Jon Stewart is made of awesome….

    • Harkness says:

Too bad his team is on recess right now, like the Senate.

    • X says:

I don’t hate the guy, but he mugs to the camera too much- all the exaggerated eyeroll stuff. Makes the show unwatchable for me.

      • parksj1 says:

Totally agree. He’s really funny when he’s not doing that crap every 10 seconds.

I also have a problem with the liberal spin (I’m a moderate and I hate conservative spin on other shows too). What I have a problem with is that he misses so many comedic opportunities because he avoids making fun of the democratic agenda sometimes.

I think Colbert, even though the nature of his character is conservative-mocking, is more balanced somehow. And his humor is more intelligent. Better show altogether.

    • I love Jon Stewart to pieces, but it doesn’t make this lol funny.

    • peon says:

Hardly. His job is to run a fake comedy news show that solely makes fun of and criticizes real news shows. He chastises reporters for doing poor work, but when anybody criticizes his integrity, he just falls behind his defense of “Oh but we’re just a comedy show!”

Let’s see Jon get a real job and have someone make a show dedicated to making fun of him.

      • mothergoose says:

        So… Glenn Beck is……..???????

        • slaggingham says:

          Crazy, but right.

          • mothergoose says:

Glenn Beck is right??? About WHAT??!!

            • wallFly says:

              ROFL!

i almost choked on my coffe when i read slaggin up top. that’s a good one! best joke all day

            • brak says:

About playing to his audience so he can keep that PAYCHECK coming in.
He’s just as much a comedian as Jon is, just not as honest about it.

              • froofrou says:

Not a comedian, a pundit. Two different birds.

And let us not forget that right or wrong, Beck spanks in the ratings every night :-)

                • It’s just sad, that, because he’s a bit of a hate monger and I think that’s what people like about him. It makes them feel like their own impotent rage is somehow justified (not talking about you, froo).

                  • froofrou says:

I dont’ ever watch FoxNews or Beck, but he’s never come off as a hate monger to me. More of an angry pundit. I guess it’s perception.

I will say this though, I think a LOT of the perceptions of RUsh, Beck, Hannity, and the others come from people who don’t actually watch the shows and who take clips either out of context or as an extremely shortened version of the whole. THe thing about Rush is that in order to figure out that he’s basically making fun of the whole process is to listen to the show for a while, not just catch five minutes here and there.

Now, Beck crying is too much for me. I’ve seen those clips, and they irritate me.

By the way, who else is pissed that Charlie Gibson told Cindy Sheehan that “enough is enough already”?

                    • Jane St.Clair says:

Really? I’ve been a bit out of it, news wise, since my search for a job has taken up all my attention.

                    • fw says:

I consider being subjected to Hannity and the rest of the Fox News gang my supreme punishment for being the only Dem in the family. They’re on every night at the family’s house, and I can’t help but watch. Sean Hannity makes my stomach turn–and not just because of his blatant fear mongering (hate mongering? No. Fear mongering, yes) but because he labels himself fair and never allows an opinion other than his own, or stacks the deck in the favor of his opinion. Such as calling in Black Panther leaders to discuss moderate Islam. Right.

That being said, I don’t watch MSNBC because the clips I have seen seem just as stacked and narrow minded as the uber-right on Fox.

                      • Justacarolinian says:

Thank you for pointing out that BOTH sides are stacking the deck for how they want to present things. Oh, for an honest news source.

                    • Justacarolinian says:

I personally love it when Walter E. Williams fills in. And I get the humor, and most of the time laugh till I cry with the parodies. (Every time I hear ABBA, I see Barney Frank)
I think I could handle Rush better if he would hit the Republicans as hard as he does the Democrats. And he DOES have an ego.

                      • froofrou says:

He’s got an ego the size of Manhatten, but that’s beside the point :-)

As far as him hitting the Republicans, he does. He doesn’t get as down and dirty with them as he does with the Dems, for sure, but he’s pretty well disgusted with the whole lot of them. A quote from today: “CALLER: I’m just mad that they’re not answering these questions which you might expect.

RUSH: Hey, it’s the Republicans. Get used to it. That shouldn’t be a surprise.”

                        • You know who I miss? Tim Russert. That guy was class. I was so bummed when he died before the election. We need more like him.

                        • Justacarolinian says:

True, but it seems to be to be just the “token” Republican, kinda like the black guy in the 70′s sitcom. Though I laugh at the John McCain impersonation. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Rush give a big wet sloppy kiss to Lincoln Chaffee (sp?) and Arlin Spector? It was more important to get a R in office than a genuine conservative. Liddy Dole was also a key player in that, and that got her a quick exit here in NC.
He was sucking up to McCain before the election too. But I have also been listening when a lot of the controversial things have happened, and he is taken out of context more than any other person in modern history.

                        • froofrou says:

No, he’s pretty much always disliked McCain and his policies, has thought of Specter as an idiot since he switched parties the FIRST time, and I’m not sure about Chaffee.

As far as getting an R in there, you’re right. He would rather see an R than a D if at all possible. But he’s never wavered in the last 23(?) years on his core conservative values, and has always taken those to task who he feels isn’t fulfilling those.

I think if he could crawl up Reagan’s butt and live there, he would.

And you’re absolutely spot on about him being taken out of context more than just about anyone in history.

                        • Charlie Foxtrot says:

The problem is CNN’s fault. Before they started, TV news didn’t really pay attention to ratings, the stations felt it was a civic service. Then 24 hour news started — opponents at the time said it would turn news into entertainment….hmm I wonder what happened? At least Stewart is honest, the rest? Hmm, the word pimp comes to mind for some reason…

                        • lolzalotamus says:

I agree with foxtrot. The 24 hour news ‘market’ itself pays no attention to important info, take this graph jam for example

                          http://graphjam.com/2008/11/12/song-chart-memes-us-political-belief/

We don’t know these people and i’ve only heard….(i cant believe i’m going to say this)….racism against D’s or R’s in vehement amounts on the internet. People are calm about politics until they don’t have to account for it or get paid ridiculous amounts to spew one sided info. Are any of them wrong? Not exactly, just corrupt and self justified. Jon makes fun of news reporters while putting forth Democratic ideas, so what? He still makes fun of Democrats instead of defending them like MSNBC does, or like FOX protects its own republicans. Who of all these people has a good enough head on their shoulders to weigh all the politics in the world and put forth good news? No one will and feeling happy about talking issues on a pundit kitchen website is entertaining as long as we’re open to hearing each other.

….i would like to point out how egotistical almost every comment on this lol was….including my own….

                        • Charlie Foxtrot says:

@lolzaloltamos, of course the lols are egotistical… why should the news bubbas have all the fun. ;)

                    • Torus2112 says:

I watch these shows when I get a chance, and listened to Limbaugh a lot for a while. Believe me, the clips are the gems, but the overall picture is not much different. I’ve listened to Rush the most and the theme is usually what the democrats are doing, how to wreck it, etc., and at first glance he appears smart, using big words and pontificating for his whole three hour show.

However, you begin to realize there is no substance, that you can’t debate him or criticize him because he’ll make several different claims in the same truckload of words to the point where you aren’t given enough time to focus on any one thing. Play a clip of him saying an outlandish thing about this or that and he’ll dig up a clip of him saying the opposite on that same show to cover his ass.

Lastly these pundits will say things that seem to make sense, but without fail if you actually look it up the fact or statistic they gave to justify their argument was misleading, untrue, incomplete, or rendered irrelevant by another basic fact.

      • Yeah…see, when you “criticize the integrity” of a show that’s on the Comedy Channel, appearing after “Scrubs,” it makes you look like…an asshole.

      • charro says:

He has a fake job? I bet he gets paid real well for that fake job. I wish I could have a fake job like that.

      • FaileV says:

If you had to do something in order to criticize it, there would never be any critics. Hell I’m no chef, but i know when a meal is disgusting, and I’m no news reporter, but i know that the news channels on both sides isn’t cutting it. In fact I hesitate to call them “real news shows” as I see it news is fact, and these 24 hour news networks pile in so much fluff, opinions, and bias that it’s no longer news. I’m sure if they tried they could bend a weather forecast to look liberal or conservative.
My point is, they are doing a poor job, you just notice Jon calling it out cause his venue looks like what they do. It is a comedy show, if you are really watching the daily show looking for news integrity…you have some serious problems there, that’s why if you question his news integrity you look like a moron. It’s like criticizing a cartoonist for not using the proper techniques to make an art masterpiece.

        • Naoyusimi says:

I just want to point out the mind-boggling fact that we all take for granted nowadays; you mentioned it above: ” . . . the news channels on both sides . . . ”

The incongruity between that phrase and what used to be true makes my brain hurt.

      • wombot says:

        Who critisizes his integrity? You?

    • Cosman246 says:

Yes he is, yes he is

    • anonymouse says:

yeah did you see him pwn that Betsy McCoughy. I ate popcorn watching that, it was beutiful. though he is not the comedic news god everyone says he is, he is really good

  2. Dave says:

Yes, because dumbass comedians know more than experts who actually spend years studying things.

Maybe he should shut up and listen to people instead of spreading his stupidity. And you people need to stop worshiping snark and start caring about intellect and knowledge.

    • mothergoose says:

      It’s called a sense of humor… they’re nice… you should try one.

    • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Anytime anyone comments and tells people they are worshiping something, which 99.999% of the time they are not, they ignore you. If you want to reach someone, you have to choose tactics that work, like communication and finding middle ground. You can’t just go around shouting out insults and expect anyone to care what you think. It also doesn’t show intellect or knowledge.

      • Danbala says:

Hah. Yes. I often wonder about that strategy.

“Oh, you don’t agree with me? OK…
        U R DUM!
There. Surely now you see the validity of my arguments?”

How on Earth does anyone think that’ll work? :p

        • wallFly says:

          they’re dumb! that’s the answer :)

        • Dave says:

Hey, you just described the strategy behind Stewart and Colbert.

          • wallFly says:

colbert maybe, he’s made of sarcasm. but stewart does a very good job in his interview – a surprisingly good job, actually. besides doing what a journalist should, he researches the topic (well, maybe his staff, whatever) but more than that he’s persistent. i like his show because of his interviews – he doesn’t lay off when the guest gives the party line or politically correct answer. just wish there were more journalists in the actual news channels that pursued a story as doggedly as he does.

            • Naoyusimi says:

I completely agree! “. . . he doesn’t lay off when the guest gives the party line or politically correct answer. just wish there were more journalists in the actual news channels that pursued a story as doggedly as he does.”

I have said that many times. More “real” journalists should stop kissing a$$ and get to the bottom of things. That used to be the definition of their profession . . . not anymore.

Main problem, IMNSHO, is the settling of numerous media companies into 2 or 3 megacorporations.

          • lowly grunt says:

I don’t see that at all with either of these here fellas.

Unless you mean that you have to be very intelligent to play dumb. Like Jean Stapleton although to be fair, Edith wasn’t dumb, just gentle, sweet, and naive. A little dim, perhaps.

Son of a gun! She’s still alive!

          • Danbala says:

Is either of them trying to have a discussion where they convince other people of the merits of their arguments, or are they making comedy TV where they mostly aim to entertain their audience who are already, for the most part, in agreement with them?

        • dreadd says:

have you watched tea-party rallies? taken a good long look at some of the people at them, and thesigns they carry “communicating” their “ideas” and “arguments”?
still have to ask that last question, do you?
or has the answer always been right there on the boob tube screen.

        • Cosman246 says:

          Nesting fail.
That was supposed to go under VictoryNotVengeance’s comment

          • charro says:

Dude. What is with your nesting fails?

          • slan agat says:

OK, look. None of your “nesting fails” are failing at all. Your comments are appearing at the correct nesting level. Comments posted in reply to an existing comment will appear in the order they were posted, with replies to each directly under. If you look at the left margin, you can follow the gutter between your comment and the previous and you’ll see what nesting level you’re on regardless of how many people responded to the same comment before you.

So please, stop expecting your pearls of something-or-other to be bumped to the top of the pile unless you really were first to reply.

      • Dave says:

Funny, but the exact thing you say one can not do is exactly what Stewart and Colbert do. You are hoist by your own petard.

        • Cosman246 says:

Don’t try quoting Hamlet. It doesn’t really fit, because Stewart and Colbert aren’t in-your-face bitter people . They channel the power of satire and humour, and use that to make people laugh nationwide.

        • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Yeah, but some people like Colbert and Stewart. Noone knows you. You haven’t said anything to make anyone laugh. All you have done was post insults. And you are still doing it. The two comedians may throw insults around, but its expected. Its why some people like the show. For you, its just not going to work. For you, I think meeting in the middle and finding common ground would be much more effective. Just a thought.

        • dreadd says:

you really have no clue what you’re talking about, do you?

    • bodo says:

I will when the politicians – and my corporate overlords bosses – do.

    • Naoyusimi says:

Yes, because dumbass comedians know more than experts who actually spend years studying things.

That would only apply to Stewart if he was a dumbass, which, if you’ve watched him very much, he clearly is not.

It’s obvious to anyone: He doesn’t just get handed a script and memorizes it. He is personally very well-versed in what’s happening in the world and has good, clear thoughts of his own to apply.

      INSULT FAIL.

    • slan agat says:

Point of order: Stewart punctures very few actual experts. The people he punctures are shills. Hired guns and spin doctors who use their credentials to push an agenda when the facts are not actually on their side. See, e.g., Betsy McCaughey.

If Stewart were doing straight news, he would have a non-partisan expert on to look at the facts on both sides of the argument – but that’s not funny. Making industry and political whores who present themselves as experts look like what they are, by contrast, is funny.

That’s why “expert” is in sarcasm-quotes in the lol. Figure this shit out, yo.

      • FaileV says:

but Slan, if i do that I can not justify my opinions that stewart is a idiot. Reading is so inconvenient.

      • Allie says:

Hrm? They have people on from all sides of the debate.
And everyone knows it’s not a serious show, just like Fox news.

        • Justacarolinian says:

As opposed to tingling legs and forged military records? The real source of Global Warming is all the lies both sides of the news spew.

            • Justacarolinian says:

Chris Mathew’s and his leg, Dan Blather and his forged records. I don’t watch any of them, but I don’t see Fox news as any more or less accurate than CNN, MSNBC, and such…..

              • Igor the Vigorous says:

True, but if you can prove to me that three times in the middle of a life/career ruining crisis for a member of their party, CNN and MSNBC have screwed up the (D) and (R) labeling and run the mistake through several episodes, then I’ll agree with you. The Sanford and Ensign mistakes still bother me too much.

                • Justacarolinian says:

See, I don’t keep up with all of them, but there have been tons of things by ALL of them. And a ton of “structured” reporting when it was Democrats. Look at the Monicagate thing. CNN should have had to brought a blue dress for testing.
My point is not to defend Fox, or put down the others, just that they all are slanting the news, and we need honesty, not slanting.

                  • Igor the Vigorous says:

                    Meh.
I’ll give you two pictures of what annoys me specially about FOX, then agree with you.
                    {http://www.politicususa.com/files/imagepicker/j/jmeasley/oreilly-foley-d-1.jpg}
                    {http://www.joeydevilla.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/mark_sanford_fox_news_thumb.jpg}
By the way- O’Reilly’s show ran that first mistake repeatedly.

                    • Justacarolinian says:

Since I am barely awake this morning, overlook me if I’m wrong. But I seem to remember one or several of the lefty news nets reporting William Jeffers D Louisiana as a R. And wasn’t there something about a big X on Dick Cheney or Karl Rove one time too?

                      • Igor the Vigorous says:

Not sure- I’ll go look for that.
Although, I wouldn’t put it past anyone in the media to make a propaganda image like that.

                        • Justacarolinian says:

It wasn’t a propaganda image, it was during a state of the Union speech, or something big, and it wasn’t just a flash. There were tons of right wingers cheesed for months.

  3. bodo says:

I’m amazed that The Daily Show has been nominated for journalism awards – not because it’s inaccurate per se, but because it is unashamedly and admittedly a comedy show, not a “real” news show. On those occasions I’ve seen the show I’ve found it very funny, and I’ve especially appreciated seeing him with conservative guests (he has always seemed to be very courteous to his guests, regardless of their political leanings). I was a little dismayed when I started looking through the other captions – a lot of stuff about his original surname, which seems stupid to me, since he’s never tried to hide his ethnicity (heck, he’s used it in his stand-up routines). Should we bring up John Wayne’s real name? Would (or should) it change your opinion of him? What about Jack Palance? Sheesh.

Wups, better get down off of this-here high horse before I fall and break something important…

    • lowly grunt says:

I know someone who refuses to acknowledge anything that comes from Jon Stewart because he changed his name. Sad, really.

      VNV speaks truth.

      • matt says:

I certianly hope those people take everything a radio DJ says with a grain of salt. I hope none of them think their REAL name is Blazor or that their entire surname is “bubba the love spounge”.
I enjoy Jon’s show. I can disconsern fact from comedy, and if the line blurs for me, I look it up. You can get legit news from this show, and even though it may swing liberal, I’d bet it’s 75% more authentic and factual than anything you get on O’really and Beck’s show.

  4. slaggingham says:

If I want strawman comedy, I’ll watch the Wizard of Oz.

    • H Lynnea says:

That comment should come with a spittake warning. I may not agree with your opinion, but that was still a lot funnier than the caption above.

    • Justacarolinian says:

Ok, you owe a bunch of people Shamwows, as they just spit their drinks all over their PCs.

  5. Just plain funny. says:

I know that many people don’t think that is funny, but if you worked with people that call themselves experts and were not, you might understand the humor in it. It happens to me almost daily and I feel the same way.

  6. Cosman246 says:

A reminder to newcomers to ‘The Daily Show’
First rule of The Daily Show: There is no ‘h’ in Jon Stewart
Second rule of The Daily Show: THERE IS NO ‘H’ in Jon Stewart

  7. Cosman246 says:

    The nesting guys hate me….
look how many times I have to decree “Nesting fail”

  8. Mogrutana says:

    Here’s how his show works.

    1) Music plays
    2) Welcome to blablabla!
    3) In other news (insert bad sarcasm filled joke here)
    4) He stares at the camera until people laugh. He will NOT move until he hears laughing.

    • bloop says:

oh yeah, and during it, he makes insightful comments about how our news media today is turning more and more into entertainment television, into soaps, rather than actual information sources that openly acknowledge their own biases and make us think about our own and make us want to look for more information, so that we can make informed decisions on our own.

      • Mogrutana says:

It’s not really insightful when anyone with a brain can see the corruption in media these days.

        • charro says:

Wow, way to read. There is a difference between “making insightful comments” and “being insightful enough to see”. He could be making asinine or irrelevant comments.. But they are insightful.

Jon Stewart is funny, and he does have great interviews. You’re just jealous. :-P

  9. ravinpink says:

    Jon Stewart for Pres!

  10. Headphone says:

    *Yakety Sax begins playing*

  11. Mickey Blue Eyes says:

If by “correct” you mean to spew Leftist/Socialist/Marxist propaganda, then that would make sense.

I really do like Jon Stewart, but he really screwed the pooch on his last show. I agree that the reading of the new healthcare bill does not promote euthanasia, only the use of advanced directives, but he didn’t know anything about what it means to have reimbursement for providers tied to quality indicators, nor what that will mean for family physicians. He kept thinking it meant something else entirely and it really made his argument look weak and ill-informed. I was so disappointed.
