Ok, speaking of mail service, flat out the service here is excellent. I can get something across the country in no more then two days, and that’s general delivery. When sending stuff to the States, it usually takes about seven days to get there, but getting anything from the States to here takes at least two weeks. The only thing they don’t do here that I wish they did was pick mail up at your house.

Now that you mention it, froo, I don’t know how the populations compared. The high-rises I’ve lived in were much taller than the projects — one, in fact, had a great view down at a notorious project under demolition — but the units were probably bigger, too. Hmmm.

Yeah, it’s really hard to get in the habit of calling it that. Stands for Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

One Christmas I was walking out of the post office and saw an elderly lady with an armful of packages walking up the steps. I went back to open the door when the manager came out and told the lady that they were closed (it was ten minutes early). The lady look flabbergasted and told him that she had driven a long way. I told the man that it was Christmas and he should be ashamed of himself and he ended up letting the lady in. He didn’t learn any life lessons, though, because he continues to be a jerk.

froo, my theory is that offices in smaller towns are set up for getting mail into and out of town, and local mail tends to get handled on the side. I have some vague recollections about why that is, but nothing concrete I can point to, unfortunately.

Then again, service here can be spastic. Netflix is usually prompt, but I’ll often get two or three copies of Aviation Week (a weekly) at once.

Dhoti, I seem to get good service at the post office as far as the desk people are concerned (at least at one post office branch that I go to…..I REFUSE to go to the one near my house), but God forbid that you need something delivered across town in less than a week. And for it to go to my parents’ house three hours away has taken two weeks or more for a simple letter. I don’t know if that’s the PO as a whole, or just this town…..but damn…..

Okay, froo, that tracks — the best DMV I can remember was in a city of ~160k. Beats hands-down the service in my current city of 1M++.

Strangely, I’ve generally gotten great service at the post office, but I have a strategy — be nice and open with self-deprecation. (For example, during the Christmas rush, I got an employee who was yelling at everyone else to hand-deliver my package because I referred to the bin next to the APC as “the big dumpster thing” and called myself stupid for not knowing how to open it. It was actually full.)

BMV? That’s a new one to me. I’ve heard RMV, from Massachusetts — a model of brusque efficiency. I rather liked it.

Dhoti, I live in a city with approximately 120,000 as of 2005. It’s not huge, but it’s not tiny either. I think that’s the reason I love this city so much. It’s got all the convenience of a big city with the ambiance of a small town. And we don’t tend to vandalize cars here based solely on bumper stickers that differ with certain political views, as they do in a town lived in by one of my best friends

My experience (limited to half a dozen states in the eastern half of the US) is that the smaller the office, the better the service. The region of the country didn’t seem to matter much.
