I don’t understand the science as to why the moon landings were or were not faked. I do know that the landings were real for one simple reason: Apollo 13. NASA, in dire need of funding, wouldn’t have faked a failure. Also, when those three men were in trouble, the entire world took notice. We even had offers from our enemies for help.

I recall attending a lecture given, back in the 1960s, by John Glenn, the first American to go into orbit. A questioner asked him what went through his mind while he was crouched in the rocket nose-cone, awaiting blastoff. He wryly replied ” I was thinking that the rocket had twenty thousand components, and each was made by the lowest bidder”.

… but …

One immediately wonders whether Shepard despite his reputation as an icy naval aviator might have been a bit anxious waiting for the highly explosive rocket to belch flame and blast him to orbit.

“People asked him that after the flight,” Glenn noted. “And Shepard said: `I wasnt scared, but I was up there looking around, and suddenly I realized I was sitting on top of a rocket built by the lowest bidder.”

Accuracy fail. Buzz Aldrin’s speaking fees start at $30,000 per engagement, while Neil Armstrong’s start at $100,000 on AllAmericanSpeakers dot com. Michael Collins doesn’t do speaking, and has done a couple of autograph sessions for NovaSpace for money.

These were everyday men that with the backing of legions of everyday men, did the incredible. I grew up in the 60′s literally in the shadown of MSC/NASA. These men were my neighbors, their kids were my playmates. I had the best childhood ever watching so many people come together for a great cause…that spun-off so many inventions that we now take for granted. At the time, the tech was so very low…NASA and their contractors were the historical equivalent of Vikings striking out across the Atlantic in shallow boats. Sigh, what so many of you people don’t realize what into this mission of Man. The best, the brightest. America’s most glorious moment. An earthling on another solar system entity. It boggles the mind. God speed all those NASA folks, contractors and their contributors. I wouldn’t be posting this if it weren’t for the space program.

Jackass isn’t doing something courageous in the attempt of learning and exploring.
You can argue that they attempt to learn how painful/embarassing, something is, but that would like saying “We know fire’s hot… but how badly will it burn?” Does that question every voluntarily need to be answered?

There was a very interesting story about that actually.
The video the American public was NOT the original tape of the moon landing. NASA never got their hands on it until recently.
You see, the broadcast beamed down from the lunar lander hit home in Australia where it was processed onto tapes. That tape was of course sent through channels through a closed circuit network directly to NASA, whom having no other way to turn this direct signal into a broadcast, set up a camera to tape the monitor that was displaying the footage. That’s what the American public saw.
The original tapes were stored, but not found, until recently.
That’s where the screw up is… I guess a tape labeler with “FREAKING MOONWALK TAPES” wouldn’t work to label and identify these tapes. But oh well.

I was lucky enough to actually attend a lecture Neal Armstrong gave and be invited to an after party. I have a photo with him. He is an incredibly humorous and humble man. I’ve met politicians and movie stars, but I felt that I was in the presence of someone great when I met him, but he would totally not agree. It was an honor to meet someone who actually did make a difference.
