revolution looked like thirty years ago. It would be a real game changer for the young people in Iran to take their country back from the extremists in power right now!
all i can say is that iran has made a “mockery of democracy”… if we ever had an election that wound up with a 40% margin of victory in what was a national election i hope that we would riot too…
and yes, that will probably be the first and last time that lieberman and i agree on anything…
Personally, I’m not sure they have a legitimate beef (with the election, that is. The tactics employed in quelling the riots are certainly insupportable.) Of Iran’s 66 million people only 16 live in the three large cities, where Musawi is more popular. The rural population, more traditional and less informed, support Ahmadinejad religiously. The population of the U.S is relatively homogeneous.
It’s demonstrated (or so I’ve read, haven’t seen the movie myself) in Peter Lom’s documentary “letters to the president.” [link]
And the one caption I thought of making was “So Khamenei decided to pick his own underling for once, is that what you’re mad about?”
did you know that according to the election results moussavi’s ethnic group and home town did not vote for him? there are more divisions in iran than just poor and rich people…
“the population of the US is relatively homogenous” – are you f—ing kidding me? did you already forget the elections WE HAD IN NOVEMBER?!!!??!
your whole point with your comment seems to be that iran is already a dictatorship and therefore we shouldn’t expect anything from their elections except more of the same. the problem is that the iranians believe that they live in a democracy and when they woke up in a dictatorship they started fighting against it.
would you have trusted election results that had a 40% margin of victory in favor of mccain?
RELATIVELY. Relatively homogeneous. And I don’t see how your elections have any relevance. Obama does not come from a ghetto.
The part about Moussavi’s home town I did not know, and if it’s true then they most certainly have a legitimate beef. I would, however, like to know your source.
And I’m not making a distinction between “rich and poor” I’m making a distinction between the progressive, modern society that can be found in the three major cities with the traditional, religious, and insular society found in the rural areas.
I would not have trusted an election that ended in a 40% margin, no, but I live in a relatively homogeneous society as well.
You wish. Just because Moussavi is labeled as a “moderate” that doesn’t mean he’d introduce great democratic reforms to Iran (even if he wanted to). But I agree with you, he’s definitely the better candidate. But somehow I don’t think his movement will make it…
yeah, the dudes with guns usually don’t like losing power…
second DT’s comment – holy sh!t
.
thanks for the link ubr – not having a tv is good most of the time, but i miss out things like this. those pics are reminisent of when they overthrew the shah, and events are probably just as deadly this time as the last time iran revolted, but i hope this revolt succeeds all the same. iran was a ‘progressive’ nation 30 yrs ago until ayatollah khomeini and his ilk dragged them back to the 14th cent.
History FTW!
Do you blame them though? The Shah and his henchmen/Gestapo Squad were not nice people.
Hostage crisis.
Yes, well the 60′s & 70′s weren’t the USA’s shining moments when trying to prop up the wrong regime.
That goes to prove the old adage, be careful what you wish for. They wished to get rid of the Shah and were willing to take anything in his place, now look what they live with daily. Maybe they will have the ability to thow this set of morons out and get someone they can live with.
Why does that keep happening??? Everyone we hope leaves power is replaced by someone else we can’t stand. Is there ever a happy medium???? Am I using enough question marks???????????????????
Yes. The stories usally begin with, “Once upon a time…”
and no, consider using more.
Carter did make a complete mess out of the US Embassy crisis. Khomeini was determined to humiliate him to the end, and handed the hostages over just as Reagan was elected President.
Bondfan? from FAILBLOG??
Yes, that BondFan. Why are you so shocked at my presence here?
Not really shocked, so much as surprised.
Didn’t think you guys ever stopped refreshing those pages, man. Comments up there are like phew fooooom! zooom.
Sorry.
I’m having an ADD night.
Didn’t think you guys ever stopped to visit*
oh God, i hope not…
What? What have I done wrong?
I dunno either, Bond.
nothing buddy, just being obnoxious…
I’m curious. What would YOU have done differently in Carter’s position?
Not get attacked by a Killer Swamp Rabbit?
Come on, that rabbit was clearly dropped off by the UFO he saw; what was he supposed to do against alien invaders? Heck, the US military couldn’t even fly through a desert, we obviously couldn’t defend ourselves against alien technology!
I plan to run for president in 2012. My platform will be “Froofrou for President: I promise to never get attacked by swamp rabbits or aliens!”
Finally, a campaign promise that won’t be broken!
(Except I think I’ll start breeding attack rabbits now…)
Note to future secret service: I think that guy *points at Mark* is having unamerican thoughts. I suggest waterboarding and hookers standing just out of his reach.
*starts printing campaign posters*
“A vote for froo is a vote for YOU!!”
*Still printing*
Vote for froo in Two-Oh-One-Two!!!!
Frau Frou Fights for You!
We can always elect you to fill DWN’s vacant position. I know the guys were counting on mud fights but if I can stay press secretary, I’ll swing you my support.
We can still have mud fights if I am elected president. And I’m hereby nominating Jane the illustrious Press Secretary to also be in charge of Jello Procurement for the Jello pool fights.
SWEET! Don’t forget that shortright is my assistant in charge of boobie tassels.
Delicious, Froo. So, so cruel to Mark though. How about they can stand just within his reach, but he can never do anything with them?
i wouldn’t have authorized a poorly planned rescue mission that involved refueling multiple aircraft in a foreign desert at night.
The problem though was really that P!$$ Poor Planning Prevents Perfect Performance.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to send the best of what’s left after the guys who went in to rescue the guys who wents in…
/Applauds
Actually, it was a couple of months after Reagan was elected, because it was a few MINUTES after he was sworn in.
yeah, the shah had his goons, but so does the current administration… go and google the basij militia… or just look at the picture in the [link]. the dude on the left is shoving his pistol back into his waistband…
Without a doubt there are goons in the current gvernement in Iran. But I doubt that they were trained as effectively as the Shah’s people.
meh, not shiny enough
hey… didn’t i see this somewhere?
at least he owned mussolini
What are you talking about? Berlusconi’s suit looks fabulous!
Just my thoughts.
You mean the Emperor Nero on the left?
Oh yeah. I just noticed that. I want his suit!
Damn you, Pundit Kitchen with your normal business hours and posters who go on to have normal lives after 5!! Damn you for dying off just when I get going!!! DAMN YOU!!! DAMN YOU ALL!!!! *shakes fist at sky*
*hugs froo*
Sorry dear. I’d stay on and chat but I have a new book calling my name.
*mutters* Stupid Jane and her stupid book. Meanwhile I’m stuck at work with no one to talk to and no friends and this stupid addictive website making me stay here and try to prod people into talking to me and no cookies and I haven’t eaten lunch yet and not even the stupid trolls are out…….*walks away kicking rocks*
*gives froo a batch of cookies before she leaves*
*kissy sound* MMMWA! Love ya!
I have read a short article in Vogue mentioning that Muammar al-Gaddafi’s uniform is allegedly designed by an Italian designer.
Afghanistan president’s blanket that he always wears is of Gucci.
