I’m doing a science project and need to use a laser pointer. The project is about making a toy for children aged 9 to 12. Since light from a laser pointer is harmful to the eyes, I want to put maybe a material to filter some harmful stuff or something from the laser light. My mom is talking about selling my 17 week old boxer pup because she is not housebroke yet how do I keep her from selling her? Please dont say “house train her” because I know that would help but it takes time.

As a matter of fact… a very good friend of mine was diagnosed with testicular cancer several years ago, with absolutely no insurance and pretty much broke. They removed the offending ‘nad, set him up with chemo and cured him. And then billed him for over half a mil’. Which he has ever so slowly paid down, by sending them 10, 20, 50 bucks a month, depending on what he could afford. Yes, a lot of it they wrote off. But those write offs are also a tax write off (to a point) and don’t necessarily get passed onto other patients. I understand this is just one case and may be anecdotal, but it is possible to get treatment for life threatening illnesses.

I’d just like to add that health insurance is *NOT* affordable to everyone. There is this magical little line called “pre-existing conditions”. If you fall outside of said line, you can get insurance. The problem comes in when you have a “pre-existing condition”. Now, if you are content to draw Dissability forever, the chances are quite good that your income will never be high enough to disqualify you for Medicare/Medicaid. However, if you have a history of poor health and *gasp* you make too much money for state assistance, well, then you are just plain out of luck.

The only Health Insurance I can get (despite being able to easily afford full coverage at the normal rates) is a “high risk” policy through my state. You want to know how affordable it is? Sure, I’ll tell you. The monthly premiums start at $600 per month, with a $10,000 a year deductable, after which the policy pays 50%. Wow. So yeah, everyone who says that “every American can buy insurance by going without internet” can give me their policy and take the ONLY option I am given for healthcare themselves. That’s what I call fair play.

Health Care Reform is not about the very poor, it’s about the middle class. It’s not about public health care (though there is a public option to keep insurance companies honest), it’s about making new rules so insurance companies can’t take Americans’ lunch money and shove us down the staircase. Is it so wrong for me to want the ability to choose my own health insurance company or *gasp* not want to live on a handout? Gee, I know, us sick people should just keel over and stop breathing everyone else’s air, right? Forgive me if I lack simpathy for those who support the insurance companies extortion of the American people, especially the middle class.

There are studies and articles out, if you choose to do a little research, that show that those people without insurance do NOT get the same care that the insured get. In addition to not getting equal care, they risk losing their homes and income (hospitals can have your wages garnished if you cannot afford to pay them). Tell me is that something the insured commonly have to worry about when they go to the emergency room?

You can equivocate all you want to about life expectancy: there are other factors involved, including crime, cars, genetics, etc. The simple fact is that other countries have other factors involved, too. It’s a part of the picture viewed from far away, but it’s still one part of the picture that must be viewed. The fact that it’s like viewing the U.S. from a telescope on the moon doesn’t change the fact that the other countries, large and small and poor and rich, are ALL VIEWED with the SAME SCOPE.

You haven’t “cited” anything that I can see.

I don’t know who brought up life expectancy, but oftentimes the 2 statistics used to evaluate a country’s overall healthcare and culture are: 1) infant mortality; and, 2) maternal mortality.

These have been used for many years …. I first encountered them in a college sociology class more than 20 years ago. They are very good measures of how a culture takes care of its most vulnerable.

Access to healthcare by ALL, including the most vulnerable–young, powerless, poor–is a measure of how well that country’s system is working. Period. There is no equivocation. You can’t wiggle out of that one. It is fact.

No you haven’t. Citing something means producing a quote from an authoratitive source, or a weblink to it.
I don’t need to cite a specific source because pretty much any responsible medical practicioner will act as a source for a claim that post-stabilisation treatment improves trauma outcomes.

That’s not the debate here. The debate is over life expectancy. If we have twice the amount of car accidents, there’s still going to be more deaths. Which, in turn, will bring down our life expectancy. But, that doesn’t have anything at all to do with health care. And, that’s just one of the factors.

Oh and I think you’ll find that better post-stabilisation treatment (like actually getting some) improves outcomes for trauma from auto shunts and attempted homicides, just like it does for everything else.

As I stated in a later poste, the funny thing about the statement that other countries have a higher life expectancy is that the lie is in the numbers. The facts are that the US drives more than any other country. So, it’s just natural that we have more automobile fatalities. Furthermore, we have a higher homicide rate. If you take out these fatalities and focus on the things that health care can actually affect, you will see that the US is number one in life expectancy.

FYI one was a link to a cartoon about the very basics of how a free society is organized set to catchy music; the other was merely a list of objective reasons to be *proud* of this country. There was nothing any reasonable, sensible, intelligent person could object to (argue with, arguably, but object to? Please). I’m sorry but if he has to be ashamed of that, there’s something deeply wrong, and he has confirmed that by his subsequent comments anyway. Seriously something wrong there.
