Let me explain something to you about how legislation is written, because I’ve read it, interpreted it, and tried to write some myself.

There’s an exercise they do at West Point, maybe you’ve heard of it, where the candidate has to cut a set of written orders and write them airtight enough that there’s no way someone who’s actively, maliciously trying to screw them up can follow the order to the letter and act contrary to the intent. It’s a wicked hard exercise. And that’s just getting one person to do one specific task under one set of circumstances.

Now try to cut a written order to apply equally, fairly, to everyone under all possible circumstances. Now do it every day of your career.

Legal language is that difficult because it’s meant to do an extremely difficult thing. If it were significantly simpler, somebody – probably lots of people – would abuse it or get abused because of it. And by that I mean lots more people than already do/are.

That’s an outright lie, Froo. The only proposal that “scraps everything about the current system, good and bad” is HR676, and that’s dead on arrival and everybody knows it.

The proposals that are actually under serious consideration do NOT change the funamental fee-for-service model of US health care (which makes cost containment exceptionally difficult). It does NOT eliminate or fundamentally restructure private insurance.

What it WOULD do is ban arbitrary recission, end pre-existing condition exclusions, provide subsidies for more people who can’t afford insurance of any sort now, set baseline standards for the basic health care that insurance plans must cover, and establish a competitive non-profit insurer to keep the private insurers honest and prevent the collusion in premium inflation we’ve seen over the past ten years.

To say that the proposals actually passed by the House and through the Senate HELP Committee “scraps everything” is pure blatant propaganda and scare tactics. I expected more honesty from you.
